Haha I agree with you, wdprice3. Next they'll start putting tip jars out at Bojangles
5/11/2012 9:18:09 AM
Threads like these are why I'm glad I only know 1.5 TWWers in real life. I'd be embarrassed to go out in public with most of you. EARN YOUR TIP! BUTTER MY BREAD! CUT MY STEAK! WIPE THE SPITTLE OFF MY CHIN! Its like dining at a convalescent home with some of you people.
5/11/2012 9:19:00 AM
Wait, you don't tip at Bojangles? I always tip at Bojangles.^I also expect servers to wipe my ass after I take a shit in their establishment.[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 9:20 AM. Reason : ^]

Its about being a savvy diner and realizing the work that goes into preparing your meals, and that your plate of chicken fried steak covered in gravy doesn't magically appear in front of you. This is a lost concept with so much of the population.
5/11/2012 9:21:48 AM
And if I'm eating that chicken fried steak in the restaurant I'll tip 20% if the waitress isn't an insufferable cunt. If the restaurant owner isn't paying his cooks enough, his cooks will go work somewhere else.
5/11/2012 9:24:24 AM
^
5/11/2012 9:24:50 AM
I think we understand that, it's why that plate of chicken fried shit costs $8.99. The food doesn't cost that much, you're paying the people who prepare it. Outside of waiters who can be paid less than minimum wage I'm not tipping restaurant staff, especially when I put my order in online and then come to pick it up.Yeah, fuck the Moe's tip jar.
5/11/2012 9:26:32 AM
5/11/2012 9:28:05 AM
Fast food places (like Moe's) have somehow managed to work the cost of food preparation into the price of their food. Of course it took NASA a few decades to work out the calculations.Serious, if you guilt into tipping people had your way there'd be a tip jar at the self checkout line in Wal-Mart.
5/11/2012 9:28:20 AM
Haha
5/11/2012 9:30:58 AM
So, once again, as usual, I'm the asshole
5/11/2012 9:31:35 AM
Yeh, if you think tipping at non-servicing food establishments is "required".
5/11/2012 9:32:19 AM
Usually the guy at Moe's who rings me up, puts my chips in a basket. He deserves a dollar for that. Wdprice is probably pissed because he didn't get extra chips to go with his double meat homewrecker.Also...how do you know .5 of a tdubber? Or if you're huge like wdp...does that count as 1.5??[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 9:47 AM. Reason : .]

^no. he's not a server. he's already paid a fair wage for that job. [Edited on May 11, 2012 at 9:46 AM. Reason : .]
5/11/2012 9:44:32 AM
I think its more about means, jbrick. Eating at Moe's is a big deal for folks like wdprice, so they meticulously budget for weeks leading up to the big day. When that total rings up, thats it. Their pockets yield nothing more.
5/11/2012 9:48:14 AM
^^ I was being sarcastic about him deserving a dollar for putting chips in a basket. But its just a fucking dollar. I feel for the dude because he has to work at Moes...so I want to give him a tip.^ true[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 9:48 AM. Reason : .]

lol, personal attacks is all you two have.
5/11/2012 9:49:08 AM
I usually tip a buck or two at Moe's. I go to the same one and they're nice and I often get a bit more than normal so sure. That's my choice. For those railing against an expectation to tip at places like that, all of your angst is for nothing because there is no such expectation. So it's a strawman argument. Hope you enjoyed yourselves.]

If they have a tip jar or provide a tip line on a receipt, then they're at least sending the message that they expect tips. [Edited on May 11, 2012 at 9:56 AM. Reason : .]

5/11/2012 9:57:39 AM
Uh, who said the cashier does that? It's obviously a management decision. And it doesn't mean that they think tipping is required; I said it send the message that tipping is expected. Two different things.
5/11/2012 9:59:37 AM
5/11/2012 9:59:44 AM
I've been to plenty of places that don't have a tip line on the receipt. In fact, I'm looking at 4 receipts from my last business trip; two of them have no tip line.[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 10:01 AM. Reason : .]

I don't think your brain registers tip line receipts. And again...it's the POS system. They could choose a different one, but that could mean thousands of dollars. Instead, they choose to piss off the fat ginger kid who doesn't like to tip.[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 10:02 AM. Reason : .]

