Which formations do you guys use and why?

If i'm playing with a great team ie barcelona or spain (lol same team) i ususally use 4-1-2-1-2(1) not sure what the (1) means/does or why there are two of them. I don't really think the formations or numbers really affect the way i play with any given team that much, and online i never change the formation unless they have 5 defenders. I think its much more important where you put people. I generally end up putting players like Ibra, Villa or Torres in the midfield instead of leaving them as a forward (like generally in the middle/forward 2 or 1) so that i can crank shots from midfield since most people don't consider that an option. I'm generally of the mindset that the side with more shots on target will win. I don't get a fuck about possession or any of that bullshit. I've won games with 40% possession by not letting the other player get past midfield and taking shots as soon as i get the ball to someone who can shoot at whatever range they're at.



That being said i don't know shit about sports in general, and soccer is no exception.

I feel like they slowed this game down so much. The shooting and dribbling is better, passing is much harder but through passes are MUCH better.

Weird. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet.

I played my first ranked game online and was disappointed there was no RVP or Robben in the Netherlands' line up; not even in the subs.

I still beat the guy playing with Barca 1-0 though.

^^ I don't think so. In the game it mentions using them for tournaments, unranked online matches, exhibitions, etc.

It took me like 5 tries to get it to save and when it didn't save I'd have to go back and fill out all the information again...

Anyways, here's the 4-4-2 mesh of football and basketball players. Don't criticize my picks.

Then you have to have like 7 subs so I just downloaded some of the more popular players people have already made. The rankings for the players don't really have merit, I just filled out what I thought was just and the overall is the result. The team is listed as 'North Carolina State' if you want to take a look.

Edit: It messed up and put the wrong Wilson I deleted twice onto the team. Oh well, I'm not going through that BS again.

Edit 2: It list my team as North Carolina when I play . Also pretty lulzy to have a 7-foot keeper.

Finally starting to get better at this game. I've learned that the give-and-go is a necessity and the lobbed through ball is very useful. I didn't play FIFA 10 much but in the past I didn't have to use this stuff as much to score.

One thing I don't like is that it seems like there is a lot of just 'running into the defenders' and the ball haplessly bouncing around. Whats even more annoying is when that stupid lucky ass bounce gives the other team an easy goal.

I did a rainbow and hit a volley off of that from outside the box. You can control the distance your player flicks it over their head by touch on the controls.

thanks. i did the rainbow flick and it eventually went in. i used to do that all the time in the arena before the games would start but i didn't know it would count as a volley.

I've yet to play anyone online that didn't choose a 5* team. I'm getting real tired of playing Barca, Real Madrid and Chelsea every match.

I also inflate my ego by only playing with 4.5* teams. Atletico Madrid is a favorite of mine. Forlan and Aguero are a great duo but the barca/real forwards can fly by my defense pretty easily.

You kind of have to feel your opponent out. Sometimes if you show some indecisiveness on the team you pick and just chill on one for a minute, they'll pick something else. If they don't change it then it's an open invitation to pick the strongest team you possibly can. It's not always the most fun thing to do, but if you want to win you need to pick a strong team.

Also, I haven't played anyone so far with a voice headset. I stuck to unranked matches last year but I'd get the occasional latino with stereotypical music and family yelling in the background. No such luck yet

I refuse to play against anyone who uses Real Madrid or ManU. Mainly just got tired of being outrun to every through ball. Chelsea and Barca I'll usually play against because I match up with them better. I play with Bayern Munchen. Trio of Ribery, Robben, and Klose up front is sick.

i've actually had the opposite happen, i play as aston villa, who are a 4.5, but i seem to always get people who pick about the same level. i've yet to play barca or madrid online.

I've been trying to play possession style online because it seems like every single person I play against goes ultra-attacking and team press and sprints everywhere they can. If you play possession and just pass the ball around they get tired really easily. Except for Spain. Spain never gets tired. I refuse to play against them anymore.

Off topic, but I downloaded the demo for football manager 2011. It's surprisingly fun so far even though I have no knowledge of soccer strategy. Missed out on buying Neymar but I bought Frey from Fiorentina. Anyone played this series before? I hear it's addictive.

Recap of first-half of season in FM11

- 9th place in the table, 15 points behind the leader (chelsea)
- tevez leads the league with 18 goals and 6 man of the match awards
- bought Frey, Capdevila, Bassong, Nilmar, Alexis Sanchez and a striker prospect
- Boateng, Kompany, Adebayor and Barry all want out because of how crappy a manager I am
- get emails before every match saying I might be fired if there is a poor result
- I actually get a lot more emails about Mark Hughes possibly being fired that I do myself (lulz)

Highlight: After a long streak of losing that put me on the edge of the relegation zone, I switched to a 4-2-2-2 and tevez scores 4 goals in a 5-1 rout of Sunderland.

I preordered the game which doesn't come out until the 5th of November. They gave me a 'Sega Classics' with 20 games that either suck or for which I already have the roms.

Say goodbye to your life.

I recently finished a 10 (maybe more) season campaign where I took Exeter City from League 1 down to League 2 and then all the way up to the Premier League and qualified for Champions League one season from my 4th place finish. I never won any major trophies though and got kind of tired with it because it was just too small of a club to do anything major with. They're stadium was capped at 20000 for some reason so it just got kind of boring.

But this game is addicting like no other.

I did the exact same thing with Yeovil Town, I probably played 10-15 seasons. I feel like those regen superstars and players who came up through my team are my sons.

But I wouldn't touch the game again unless I knew I had nothing to do for the next year or two. Good luck in your FM journey, aph.

Yeah, my favorite player was this young midfielder that no one thought was going to be any good but I gave him a chance and he played at like a 7.1 as an 18 year old in League 1 or something. I gave him more playing time and he averaged like a 7.2 in League 1. So I gave him more playing time and he averaged like a 7.2 in the Championship while I was there. I thought he wouldn't ever be good enough to play in the EPL but I gave him a chance anyway and amazingly he still averaged like a 7.1. By the time I stopped playing the game he was like 29 and had the mental and physical stats of a worldwide superstar. The only thing that had held him back was his poor technical skills, but he was just one of those players that fit into my scheme perfectly and left everything out on the field so he always had a place in my team. If that guy had been real, he would be hands down my favorite player of all time. It makes me kind of sad that I don't ever play the game anymore and see him

But yeah, there should be an overall $ value for players in the game. If you buy a player, that value will go to whatever was paid for them, but after a season or two it will reset to market value.

I haven't played in about 2 weeks (funny since I made a huge countdown thread) and I hovered between a 3 and a 4. I never bothered playing with Man U, Chelsea, Barca, or Madrid though so I always squeezed some competition points out of each game.
