So I was just at Fullsteam in Durham today to sample their beers. Apparently I missed their opening night "Baby Bjorn Brawl" as some dude cut in front of another one with a Baby Bjorn on, and a bar fight ensued and 3 people got kicked out for being wankers. Place doesn't have AC, but they have fans and it's very big- 1/2 a warehouse. So, you can get half-pints to try out their beers. Cool. Anyway, my opinions on what's currently on tapBasil Summertime Ale: very popular, sold out and didn't get to try it. Boo.Hogwash Hickory-Smoked Porter- very um, smoky, and smooth. Could see it with salty foodand its target pairing, NC, downeast BBQ.Rocket Science IPA- soapy, didn't like it.Carver Sweet Potato Lager- a hint of sweet potato, pretty earthy and fresh. Drank 1.5 pintsand my favorite. El Toro Cream Ale- pretty good, reminded me of a Genny Cream. I recommend.

^^Honestly, most of the beer drinkers I know hate Red Oak Amber. Too earthy tasting, too much honey, not enough hops. But there's always someone in the bar who loves this beer. Personally, I'm not a fan at all, but it does have some avid fans.

Sam's Quik Shop is pretty awesome... I think they've helped Durham beer drinkers become a little bit more educated about their selections. And, the metalheads who run the place are pretty friendly, too.

if you havent ever done so, I highly recommend the Boylan Bridge Brewpub's brew tour. It's every Wednesday night at 7pm and Mark, the brewmaster, is really knowledgeable and gave us a VIP tour of their entire facility. As for the beers? The summer ale is my favorite, but they've got 5 others that should suit any beer aficionado's taste.

CBC makes the best [local] Oktoberfest that I've tried....but I think you can only buy it at the brewery in Holly Springs...

^You can only get bottles of it at the brewery, there's kegs of it at plenty of bars.

Lonerider's Shotgun Betty is, by far, my favorite beer.As for wine, I recommend Old North State Winery's Bare Bones or Restless Soul.

Pisgah Brewery in black mountain near asheville makes AMAZING organic beers. Try Solstice, its a wheat type ale with about 9% alcohol.

^Solstice is pretty good. I was at their brewery last year for a festival. Free beer samples.

I like me some Big Boss Bad Penny

Check out Cardinal Gin (made in Kings Mountain, NC). Its a very floral gin but great in a tonic. Was about $29 at the ABC in North Raleigh. Only 1, maybe 2 gins at the store I like better.

There are 13 breweries in Asheville alone, making it the most breweries per capita in the world. Silver Coast is another winery near the SC line on 17.
