I'm trying to justify getting one of these for my wife, it just seems like it will be really expensive to have to buy a new book every week. She reads at least one book a week. Normally she checks multiple books out at the library, which is obviously FREE. I might have to hold off on buying the kindle or sony touch until they come up with a way to "check books out" with the e-reader.

I was under the impression there were a lot of free books available, especially classicsI guess it depends on what type of books she's reading

^^ unless I'm mistaken, wake county libraries (and many others) support check-outs with the kindle through Adobe's system.

Ahahahaha my wife just found out the hard way that Kindles don't do page numbers. Makes it kind of hard to do citations or in-class readings for school. I think she's ready to burn Amazon to the ground now.

^ Kindle Page Number Tool - http://vimeo.com/6436350you can still cite a kindle book as a source, there is a standard format for doing so.[Edited on November 18, 2010 at 10:45 AM. Reason : ]

^ i'm confused...are you saying you got the kindle 3 to read epubs?
11/18/2010 3:09:12 PM
I was able to remove the drm from an epub, and then using calibre I am going to transfer the epub to my kindle 2 tonight when I get home

For anyone looking at the cover, it's pricey but very awesome. I got the brown one and it looks great, and the light works perfectly. It does basically double the weight of the kindle, but it's no more than a thick mass market paperback. For me it's easier to hold with the cover also.

Wait, so for Kindle there's no way to keep track of page numbers? So if the book isn't done in shortish chapters then you're just fucked for educational use?Damnit guys, I was SET on a Kindle, but this means it would be WORTHLESS for my classes.

It keeps track of percentage and "location". you can also jump to chapters, bookmarks, etc. I think what you mean is there's no way to keep track of pages compared to the physical book. Like page 50 in the actual book is where on the Kindle. Right? Don't know if you can do that.

Citing isn't my concern. What I'm asking is, are you able to go to a page number in the book at your choosing without having bookmarked it?

Kobo FTW. Works with the Wake County Public Library.

anyone read "NC State Basketball: 100 Years of Innovation" on the kindle, it seems like some shit is out of order

So I noticed my Kindle started showing a slight crack in the lower left of the case near the screen. Called Amazon and they said it was because of the defective leather case I had gotten. The guy was extremely helpful and is overnighting me a new Kindle and refunded the leather case and gave me an additional $25 and recommended I get the newer case or the case with a light. I am very impressed with Amazon's customer service. Didn't even have to wait to talk to someone.

Kindle adds page numbers (that match with paper and ink versions) and shared notes (like from a professor)http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward/2011/02/kindle_adds_real_page_numbers.html

Check out http://www.lendink.com/. Pretty awesome way to read new books for free on a Kindle or Nook.

I made this post using my kindle
2/8/2011 8:46:42 PM
^^^ now, if only they'd add epub support
2/9/2011 7:46:19 AM
sigh, that's the only thing frustrating me at this point...I really would like to go kindle over nook, but the lack of epub and library lending is really an annoyance.
2/11/2011 7:18:53 PM
^Is it really that hard for y'all to take the 3 seconds it takes to convert epub to Kindle? The software is free and it's so easy. And you can lend books right?http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200549320Or you could just log into someones account. Download all their books. Then back into yours. Magic! All their books are yours! (I think this loop hole still works).

one is free and legal ... one is illegal and takes effort on my part to accomplish.hrmmm

You can get a kindle $25 cheaper now if you're willing to live with ads as screensavers and on your home screen. I'd do that no question if I didn't already have one.http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Special-Offers-Wireless-Reader/dp/B004HFS6Z0/ref=amb_link_355949182_4?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=1DYRZKFCZ17Z4HNJXENZ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1293694602&pf_rd_i=507846
