remember when everyone on here was all pissy about the tom o'brien hire? and then, like, everyone loved the hire. our fans are emotional, reactionary, unstable, inconsistent, and just plain fucking suck.

seriously, is the argument against her that all those championships came in non revenue sports? i seem to recall everyone throwing a fucking fit because we couldn't compete in women's volleyball under fowler. make up your goddamn minds, people

Tob hasn't worked out either has it. No one cared we weren't competitive in wvb it was the fact he wouldn't even fire the wvb coach that said something. Go to one of their gaMes and see how many people give a damn

At first I was all "why do so many people give a fuck about the new women's backetball/volleyball/whatever coach"

Then I saw

"wowowowow. i thought this was a joke thread until i stumbled my way over to PrickPride

sure enough, Kay's sister is our new AD"

I'm not sure what Charlie Cobb has done to make him so much better than Yow. Won Division I-AA football national championships (Jerry Moore has been there since 1989, so he gets no more credit than Yow does for Gary Williams' championship). Hired Buzz Peterson back (left after one decent year). Hired Jason Capel, whose coaching resume was 10 months experience as an assistant to Buzz Peterson.

The only two things that appear to distinguish Cobb are 1) male and 2) experience in the NC State Athletics Department.

My only real concerns about Yow are 1) letting Fridge name a "coach in waiting", effectively making him all but unfirable (at least with Maryland's resources and political climate) and 2) friction with Fridge and Gary Williams (although they both have pretty abrasive personalities).

TOB on the new hire:

http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/06/25/tom-obrien-knows-he-might-not-be-long-for-nc-state-job/

Quote :
"Speaking even before the Yow-to-NCSU rumors reached their boiling point Thursday night, head coach Tom O'Brien admitted that, with a new chancellor and new athletic director in the offing, he faces an uphill battle to retain his job if he doesn't turn the program around post haste.

"Certainly you get evaluated differently because it's not the people who brought you in, who did the research to bring you in," O'Brien told the Raleigh News & Observer.

"I don't think there's ever a make-or-break season. But the situation has changed. The chancellor I came here with and the athletic director I came here with are no longer here. Things have changed a lot.

"How that's going to affect our situation won't be solved until the chancellor and new AD decide what direction -- or if there's a new direction -- they want to go in."

O'Brien has finished with seven losses during each of his three seasons in Raleigh and, obviously, has never led the Wolfpack to a bowl game. As he embarks on his fourth year at the school, and given the abject mediocrity of his regime thus far, it may not have mattered who the AD or chancellor or anybody else was; their direction would've been very much pointing toward O'Brien's backside residing firmly on the hot seat entering the 2010 season.

[Writer's note: O'Brien has indeed led the Wolfpack to a postseason game, the 2008 PapaJohns.com Bowl. Which they lost. My apologies for the most egregious error.]"

Actually, they are a big deal. A well rounded athletics program is very important to any state university. If you're expecting ANY AD to turn us into UF or UT (the good one -- not the hillbilly one) then you are in for a surprise.

This is a big fucking deal

Remember when Lee Fowler being out AD was a big fucking deal because of how bad he was at it?

This is the potential opposite of that.

Its fucking true though. We could use a lot more of that mentality around NCSU no matter whose quote it is.

Same goes with Carmichael Gym, the shitty dorms all over campus, the mega dump of a bookstore, Hillsborough street (finally going through some reno), etc.

We could use a lot of window dressing at NC State to be more inviting to outsiders/prospective students/family/fans and anyone else who visits raleigh!

^ Well they are doing a lot to improve that perception of the campus. Most of the classroom/faculty buildings on campus are pretty nice, they added the Carmichael Rec Center, are improving the Atrirum over the next year and Talley/Bookstore are getting a massive overhaul. Issue with Hillsbourgh is that no investor wants to dump money into it because it is incredibly tough to get past neighborhood issues for a parking deck, club or something that will cause more noise on the street.

I don't really like the fact that she quoted Dean, but that quote is true. At least it wasn't another story about Kay like the 50 anecdotes about her we got in the press conference.

How can you not acknowledge 20 national championships? I mean we joke about Bass Fishing and that's all we've got. Are you seriously telling me you wouldn't like to see our soccer, volleyball, track, etc. teams improve? Success in those sports only helps the bigger ones.

Very poor choice of words.

This would be like becoming the pastor of an extremely conservative church and during your first sermon mentioning that you are a fan of the devil and hope to implement some of his practices.

What about our national titles in wrestling, diving, and golf in the past couple of years? Yes individual titles, but if you're talking about non-revenue titles you can't discount those. I don't really have a point relevant to the AD argument, this is more of a point of clarification.

If you think this is a home run hire you are kidding yourself

Conversely, if you think this is a disastrous hire you are equally delusional.

Sure there is, it would be someone who made undeniably good hires in both revenue sports, like the dude at Missouri who hired Gary Pinkel AND Mike Anderson.

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/voices/blogpost/7866165/

Quote :
"She comes from a family and sisterhood that is synonomous with N.C. State. She has 20 years of experience as an athletics director, 16 in a major conference. She took Maryland's athletics department debt from a near $51 million and reduced that to just over $5 million during her tenure. Maryland won more than 20 national championships in her time there.

But there has to be an issue with every hire. Why did football and men's basketball struggle in recent years, especially football? And the main one - why did she have a lousy relationship with Gary Williams and Ralph Friedgen?

Jeff Barker covers Maryland for the Baltimore Sun and he says there is more than one way to look at her dealings with the Terp's high profile coaches.

"This is where you get in this grey area. Was it an issue of she just was expecting a lot of her coaches or was she micromanaging and being a little overbearing?" Barker told 620 The Buzz on Monday morning. "The criticism that I heard from fans and also friends of Williams and Friedgen is that she can cross the line as constantly sending text messages and criticized them for the way that they made a certain statement to the press or things the coaches thought were over the line.""
