We shouldn't ever have signed Castillo to a multi-year contract in the first place...IIRC, we got him at the trade deadline a few years back and then that off season signed him to a 3 year deal. What a move...

What do you think the odds are that the Mets are able to ship Beltran off before the trade deadline and how far back to the Mets have to be to do so? In his last contract year Beltran went on a ridiculous tear when he got traded from KCR to Houston and I think he went absolutely bananas in the postseason.

He's making $20 mil. He'll have to remain healthy and marginally productive and the Mets are going to eat damn near every dollar if they want to ship him out.

[Edited on March 18, 2011 at 12:54 PM. Reason : He made $76k per plate appearance last year ]

Yeah. I guess the Mets can maybe "buy" a bunch of good prospects by offering cash+Beltran to a team. I can see them dealing with the Twins to bump Cuddyer. Beltran is done playing Center, right?

I hope Murphy figures out this second base thing...would love to have both him and davis on the field every game.

if beltran and bay can get back to what they should be, this just might be a decent season

^^ I don't know if he's physically done there, but for the Mets he is. A lot of that has to do with the value Pagan brings as a CF to the team both offensively and defensively though. While Beltran was out, Pagan was close to elite level at his position. Only a handful of CF's had better seasons.

agreed. i felt like there was no point where it should have even been considered for him to play CF but i know they wanted to respect beltran and his wishes

I think being a Mets fan and Wolfpack fan fit so nicely.

Always on the verge of doing something but never do except a long time ago.

Mets cut Perez, eat $12m

Best part

Quote :
"When the Mets cut bait with Bonilla after the 1999 season, they were on the hook for $5.9 million. Instead, the Mets agreed to pay Bonilla $29.8 million between 2011 and 2035. Those annual $1,193,248.20 payments begin this July 1."

The best part is that he only played one season with the Mets under that contract. 141 plate appearances.

WSJ article from last year

Quote :
"Mets rightfielder Jeff Francoeur, the team's representative to the players association, chatted with Mr. Bonilla in the Mets' clubhouse. Mr. Francoeur said he was unaware of the conditions of Mr. Bonilla's buyout and had never heard of such a contract.

"But it's awesome," he said. "You pull something off like that, and later on you don't have to worry about [stuff].""

He sounds like a damned buffoon.

But the Mets are infinitely more retarded for having agreed to something like that...

So what exactly did the Mets do with the $6m they saved by deferring Bonilla's buyout? Mike Hampton?

Was this guy running the team in '99?

You also have to factor in that based on his lifestyle up to that point, there was probably a less than 50 percent chance that Bonilla would be alive to start collecting 12 years down the road.

LOL at the Bonilla buyout even if over time it is not that much more. It is just funny to think that they'll be paying him until he's probably in his 70s or 80s.

Sounds like Brad Emaus will be the starter at 2B, and if his OBP is as good in the majors as it was in the minors I'm guessing he'll bat second in the order.

Hell of a start. Josh Johnson owns the Mets.

From Adam Rubin on Twitter:
Quote :
"
My stat was correct. In fact, Mark Simon adds: Dating to '09, #Mets have allowed 17 grand slams since last one they hit (8/1/09, Pagan)."

Chris Young pitched good tonight. 5.1 innings, 1 run, 7 Ks. He also went 3-3 at the plate with 1 RBI and 1 Run. D Wright was 4-5 tonight with 2 RBI. Mets beat Phils 7-1. 3-1 on the season (all on the road). Can't complain about that start.

I'm going be able to make it to a game this year, third year in a row. Pretty excited. Either vs the Phillies (May 27th-29th) or the Pirates (May 30th-June 2nd).

^Go to the Pirates games...maybe you'll actually see a Mets victory lol.

The bullpen has been bad lately...last 11 innings (in last 3 games) bullpen has given up 10 hits, 9 earned runs and 11 walks. Awesome.

And Jason Isringhausen and Igrashi were promoted and Lucas Duda and Blaine Boyer were DFA.

I'm convinced Tulo is the best player of this generation. He'd have 95 HRs if he played all his games against the Mets.

Of course the one pitcher to start the season off well ends up being the first DL victim of the season (not counting players on the DL before the season even started, ie Santana & Bay)
