I get the whole "We're going to pay this guy way over his market value, and even though he won't produce to that level, we're hoping he can energize our fan base and show them that we mean business, and hopefully his presence will make it easier for us to lure other free agents as well" mindset, if the guy you're overpaying is a charismatic popular player. But not for Jayson Werth. No one is going to go to the ballpark just to see him play, he's not going to sell a ton of jerseys, and he's not going to get National endorsements that will increase the value of your teams brand. He is what he is, a non descript fringe all star player who looks like Edge from WWE. Just a bad business move on top of a bad baseball move.and he should go back to this look, imo[Edited on December 7, 2010 at 3:15 PM. Reason : x]

hahahahah the nats are apparently in the zack greinke sweepstakes now, and other teams are upping their offers. i fucking love the nats now. imagine if they got greinke and signed cliff lee and carl pavano (probably declining but who cares because of this year)2012 pitching staff:leestrasburggreinkepavanozimmerman white sox moving on from paul konerkoo's became interested and then disinterested in kenshin kawakami and almost traded nolan reimold and alfredo simon to the rays for jason bartlett. thanks for not doing that, andy macphaildodgers picked up tony gwynn jr for 1 yearrangers listening to offers for michael younghaha and it's only tuesday. this offseason owns.

the nats just showed that they won't suck from here on out because they're cheap.they'll only suck because they're dumb.and i say this as a fan.

Carlos Pena to the cubs for a 1 year $10 million deal. Seems like a lot, but whatever. I'm not a cubs fan, so I don't care. He put up a similar line to Mark Reynolds last year.196/.325/.407Definitely a down year, but he also had plantar fasciitis, so I'm sure that was a factor in his hitting. Apparently that condition never actually heals though, so who knows if he'll rebound to 2007-2009 levels

As a Phillies fans commenting in regards to the Washinginton/Werth signing, the Natinols got proper fucked. Adam Dunn had compatible offensive numbers and you let him go for about half Werth's contract. He racked up big numbers in Philly because of the short porch in left field and the lineup batting in front of him. He'll struggle in DC where the fence in 22 feet shorter in the gap and no one protecting him in the lineup. He in no way deserves that contract. Can't blame the guy for cashing in on it though.
12/8/2010 11:14:51 AM
Haha my biggest thing about it isn't that werth doesn't deserve the money. That much is obvious. What the nats have done now is put themselves in a bad spot in 2012 or 2013 when Ryan Zimmerman, who is still their best player, becomes a FA. They're gonna have to pay him more than werth if they wanna keep him. Then comes Strasburg and Harper (whenever he breaks through), plus whatever contracts they take on from other FAs. I don't understand the outrage and frustration from people who aren't nats fans. If they haven't put themselves in a better position to win, then they may have really, really fucked themselves, so who gives a shit? I don't even think this werth deal will make it harder to obtain guys like Carl Crawford. The other 29 GMs know this was a retarded deal, so i don't think they'd feel any more compelled to pony up and pay people more than they would have otherwise. The real travesty is that fucking padres/red sox deal. Holy shit.
12/8/2010 11:30:16 AM
Royals announcing deal with Jeff francoeur later. Looks like Charlie Manuel will have to find a new project to "fix." Hey, i know. How bout that GIGANTIC FUCKING HOLE IN RYAN HOWARD'S SWING? Oh yeah, it's impossible and a complete farce to think he does anything to anyone.
12/8/2010 12:40:03 PM
Hahaha holy shit the mariners have an agreement with Jack cust for 1 year $2.5 million. That's $500k more than what the royals will pay Jeff francoeur. Dayton Moore needs to be fired for that as if he didn't need to be fired already
12/8/2010 2:24:46 PM
Cust is perfect for that park. He could hit .230 with 30 bombs and 100 walks and be their most productive hitter besides Ichiro.
12/8/2010 2:29:00 PM
I can't figure out why Billy beane non-tendered him, resigned him, DFAed him, then cut him loose. Dude OPSed .395 last year. Beane should've had a boner for him. Great pickup by the M'sO's talking to the twins about jj Hardy for 2 minor league pitchers or something. Not sure how much time is left on his contract, but he might be worth it for his defense[Edited on December 8, 2010 at 2:46 PM. Reason : .]

