With my job I'm on an HDHP, $3000 deductible but 100/0 afterward. The difference in monthly cost between that and the PPO plan goes into the HSA. After less than a year I'm getting close to the full deductible amount in the HSA, and if all goes well I can lower my HSA contribution next year. If you're willing to take the chance having to pay the deductible amount before the HSA fills out, I don't see a downside...

(To add me to my wife's plan would be far more expensive than me taking even the most costly plan from my employer.)

I would spend some time reading up on HSAs. If you can afford it, you should be maxing it out ($3,400 for single this year) your HSA every year as premiums and contributions are usually payroll exempt (7.65% unless you're over $128k and then it starts to phase out) in addition to fed/state exempt as most PPO plans are. I have my HSA invested and pay out of pocket for health care (holding onto receipts) and I am in an almost identical situation as you $3,250 deduc then 100/0. I have been to my PCP twice in 4 years for typical illnesses and paid OOP. It also works well if you use healthcare frequently with a $3,250 max OOP. When I'm 65 I can withdraw like a TIRA or if needed on qualified medical expenses anytime.

For me personally, my premium savings on HDHP vs. PPO I'm offered is annually somewhere in the $700-$900 range (single filer). I look at that as effectively the first contribution to my HSA account coutning toward my $3,250 deduc (which again is deposited fed/state/FICA tax free).
