SCOTUS is way off base on a lot of shit. I'm surprised we still give the court so much power and trust in its rulings like they have to be the final word.

Show me a blue law and I'll show you a law passed for religious reasons, even if there are hints of secularism. The intent and persons behind almost all blue laws were fanatical believers pushing their agenda on the population.

So I officially emailed every member of the NCGA and the governor yesterday asking for their position on 18B-1004(c), the Sunday Sales Law prohibiting alcohol sales before noon, and if they support said law I asked for a single rational reason why NC should continue to enforce it. Thus far I've received six responses, all from Representatives, but the only reason I've been given in support is basically bc it's the status quo so why change it.

Rep. Graig Meyer (D) actually exchanged a few emails with me and said he would speak to my state representative today about the issue. You can all thank me when a bill is proposed during the long session next year revising or repealing the Sunday Sales Law.

Not with ^ that kind of attitude. A little ridicule goes a long way and if the only reason to continue enforcement of this prohibition is bc that's the way it's always been, then it's only a matter of time before the law changes.

Finally received a reply from my senator - he stated, "I have no issue with this prohibition [on alcohol sales until noon]." I replied and pressed him for a specific reason why the state should continue enforcement and he replied, "I have no problem with the current situation bc the vast majority of citizens have expressed no issue with the current law... There is plenty on legislators plates that needs our time and attention... If it is not broken, do not try to fix it."

Again, no legitimate justification for the prohibition other than not enough people have complained. Time to step up, TSB voters in NC. Email your state rep and senator and demand to be able to purchase alcohol on Sundays before noon and we can be the hope and change we've been waiting for!

Here is the reason, so you can quit harassing them:

X > Y

Where X = people who will be upset if the law is repealed, and Y = people who are upset with the law as it exists.

I wouldn't call emailing an elected official harassment. They're under no obligation to respond and most of them probably won't. Your formula is very astute, but it also assumes revising/repealing this law would actually upset someone - which goes to my whole point - who benefits from maintaining the status quo in this instance and who would be upset with a change in the law? I haven't been provided with a reason for either yet.

^^ I received a reply from Rep. Graig Meyer stating "there are quite a few legislators who would love to change this [law]," but he didn't name names. Based on our exchange I think it's clear he does not support the current law. My state rep, Charles Jeter, has also publicly stated he doesn't support the current law. But getting someone to publicly declare they're not in favor of something is a far cry from having them sponsor legislation effecting a change.

^ No, it's not obvious. Where in the bible does it say Jesus was displeased with grocery stores who sold wine before noon, eastern standard time?

The reality is that the drinking age should be a States Rights issue, but MADD got their claws into the feds, so any state that would decide to lower the drinking age would see a pretty substantial reduction in Federal highway money.

It's not going to change anytime soon, which is somewhat unfortunate. We have a pervasive binge drinking culture in this country, which causes problems for everyone.

Oh, and blue laws are retarded. West Coast states where you can buy booze at the grocery store are awesome- keeps the prices down for us who want to wet our whistle at a reasonable hour.

A nice gentleman in Raleigh has apparently started an online petition to repeal NCGS 18B-1004(c), aka, the law that says you can't buy or sell alcohol before noon on Sundays in NC. TSB should lend its support.

BAC driving laws are a fucking scam. If they were serious about people not drinking and driving they'd lower the acceptable BAC to 0 and allow discretion for anyone that blows a negligible amount.

I don't really care too much that I cannot purchase alcohol before 12 on a Sunday. What really ticks me off is that Happy Hours are illegal.

To be fair to those "fucking pussy as[sic] republicans," this law was in place long before they became the majority. And as my R state senator told me, they're dealing with bigger issues than Sunday alcohol sales at the moment, i.e., it will take a grassroots uprising to change this because there's no constituency pushing this right now and any legislator that takes the lead on this issue will suffer politically.

So, ^^, I would encourage you to contact your state house rep and senator and ask their position on this law and inform them you would like it changed.

I don't personally give enough of a fuck about it to start a campaign. I neither own nor work at a restaurant. I just find it funny the pro-business, anti-regulation GOP does not want to help the thousands of restaurants in NC.

A few more hours of those $12-$15 bloody Marys would amount to a lot of money in the restaurants and servers pockets. The GOP is only about cutting regs on huge corporations, they are not gonna do anything for independent or family owned businesses and workers.

We all have our items we're passionate about, so I understand not wanting to start a campaign about Sunday sales. But, you could have easily typed out an email and sent to both your state rep and senator in the time it took you to type that comment.

Be sure to thank your state representative for voting to ban powdered alcohol before it even became available in North Carolina - unless you happen to live in the district of one of the four (4) state reps who voted against this bill: Millis, Speciale, Yarborough, and Alexander - 3 R's and 1 D.

http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session=2015&BillID=hb290&submitButton=Go

Always good to see the NCGA continue to protect special interests like the NC Beer and Wine Wholesalers over greater consumer choice no matter which party is in charge.

I've definitely talked to internationals (i.e. this one Puerto Rican guy I knew 10 years ago) who agreed with the sentiment of the OP

I mean, other countries may drink more if the drinking age is lowered, but they probably drink more responsibly too.

It's like sex, really. We tell our kids that complete abstinence (from drink or fucking) is the only acceptable policy, rather than educating them on how to enjoy these pleasures in a responsible way. American is a wonderful country in many ways, but in certain respects (mostly involving Christian morals) we're unbelievably stupid.

I honestly like the happy hour law, what you end up getting is drink specials that last all day instead of from 5-7 or some shit. Its aggervating when traveling and a $2 beer jumps to $4.50 at 7pm.

Surely it's not lost on you that if a bar could have a happy hour special, that special would be WAY better than the drink specials that last all day. Additionally, in states where happy hour is legal bars still have daily drink specials that are valid the entire day.

because a $4.00 beer all day is better than having a $2 beer for a little while?

Poor folks in Newland, NC in Avery County are about to have to drive elsewhere to get their beer and wine. Newland Town Board voted to place a referendum on the ballot in November to end beer and wine sales at the behest of a single business owner who doesn't reside in town limits. The comments about some of his possible motivations are interesting.