To me, there are only 2 players in the major leagues worth $18mil+.Roy Halladay and Albert Pujols

Yankees have upped their offer to Lee to 7 years.

12/9/2010 9:58:25 AM
as a Twins fan I hope we win the Central and play Boston...it will be a nice change to get raped by them instead of our normal September raping to the Yankees
12/9/2010 11:21:53 AM
Judging by the contracts being handed out to mediocre offensive players this offseason, Albert Pujols will be commanding $30mil+/yr for 10 years next offseason.
12/10/2010 9:15:49 AM
^ they should just go ahead and give him a 1/4 to 2/5 ownership of the team with a lifetime contract.
12/10/2010 9:22:38 AM
12/10/2010 12:06:59 PM
what'd Crawford get? $22/year? if he's worth that, then Pujols is definitely worth ~30. The only players I've ever seen better than Pujols are maybe mid-90's Bonds and Griffey and late 90's A-Rod, since they play harder positions and had better speed. The pure hitting, not striking out, drawing walks, great defense (although 1st isn't really hard), and smart baserunning is absolutely amazing.
12/10/2010 1:03:58 PM
^ of course he isn't worth it (he MIGHT be in the first year or two including his glove), and neither is werth (hate using his last name in the same breath as "worth"), but they're far from mediocre offensive players. since 07 crawford has been worth an average of 4.5 wins above replacement each year, and werth has averaged 4.5 as well. their peripheral stats are above average for the most part in that time frame too.
12/10/2010 1:29:49 PM
well that bonds doesn't count.. plus he was terrible defensively and couldn't run worth a shit. but yeah, his OBP, avg, and power made up for it
12/10/2010 1:44:23 PM
^ how does he not count? And LF is harder to play defensively than 1B, so how does defense even play into it? And bonds was actually an above average defender up through 2005[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 1:54 PM. Reason : .]

12/10/2010 1:54:01 PM
Bonds in his prime was the best player anyone our age has ever seen. He was the best defensive outfielder in baseball, he stole 30-40 bases and OPS+'d near or over 200.Pujols is great but he is no Bonds.[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 1:59 PM. Reason : Look up his 92 and 93 numbers -- jesus]
12/10/2010 1:57:55 PM
Oh fucking spare me. Yeah he took roids, lied about it, was a big asshole, whatever. The fact is, the effect of roids on stats is largely overstated. And whatever effect they had on bonds, the motherfucker terrorized the strike zone like no one since Ted Williams, or even babe Ruth. There was no way to get him out. Steroids aren't responsible for that, and even without them he still would've had complete control over the plate. He fucking OPSed 1.422 in 2004. That is unfuckingbelievable. 120 IBBs. 120! Teams were so afraid of Barry bonds that they preferred putting him on base and giving the giants a run scoring opportunity or increasing their chances of scoring if an opportunity already existed than letting him hit. This happened 120 different times. Find me a player who posed that much of a threat in one season. I don't think you can.[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 2:20 PM. Reason : .]

Signing Carlos Pena is such a Cub move. At least its only for one year.
12/10/2010 2:30:27 PM
50 years from now, people will look back on Barry Bonds stats the same way we now look back at Wilt Chamberlain's. Like averaging 50 points and 25 rebounds over a season.
12/10/2010 2:34:20 PM
I'm not sure if we're arguing anything, so i'll move on..I didn't wanna start the 'Official Royals 2011' thread yet, but in more moves to become the Kansas City Ex-Braves, they just signed Melky Cabrera to a 1 year, $1.25M deal to go along with Francoeur
12/10/2010 2:35:44 PM
^^ And they'll call the hall of fame voters a bunch of big dumb idiots for not voting him in the year he's eligible. But hopefully they won't be that stupid.^ you were the one who said early 2000s bonds didn't count. them's fightin words.[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 2:40 PM. Reason : .]

You don't put the best defensive outfielder in the game in left fieldDeferring to Andy Van Slyke is one thing, but there's no way he should have been in left next to Darren Lewis or Marvin Bernard
12/10/2010 3:50:32 PM
Marvin Bernard always makes me think of Back to the Future
