They deserve to own thier successes, and you need to own thier failures."

You're absolutely right. I do suck as a manager. I hate people and I hate taking responsibility for OTHER people's actions.

But you have to remember a business consists of all around knowledge. You have to be great in math, science, English, business, communication and advertisement, accounting, socializing, EVERYTHING.

It's not okay to suck at any of those aspects, but it's human nature. I've never had training as a manager in my life, i'm learning as I go, and learning to be a manager takes time and experience. I will one day be a great manager whether I like to do it or not.

I'm still curious to know how you trained this employee and allowed him to work without first having seen his social security card and driver's license.

Pretty easy. He shows up to the shop and he watches me while I work and talk. Got a problem with that?

I don't, but the government does and if one of these guys reports you to the department of labor then you'll have a lot of headaches.

Dude I can see why you fired him, and it's probably the right decision and all, but there's no way you can expect someone to work as hard and fast as they can all day for minimum wage.

I know you said you've done it for less than minimum wage, but you have incentive, since It's your business. Plus it's probably what you love to do.

If you sincerely believe this then I feel sorry for you, your business, and your staff.

There are a lot of people that die from old age, having been managers for a large portion of thier life, that don't have a single trait that a great manager has.

By thinking that just being a manager for some magic number, like 10,000 hours, will make you an expert at it, you are already sabotaging yourself.

I'm pretty sure some people have skated longer and harder than tony hawk but are not as good. Some people have a natural talent, some people don't. It doesn't mean that I can't learn to be a good manager even though I'm not the best.

You're correct, and maybe a great place to start would be the next person you have performance issues with.

Do you think you could have done anything differently?

So you found the great catch-22. You are catching on.

I need help, but the help I need is too expensive even at minimum wage. What can a business owner do?

The only rational thought is to hire people until they realize it's not worth it and leave. This is the inevitable cycle restaurant owners must confront since there is so much competition and food is so low in price.

Mark Cuban is incredibly successful. That doesn't mean he has the respect of all of his peers, even the ones he's more successful than.

Perhaps you should consider moving into a higher price bracket, where the quality of food, employees, and patrons is improved.

figure out how to manage instead of own

manage incoming workers expectations
manage their work (are there clear instructions, expectations)
treat them with respect

to be honest, you come across as an owner not a manager. You haven't realized that you and your coworkers are a team and when you are in the business you are the leader of the team not the owner of the business. You listed a whole lot of skills in a posting above and true running a small business takes a lot of skills; but managing people is the most important and outweighs the impact that being good at something like accounting does for your restaurant.

Quantitatively, nobody can have absolute respect among all people. It's common sense.
If we are talking along the lines of majority opinion; however, I think more people have respect for Mark Cuban than not.

quality of food is the best part of my business. the beer selection, too. and the late night hours.
I started with just rags and you know...beggers can't be choosers. I would love to have the location of my choice, with the layout of my choice, with the equipment of my choice, and employees of my choice. I will get there, it's just a matter of time and patience

Managing, aka babysitting, is a full time job. I already have 4 or 5 full time jobs that I'm doing simultaneously. Managing, however, requires my body being present in a location all the time.
I mean, one day I'll have that extra time, but i'd need to hire a manager/babysitter one day in the future, which I can't do right now because I can hardly afford an employee :-P

I got a second job that pays me minimum wage a few weeks ago. It is the first time I have EVER worked for so little. My main job pays me more than double what I make there. It sucks, but I'll do it, and I have no problems working hard as long as my manager treats me with respect.

The manager who hired me is cool, but the other guy is the worst fucking manager I've had in my life. He is extremely condescending, and constantly feels the need to tell me how to do things (often telling me something different than he told me before). I have been a manager at my other job for 3 years, and I'm not sure he knows that. I really want to just tell him how horrible he is, and that I'm not a dumbass, but for now I need the job.

You have one of the strangest beer lists I've ever seen.

And your place looks like a cheap diner mixed with a den in a hotel room.

But good luck to you. If the pizza is good and consistent, you should be fine.

I don't think the website is THAT bad. It's informative and answers pretty much any question someone might have about the place. It looks cheaply done, but honestly, it fits the restaurant.

I think you have a cap on what you can earn at your pizza place. Do you plan on opening up more pizza places?? If so, then that cap could raise. The only way you would really have a very high cap would be you were to open a dozen of these places, have them all be successful, and then sell the whole franchise.

But you're not going to make a ton of money just from one of those places.

However, I can say that he is absolutely no help in programming Visual Basic. I figured it out though...

and dont pull that in between pay period bullshit.

as someone who has owned a business for 10 years, i can promise you that you will be a failure, just based on the bs ive read here.
