I really don't know why they keep minting these fuckers. The Susan B. Anthony was trouble because it was too easy to confuse with a quarter, despite its subtly octagonal shape. No one liked the Sacajawea. No one* still likes it with presidents on it.

*I actually think they're kind of a cool idea, but quite pointless. Now that the state quarters are over, why not do a series of quarters with the succession of presidents, then put ol' George back when the run is done? If I get one, I'll use it and won't generally mind, but for example if I happen to have $15 in ones I can't imagine carrying around 15 big heavy coins instead of 15 bills that fold neatly into my wallet and don't weigh much.

I LOVE $1 coins - makes drink machines go faster and easier.

However I have had run-ins in convenience stores where it caught them off guard. I think part of the problem is that cash drawers are designed for the current currency. If you ditched the penny you'd have room for a new coin without having to retool billions of retailers.

The problem is when we approach a girl with a $50 roll of coins in her pocket.

Is she happy to see me or is it just a roll of $1s?

Yeah but the train station is right next to restaurant so they get an overflow of dumbasses trying to pay with coins, thus the reason for the signs

A buddy from Winnipeg talked about how guys would always whip their $1 loonies at strippers. He made it sound pretty brutal, though I was left intrigued.

My buddy found out you could order these online from the government with a credit card and get free shipping so he ordered a bunch of $250 boxes of them (come in $25 rolls) and got all the frequent flyer miles with his credit card and then used them as cash.

"Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program

Only Need a Few? Try the Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program!

Is a $1,000 box of $1 coins too much for your needs? Here's your solution: the Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program. Now you can get circulating Presidential $1 Coins and Native American $1 Coins (non-numismatic coins) in quantities of $250 or $500, shipped directly from the United States Mint to you! The coins will arrive in boxes of 25-coin rolls within about two weeks, and the United States Mint will pay the standard shipping and handling costs (domestic orders only).

For the Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program, the United States Mint accepts credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover) and debit cards issued as check cards with a VISA or MasterCard logo. The United States Mint cannot process debit cards that require a PIN (personal identification number).

The intended purpose of the Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program is to make $1 coins readily available to the public, at no additional cost, so they can be easily introduced into circulation—particularly by using them for retail transactions, vending, and mass transit. Increased circulation of $1 coins saves the Nation money. The immediate bank deposit of $1 coins ordered through this Program does not result in their introduction into circulation and, therefore, does not comply with the intended purpose of the program."

http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/$1coin/?action=directShip

There has to be a way to get around that.

Flyertalk.com users abused the shit out of that and that is why they added that disclaimer. Also I heard some CC companies started cracking down on this too, but I have no proof if that is true.

Make it a law that you have to include all sales tax in the price, and make another law saying it has to be in 5 cent increments.

Rounding problem solved.

and then we can stop with that 9/10th of a cent bullcrap at the gas pump too.

It takes like 2 weeks for it to ship so you'd have to have pretty high reserves in order to max out this offer.

I just signed up to a credit card offer with 5% cashback rewards for the first year. It also gives a $100 bonus if I spend $799 in the first 3 months.

FYI:

Quote :
"FAQs: Currency
Legal Tender Status

Question: I thought that United States currency was legal tender for all debts. Some businesses or governmental agencies say that they will only accept checks, money orders or credit cards as payment, and others will only accept currency notes in denominations of $20 or smaller. Isn't this illegal?

Answer: The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, entitled 'Legal tender,' which states: 'United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues.'

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy."

Uh, what?
I say again:
Without pennies, we'd have [.05, .10, .15, .20, ... .90, .95], and that's it.
Think about how fucked up that would really be.

Having a hundredths place only half the time? Dumb.
If you're gonna have a hundredths place at all, you should have all one hundred of them, and thus pennies.
A cent is one hundredth of a dollar, so it's fucking retarded to be able to have five cents or ten cents, but not simply be able to have one.

Again, think about it:
We should be getting rid of dimes. They are 100% unnecessary.
Then we'd have the simple: 5 pennies per nickel, 5 nickels per quarter, and 4 quarters per dollar

...or, as mentioned, get rid of everything but dimes, eliminating the hundredths place.
(But that's lame, because you have to get rid of all the other coins.)

Quote :
"everything will increase in price by 4 cents [if we got rid of pennies.]"

This claim by H8R is what I've been addressing.
I'm not sure what rflong or merbig are saying exactly -- I thought they were defending H8R's point.
Quote :
"So something that is 1.99 with a 7% tax is really 2.1293, which a store would round to $2.13. Getting rid of the penny would mean they would probably round up to $2.15. A 2 cent increase."

Quote :
"Is it really difficult for you to figure out sales tax?

You have something that costs 2.95, with an 8% sales tax. You and I both know that when you walk up to that register, you ain't paying 2.95. Instead, you're going to be paying 3.186, rounded to $3.19."

You mean $3.20?, We're talking about there not being pennies, right?

As for what I think rflong is saying, the rounding would average out:

2.90 with 8% tax is 3.132, rounded(.01) is $3.13, rounded(.05) is $3.15, or +2
2.91 with 8% tax is 3.1428, rounded(.01) is $3.14, rounded(.05) is $3.15, or +1
2.92 with 8% tax is 3.1536, rounded(.01) is $3.15, rounded(.05) is $3.15, or even
2.93 with 8% tax is 3.1644, rounded(.01) is $3.16, rounded(.05) is $3.15, or -1
2.94 with 8% tax is 3.1752, rounded(.01) is $3.18, rounded(.05) is $3.20, or +2
2.95 with 8% tax is 3.186, rounded(.01) is $3.19, rounded(.05) is $3.20, or +1
2.96 with 8% tax is 3.1968, rounded(.01) is $3.20, rounded(.05) is $3.20, or even
2.97 with 8% tax is 3.2076, rounded(.01) is $3.21, rounded(.05) is $3.20, or -1
2.98 with 8% tax is 3.2184, rounded(.01) is $3.22, rounded(.05) is $3.20, or -2
2.99 with 8% tax is 3.2292, rounded(.01) is $3.23, rounded(.05) is $3.25, or +2
3.00 with 8% tax is 3.24, rounded(.01) is $3.24, rounded(.05) is $3.25, or +1
etc....
