^ ha same here. It just comes down to not wanting to put forth a lot of effort in maintaining an image. at least for me.

I'd argue that "hipsters" have been around since basically the advent of punk in the early 70's. The idea has taken different shapes and been morphed into/associated with different offshoot musical genres and other art related mediums since then, with some groups being more annoying, showy, and fake than others but it just amazes me that people think this is something that has popped up recently. If these bands emerged today, they'd basically be considered "hipsters" no doubt.Early 80s:1985:[Edited on November 9, 2010 at 1:06 PM. Henry Rollins dislikes hipsters
11/9/2010 1:06:24 PM
Exactly my point. What I mean is that most people on here would call him and Black Flag "hipsters" today.[Edited on November 9, 2010 at 1:10 PM. Reason : punctuation!]

Basically it's a bunch of people who don't know shit about shit talking about people who don't know shit about shit and everyone needs to just shut up alreadyReally tired of hearing and reading the word hipster

A lot of hipsters like Johnny Cash
11/9/2010 1:35:44 PM
I, for one, welcome our new Hipster overlords. They really don't bother me, probably because I'm a fine arts student. Yea, I bet that has something to do with it.Also, as long as they have hot hipster chicks they can stay as long as they like.
11/9/2010 1:41:04 PM
^^ That is the natural state of humanity friend. That's like saying, "a lot of hipsters like to breathe." Only fucking deginerates don't like Johnny Cash.[Edited on November 9, 2010 at 1:43 PM. Reason : .]

^^^^ I agree with you about the punk vs. your definition of hipster. I share the same definition of hipster with you. I guess the point I was trying to make wasn't made very well. (My fault, not yours or anyone else)I put "hipster" in quotes up there because I was talking about what a lot of people on here perceive the word "hipster" to apply to. These arguments turn into people really talking/arguing about many different types of people; the word just gets used way too often and applied to too many people. For example, guys who wear button up shirts and enjoy music that happens to not be "mainstream" vs the people I consider hipsters who live by your definition (but may also share some similar dress and music tastes).I've dressed relatively the same way for 10 years now yet I've gotten called a "hipster" with negative connotations more than once in recent years when I've been out. I'm far from my definition of a hipster but I get lumped in there all the time.[Edited on November 9, 2010 at 1:43 PM. Reason : .]

Man in Black is like the basic emo-hipster mantra.
11/9/2010 1:49:49 PM
^^ fair enough. People who base their identity around an "image" deserve to be categorized . . . but that doesn't mean everyone who vaguely fits that image can be categorized.
11/9/2010 1:51:57 PM
hipsters are early adopters and are all about cultural fluencythat is why they are not like the avant gardethe avant garde was about creating something new and swimming against the stream - not fully understanding and manipulating itMusical analogy:compare free jazz with a booty mash-up[Edited on November 9, 2010 at 1:52 PM. No one is avant garde

^^I don't get why people think that hipsters obsess over how supposedly culture-less and awful it is to be white and middle class. Makes me think they're just assuming it's a new name for high school emo kids after they graduate (this would be the butchering of the word "emo" that Skack mentions).Hell, a lot of them are just in it to get laid. They're smug dicks who are trying to enjoy life... They're just different-looking dicks.[Edited on November 9, 2010 at 2:35 PM. Reason : .]

As far as your advertising argument goes, the same things can be said about black people, young children, moms, single men, etc...

jeans are very cheap commodity clothing that became popular because of its cheapness. Just like PBR. My point was that high priced jeans are as retarded as high priced pbr. There is litterally no difference between your basic levis and expensive designer jeans. You would be an idiot to pay more for something that is of the same quality, but thats what hipsters do. And thats why people hate them. I dont think obscure is probably the best word. They tend to favor products and music generally consumed by the poor because they are anti-fashion/anti-pop. Things like jeans, pbr, folk music, etc... They are willing to pay the same price as the mainstream stuff for these things, which is retarded. And thats fine that there are retards who will overpay for things. But dont get butt hurt if you massively overpay for something and someone calls you an idiot. You're an idiot and thats fine. When someone is that into image over substance, it tends to create more demand for image over substance. aka selling out. Granted its hard to kill certain genres with bad overproduced garbage. The only one I can really think of is punk and that deserved to die either way.Basically what people dont like about hipsters is how they go on and on and on about how they over paid for some boring shit or how they like some band thats either not very good or thats 10 years old and they just found out about and have to spread the word because they're the first to ever find out about them. You aren't original, you aren't interesting, shut up about your dumb boring life and the dumb boring things you like.
11/9/2010 3:52:34 PM
How many hipsters does it take to change a light bulb?Eh, it's a really vague number. You've probably never heard of it...