This guy is mad at the world. There is no reasoning with him.
5/11/2012 10:04:49 AM
You do know that system allows them to customize what lines show up on the receipt, including the tip line? That's that whole point of those systems as opposed to an old school register. La Farm is an example of a place that uses that system but does not have a tip line.
5/11/2012 10:06:09 AM
If the cashier is expecting a tip, then I think it's wrong. I can't be pissed at them because I don't know if they're expecting it or not. I think it's a poor management decision to send the message that tips are expected, even if the employees don't expect tips, sending the message is a different story. I'm not really angry, that was just a poor attempt at some humor thrown in with my opinion; however, you uppity fucks can't see past the idea that cashiers and line workers don't really need tips. And I have no problem tipping. When it's proper to do so and the tip has been rightfully earned. Part of the reason that tipping is "required" for servers is that they get paid a very low wage because tipping is "required" (great circular reasoning by the restaurant industry). I don't see how that translates to cashiers and food preppers who get paid a fair wage.[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 10:09 AM. Reason : .]

^nah, Romney is a fucking idiot. I didn't vote for him in the primary and I really don't want to vote for him in the general election. And the job market determines what wage is deserved, not individuals. And tip all you want, I have no problem with that. I have a problem with the expectation, or sending the message of an expectation, for workers who aren't doing much to really earn a tip and who already earn a full wage, unlike real servers.[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 10:12 AM. Why stop there? Tip the farmer for growing the corn, tip the guy that delivered the corn to the auction, tip the people that auctioned the corn, tip the guy that delivered the corn to the food processing plant, tip the food processing plant people for dumping the corn into the machine, tip the people that put the bag of nachos on the truck, tip the truck driver that drove the bag of nachos to a distribution hub, tip the guy that drove the truck from the distribution hub to the back of Moe's, and finally tip the guy that shook out a few nachos onto a plastic tray.Nachos: $300... plus a 10% tip. </tongueincheek>\/If enough people tip in those kinds of situations it becomes the expectation. Coming soon to a Moe's near you: Workers paid below minimum wage because you are expected to leave a tip... burritos still the same price. [Edited on May 11, 2012 at 10:18 AM. Reason : -]
5/11/2012 10:13:17 AM
Maybe some managers intend it as an option; however, I do believe that much of the public perceives it as an expectation. Even more so when the worker says something about it or provides the look when no tip is left.^haha, so true. But the guy loading the potatoes on the truck did such a good job and even though he's earning a full wage, I should tip him. Let's see you all travel out to the farm to tip the guy.^yep. tipping servers is now "required", partially because the industry lowered their wages. why don't we just lower everyone's wages and expect tips? I'd love that![Edited on May 11, 2012 at 10:20 AM. Reason : .]

Well the last Chinese take-out place I went into, I didn't leave a tip, the smiling cashier took the receipt after I signed it, looked at it for a second, then looked at me with a semi-scowl. Maybe they just remembered it was grandma's birthday tomorrow and they forget to get her a card.Patrons aren't inquiring, or likely even thinking about, the cashier's wage. And I think you're wrong about much of the public not perceiving this as an expectation. yeah well that's just like your opinion man.[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 10:23 AM. Reason : .]

^^You might have me there. I don't do chinese take out...pretty much ever. But honestly I'd think it as the type of place most likely to give the look/say something. I don't always tip at places like that, and I've never got any looks/questions (but like I said, I haven't done chinese take out in forever)]
5/11/2012 10:25:00 AM
If the message being sent weren't perceived as an expectation, then we wouldn't have people bitching about it, mentioning it, or asking about it. But yet we do. People see a tip jar or tip line and think it's an expectation.^not that anecdotes == absolute truth, but personal experiences is all we have to go on... unless someone did some peer reviewed research on this [Edited on May 11, 2012 at 10:26 AM. I'm talking about patrons in general, so I don't know why you're attacking me. Yes, I can generally determine who is working on a server's wage and who is not. However, the stupid general public cannot or does not, for some reason. We can call the general public stupid and call them out for not putting some thought into it; however, that doesn't change things. People see it as an expectation.[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 10:35 AM.
