I would love to go down to the beach for the day on friday just to watch the swells
8/31/2010 6:04:18 PM
Joe Bastardi just said that it is likely to hit late Thursday night into early Friday morning. The good news, from what he said, is that if there is a shift in the forecast track that it would be in a more westerly direction.
8/31/2010 6:12:46 PM
While not all hurricanes are bad to sit through, I really hope this one slows down. I would really not like my family back home to have to evacuate and have a shit ton of damage to our house... Not to mention some of my best friends are there.. *sigh*
8/31/2010 6:38:53 PM
Damn you magicseaweed
8/31/2010 7:46:38 PM
sorry for double post...The official evacuation order for Ocracoke Island was just given.

some interesting pics from my friend who lives in St. John USVI[Edited on August 31, 2010 at 9:48 PM. Reason : x]

Why does this shit always roll through NC at night.....At least in the day you can see shit going down. AT night you just sit there anxiously or sleep restless.

8/31/2010 11:53:24 PM
^^you're in Wilmington, you're not gonna get hit with anything severe.
9/1/2010 8:26:03 AM
I <3 Wilmington
9/1/2010 8:29:11 AM
So I've got a flight scheduled to arrive at RDU about 9PM on Friday. Is this gonna be gone by then?
9/1/2010 8:39:59 AM
i have a bunch of family that lives on the OBX.... my nana is actually a bit worried
9/1/2010 8:56:30 AM
^ my mom, too... which is why I'm worried, because she's gone through 20+ years of hurricanes I think Fran (or was it Floyd?) is starting to look like a cake walk compared to this one
9/1/2010 8:59:33 AM
Fran was more southern NC like wilmington as opposed to the OBX. Floyd would be the one you are thinking about would be my guess.
9/1/2010 9:07:56 AM
Fran was pretty hardcore on Carteret County. I remember going driving around with my family afterwards to look at damage. Floyd was just a bunch of rain and flooding.
9/1/2010 9:11:11 AM
Fran straight proper fucked wrightsville beachHad close to 7 feet of storm surge in the first floor of our beach cottage on harbor island[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 11:37 AM. Reason : harbor]
9/1/2010 11:37:04 AM
Visitors of Hatteras Island were ordered to gtfo this morning as well. I took some pictures in south Nags Head again this morning around Surfside drive and Jennette's Pier, I'll throw them up in my gallery here shortly.
9/1/2010 11:41:09 AM
Yeah, I meant Fran because I lived in Carteret County at the time. With the size of this hurricane, I consider Havelock/Cape Lookout to pretty much be in this hurricane's path[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 12:42 PM. Reason : it f'ed up our street in Newport]
9/1/2010 12:41:34 PM
Fumbler was just called to be in kinston by 6 tonight so he could be on standby for assistance w/ his incident management team. he works with the nc forest service. looking at the path now, it looks like it's coming a little less inland and i would imagine that most of the problems would be washout and stuff. not many trees to cut up. hopefully he'll still get to come to my family's beach house this weekend. i don't think it's going to be that bad. the cone of uncertainty just barely brushes the outer banks. emerald isle, according to the mayor, is expecting winds no higher than 60mph (which regularly occurs during the winter). yeah i don't think it'll be that big of a deal. i'm not a meteorologist though[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 1:29 PM. Reason : ]
9/1/2010 1:25:59 PM
Unless there are massive power outages I'm still going to the beach this weekend.
9/1/2010 1:40:11 PM
^ not unless they're only allowing those with passes back on the OBX...
9/1/2010 2:04:54 PM
^^Thanks. After I posted that I found RDU's twitter and they basically said the same thing.
9/1/2010 2:44:03 PM
I came down to Rodanthe to prep my folks' house...traffic was backed from the south end of the bridge to the north end of Mirlo Beach when we got here about an hour and a half ago. Its now backed up to the edge of Waves/Salvo. Northbound traffic on 12 is slow enough you can count lugnuts.
9/1/2010 3:00:50 PM
Sounds like a shitty Richard Gere movie
9/1/2010 3:03:24 PM
