^^ Charlotte need to grow a bit more before being able to support a third pro team. Saturation issues and whatnot. Agreed MLB would be a natural fit eventually there though.

Raleigh is ready for another one and MLS seems too perfect. I suspect it won't be this go around though. Cincy and Tampa maybe..

I wonder if the Bulls/Mudcats affect whether we can get an MLB team. Isn't there something to do with having a minor league in a certain proximity of the major team isn't allowed?

I'd love to see an MLB team here but I agree it would go to Charlotte first. They've already got the Knights and can expand that to a full size MLB stadium if needed.

If we could support a team, imagine that shit on Dorthea Dix hill with the city in the background.

If you like soccer fine, but all this appropriation of European sporting culture and attitudes are obnoxious.

I can't even find a parking spot to go to Fat Daddy's for lunch. How the fuck is this going to work? I'm all for the team coming but I am struggling to understand how parking and traffic are going to work.

Not really. The footprint of the property of the current stadium isn't big enough for an MLB stadium. It would have to be on a different site. But that's at least a decade from legitimate discussion anyway.

^i thought the whole purpose of the Knights stadium was that it could be expanded to MLB standards.

Interesting sales pitch, but I don't see a stadium going downtown in time for an expansion team this time around.

I would assume they would play at their current place until the stadium was done if we were to be awarded one.

I know, but it could be years before something could get done. Some other cities may be able to get it done faster.

Tepper has more money.

I am surprised they chose Charlotte cause they want to re-purpose BOA Stadium. Thought they were requiring soccer specific stadiums for all teams.

Almost a third of MLS plays in non-soccer specific stadiums.

Two reasons I don't expect Raleigh to get a team anytime soon:

They need to actually have approval to build the new stadium in Downtown South. Just having a plan isn't enough.

Existing attendance for NCFC isn't impressive. I'm sure some of that has to do with its current location since getting in/out is a traffic nightmare. Since Raleigh doesn't have the same level of corporate sponsorship, they've got to have confidence that attendance will be sufficient.

^ Somebody's going to have to explain to me the need for a nearly $2 billion complex for a NWSL team and 2nd-tier men's team. There's absolutely zero chance they won't eventually ask for public money for that (even though they currently claim it will be privately funded), and I hope they get laughed out of the room and ridiculed mercilessly in the press when they ask.

The traffic situation at WakeMed isn't perfect obviously, but I think that's way down the list of reasons why the teams (at least the men's team) don't/doesn't draw. The main reason IMO is that it's a minor league team, and there's next to no reason to get emotionally invested in it. The local soccer fan crew can try and spin it with the "support your local team" stuff, but why on Earth would I choose to watch NCFC in person in 95 degree heat when I can turn on the TV and watch the best leagues in the world. The "Big 4" leagues in this country work because they're the respective best in the world in each sport. MLS might be the 20th best soccer league in the world, so I don't see any reason to get excited about it (and USL even less so). If the whole "America #1" gets you wound up, I guess you can talk yourself into MLS being exciting, otherwise no thanks.

yeah you are right, forgot about big ones like Seattle and Atlanta. it was actually pretty fun to watch atlanta play in that relatively large stadium full of people.

I just hope Tepper can make it happened and make BOA feel like a real soccer stadium. Went to Charlotte to watch Arsenal this summer it wasn't the best experience or atmosphere. granted the stadium barely had any people, even if you filled the lower bowl, it is just too big to offer an engaging soccer experience.

are you talking about downtown south? they already said they needed public money for loan servicing and facility maintenance

^^^

FC Cincinnati while in the USL averaged 25k in attendance which I know was a huge driver as to why they got an MLS team. NCFC can't crack 5k. As popular as soccer is in our region, we should be able to spur better attendance figures.

That said, Charlotte had even worse numbers than NCFC in attendance, but they have the stadium and Tepper is willing to put in the money to make BOA more of a multi-purpose entertainment venue. We get the stadium I think a team could soon follow, but we have to do it fast enough that MLS doesn't award franchises to others in a better situation and caps league membership.
