I sent an email to the dude as well, here was the reply

Quote :
"Bobby --

I spoke with the committee chair. He said the 51 ballots showed that this year's candidates are extremely close. Many selectors reported having a difficult time picking their top candidates, especially when several top linebackers had such different styles of play. They spent a great deal of extra time reviewing game films to make their decision. Several on the committee specifically noted Carter's less-traditional finesse-oriented style that is similar to 2004 winner Derrick Johnson, and felt his overall athletic performance and coverage ability merited recognition. They also noted the talent and achievements of Nate Irving, his tremendous comeback and his recent record-setting performance. Both are apt to find themselves in the NFL in different defensive schemes.

The selectors are afforded a write-in opportunity, so if they feel someone was missed in selecting the top five, they can write in a nominee in the final balloting.

Hope this helps. "

Finesse style of play =

lower stats

team HAS to beat Duke in order to become bowl eligible

sounds like a great way to play as a linebacker...

So apparently we're handing out college football awards based on NFL potential now. The end is near.

Technically they can be "bowl eligible" with a 5-7 record, if there aren't enough teams with .500/+ records.

wait. isn't this for the best linebacker? how in the fuck can this not be based on stats? who cares what the player looks like? that's much less important than what he actually accomplishes.

I'd love to see Nate get this, but with this finalist list, this award has lost credibility. this award is easily a toss up between nate and luke.

lets be honest. there's no way he wins the award, but for him to be snubbed in favor of a few of the guys in front of him is a complete fucking joke

I emailed Ron Arp as well and he deferred immediately to the write in route. Does anybody know if we would be writing in Nate for the final award or is this just to determine the finalists?

Lol at Arp answering emails to wolfpack faithful on his bberry at 10:45 on a Friday night.

^^^^As Treetwista mentioned earlier, Arp mentioned not hearing any uproar except for Nate being left off. I wonder if this is the most he has received feedback from a player being left off...

And leave it to a football player from UNC as being described as playing with finesse...

I can since Nate is not a athlete for the University of North Carolina of Walmart. Bruce is a lot more popular with your local trailer park UNC crowd and your wine & cheese political/lawyer crowd who probably threatened a lawsuit for not including a UNC player. As an extra bonus the journalism grads of UNC did a remarkable job, marketing Bruce to show how much of a super line backer he is. DUH!

Perhaps coming up we can do an American Idol type poll such that viewers can hope vote on their favorite linebacker to be deemed #1. What happens on the field does not matter don't you know! It is all on who shows up more on ESPN highlights!

Derrick Johnson had 130 tackles his senior season, and 19 tackles for loss

Compared to Bruce Carter's 57 tackles with 3 for loss (prior to the Duke game)

They're basically identical twins out there on the field

If I ever get the chance to meet Dick Butkus, I'm going to ask him what he envisions the award thats named after him representing. I assume one of the first words he will mention will be 'finesse'

Nate wins the College Football Performance Award.

http://www.gopack.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/120810aaa.html

From the article:

Quote :
"The CFPA awards recipients exclusively using objective scientific rankings based upon meta-algorithms derived from differential equations, statistics, and probability.

Based on an extensive review of data, the CFPA determined that Irving was responsible for more overall success in 2010 than any other linebacker in Division I FBS football.

"

Some linebackers are known as 'finesse' linebackers. Nate just gets shit done.

^^ It is fitting that Irving would win that over the Butkus seeing that some engineer probably designed that formula as opposed to the mickey mouse shit that the Butkus committee uses.

at the time those selections were announced, Kuechly (a former recruit prospect for us, so was the dude at MD now) had more tackles than three people on the list combined, one of who won the award.