^^^^lol, if that's the case then it's bad enough that I don't want to be there[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 3:05 PM. Reason : ^]
9/1/2010 3:03:36 PM
It's not looking so good for the obx
9/1/2010 5:19:42 PM
they STILL dont know when this thing will start turning...looks like the low pressure that is pushing it west is really hard to predict.as long as we get some more rain, im happy.
9/1/2010 6:55:19 PM
It appears it is making the turn now which means great news for everyone other than those hoping for destruction.
9/1/2010 8:11:32 PM
It did start to make the northern turn, but it actually looks to be headed slightly west again. Also, it appears to be becoming annular. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annular_hurricane
9/1/2010 8:28:15 PM
anyone have a chart that shows the locations of the eye at each update? to show if it wobbled any and what not
9/1/2010 8:31:03 PM
Pretty good animationStarting to look like we might see a Cat5[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 8:50 PM. Reason : ]
9/1/2010 8:38:24 PM
pressure drop and that is a good animation...you can clearly see the west then north bobble and then west again
9/1/2010 8:51:39 PM
Central pressure at 932. Earl is entering beast mode.
9/1/2010 9:19:46 PM
Wow, you OBX folks really need to pray this thing takes that NNE turn and that cold front comes in quicker. This could be an absolutely destructive force on Hatteras if it doesn't... Cat 5 overnight?[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 9:32 PM. Reason : x]
9/1/2010 9:31:23 PM
Just so you know AB and EI island has a mandatory evactuation. Forcing all tourists to leave, and they will try to force all of us that live here to leave, but most of us aren't.
9/1/2010 9:49:52 PM
good thinking![Edited on September 1, 2010 at 10:01 PM. Reason : .]
9/1/2010 10:01:35 PM
I'll preface this by saying I've never had family or personal belongings in an area where you would be warned of damage (I lived in CA but earthquakes are impossible to predict as of now) but I think it's the dumbest thing on earth to try and "gut it out" when mother nature's destructive forces are barreling down on you. While I'd feel bad for anyone who lost belongings because of a storm like this if you don't have the brains to get out of dodge, then anything that happens to you personally you had coming.[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 10:12 PM. Reason : in other words ignoring a mandatory evacuation -- don't know if that's the case here]
9/1/2010 10:11:57 PM
I've got family that's lived on the outer banks since the colonial days. To them, riding out a storm is just part of beach culture. Everything they own and everything they know is on the islands. They might consider high-tailing it if a Cat5 ever gets forecasted, but beyond that they'd rather stick around so they can start cleaning up immediately after the storm and not have to worry about all the assholes that come in after a disaster to start looting.
9/1/2010 10:17:17 PM
Strong possibility it could be Cat5 by the 11pm update[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 10:21 PM. Reason : ]
9/1/2010 10:18:31 PM
wow^he is really coming together nicely. thats a gorgeous eye.
9/1/2010 10:37:47 PM
The eye on this thing is insane....and now I'm extra worried that sawahash mentioned AB has a mandatory evacuation. My family is going to ride it out in Havelock which is really only a hop skip and a jump away from AB I"m mainly worried about the sheer amount of huge ass trees all around our house..
9/1/2010 10:38:05 PM
11:00 PM EDT Wed Sep 1Location: 27.8°N 73.8°WMax sustained: 140 mphMoving: NNW at 18 mphMin pressure: 932 mbdamn. still category 4, for now. hope AB can avoid this monster.
9/1/2010 10:59:58 PM
This is gonna be either one of the closest calls ever to avoiding a massive disaster, or something is gonna get freaking wrecked because Earl is a beast.
9/1/2010 11:08:50 PM
In the past three hours: winds up 5mph to 140mph, pressure down to 932mb from 941mb.
9/1/2010 11:10:18 PM
Looks like it definitely made a wobble more northerly but appears to have moved back into a NW movement for the time being. Until we see it at the very least heading due north there should be a lot of nervous people out there.
