a guy who used to work for me told me all about a guy getting marked by a dying mule and another one getting marked by a frog. My grandmother's maid who used to babysit me also said that a birthmark on my back meant that I was marked by a peanut since my mother did most of the spraying of the peanut crop the summer I was born. It is also widely believes that the first person to carry a baby around the house after it is born will cause the baby to take after it. I also know a lot of people who believe in roots, but that is another subject.

What do you mean "believe in roots"?

according to some superstitions, the things a pregnant woman does impacts the child. The guy's mother supposedly laughed at a convulsing and defecating dying mule, so the guy was incontinent and had a tremor. the other guy was crippled from the waist down having "frog legs" because his mother stepped on a frog. the man who told me this believed it as seriously as a person could believe something. Roots are like spells or curses that can be put on people by "root workers" or "root doctors." the concept is akin to voodoo.

Uhh... where are you from?

The only superstition that I believe in is that if I draw my crysknife from its sheath, it must draw blood before I put it away again.

Bladen County. Most of these superstitions are part of black culture, but I do know white people who believe them.

I've heard that before. Like how a mother doing cocaine can have a cocaine-addicted baby, and drinking alcohol can give birth to a baby with alcohol related birth defects

I do the salt over the shoulder.I kiss the clock at 11:11.I knock on wood.I try my best not to talk shit before nc state games because I think it will jinx us (either that or we just always suck).I don't really care about an umbrella inside, or black cats. But I do think that everything happens for a reason. I feel like no action goes without a consequence, whether good or bad.

Hmmm maybe that's why I'm having shitty luck these days [Edited on December 13, 2010 at 1:14 AM. Reason : I hate cats and black cats freak me out]

My mom has a lot of weird New Years Day superstitions. You gotta eat collard greens because if you do you'll make money that year. (I hate collards but I'm pretty sure that's not why I'm poor)You can't do laundry because you'll wash out a member of the family (that is, they'll die). You gotta eat black-eyed peas for...health, I think? She also does the black cat thing.[Edited on December 13, 2010 at 2:18 AM. Reason : Oh, so apparently she's not the only lunatic around]

When I grew up, I believed that stepping on a crack was bad luck. Then one day I stopped caring. I believed that's the same day that I learned phrase "Fuck this".

I don't put all the menus away at night until it is closing time. If I do someone will come in 5 minutes before closing. I always assume NC State is going to lose.

I used to have a cashier job back in the day. One day we only had purple and red pens at the counter for some unknown reason. I had a woman refused to sign her credit card receipt until I dug up a black pen because "signing your name in red ink is bad luck." Apparently purple ink was also bad luck because it had to use red ink to make it
