He's more of an executive-type, but the best alumni candidate would be Gary Stokan:http://www.ajc.com/business/atlanta-sports-councils-stokan-226341.htmlThere's probably no way in hell he'd ever take the job, though.I'd still prefer someone with no connection to the university.
5/4/2010 4:55:55 PM
I said it in the other thread, but Bill Cowher would be a terrible choice for AD. Please dont get that $hit started in here.

Gary Stokan's answer: "No thanks"http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/05/04/467459/stokan-move-basketball-to-reynolds.html
5/4/2010 9:43:54 PM
Stokan would be a good option. Not in love with the idea of moving back to Reynolds since it would take a lot to really improve Reynolds to the point where we could have about 15,000 seats. Duke can do it with a much smaller alumni base, but it would be really difficult for us to do something like that and just not worth it. Win and the RBC will rock just like Reynolds used to.I think you have to look at Purcell, but I would prefer someone new simply because Purcell has worked with these people for years in the athletic department. I don't want to have to rely on someone who knows some of these people to have to fire them, because we're gonna need more new blood in other positions than just AD - clean out the whole department.
5/4/2010 9:57:36 PM
I love Reynolds Coliseum, I love itBut we're never gonna go back to playing all our home games there...not after having the RBC built even though they do share it with an NHL teamI wouldn't mind more than one game a year there though, maybe one of the UNC/Duke/Wake games a year or something
5/4/2010 10:00:51 PM
I'm OK with having more games at Reynolds, maybe even some ACC games against opponents that aren't huge draws (like Miami or BC) but playing all our games there is a bad idea.
5/4/2010 10:02:14 PM
I would love to play one big game there a year. I doubt we get a Duke/UNC game there, but I would love for them to clean the place up a bit (new windows, new railings w/o paint chipping off, video board, etc.) and have one big game a year against a lesser ACC opponent or big out of conference opponent. To fully move back there like Stokan was talking about would require a ton of construction on the place to add in boxes and more seating and I think they've already deemed that unrealistic. The one thing I've always wanted to experience sports-wise is a game at Reynolds against a legitimate opponent. I just don't want to keep playing teams like GA Southern for our once a year game there. It'd also help if our sports information dept. did its damn job and promoted the hell out of a return to Reynolds. Make it a big game with a 7:00 PM start time that could get on ESPN. [Edited on May 4, 2010 at 10:05 PM. Reason : catsup]

Hey Chancellor Woodson,Buy an AD! (it had to show up at some point)
5/4/2010 10:13:14 PM
I read on Pack Pride that Woodson has said he knows we'll have to spend more to get a top AD. I like where this guy's head is at. Spend the money and get guaranteed results, don't dick around and potentially end up with getting another Turner or Fowler.
5/4/2010 10:15:12 PM

I fell in love w/ Stokan w/ his idea of Reynolds...dear God, please let him be our AD...

No on associated with the athletic department right now. Also, Purcell is apparently too valuable in his current position.Person has to be very competitive and have lots of connections
5/4/2010 11:49:18 PM
The only issue I have with saying he's too valuable in the Wolfpack Club is that I would hate to lose him if another school wanted him to become AD and he took that job. I really hope Woodson does a great job with the search and we end up with someone who will actually have passion for his job for the first time since Jimmy V was AD.
5/4/2010 11:50:56 PM
5/4/2010 11:58:38 PM
I understand that, but I've seen some people dismiss him simply because they want someone new. I think Purcell should get a legitimate look, but I hope we get new blood at the top of the department who can fire people he doesn't have emotional ties with. I just hope it doesn't come at the cost of losing Purcell and having to get a new fundraising head as well.
5/5/2010 12:18:24 AM
Are we really in danger of losing Purcell if we don't give him the AD job? I mean isn't a lot of the reason why he's been so successful in fundraising because of his connections in eastern NC? It's not like he's going to pick up and move to Arkansas or wherever and instantly have connections with a bunch of locals with deep pockets.

5/5/2010 12:50:43 AM
love it when the reporter asks (about an interim AD) "well do you have anyone in mind?"and Woodson kinda smirks and goes "Well of course I do"he's all like "shiiiit man, you know i got my mess together"
5/5/2010 1:15:35 AM
I've been on Team Charlie Cobb for years.....look at App State's athletics. And really who was he supposed to hire for basketball coach? They've never had success in basketball much. Hard to get basketball players to Boone. Even still basketball had their best season ever 3 years ago under Houston Fancher.
5/5/2010 2:07:09 AM
you're all right...i just hate jason capel...he and his jump shot are so f'n ugly.

Ok, see the other two sports where I commented on baseball and basketball where he hired Pollard, Fancher, and Buzz.
5/5/2010 11:45:02 AM
re: baseball and stuff that's great, and all I wanted to know. I know Cobb's done some nice things for App's buildings but the guy we got rid of did a lot of that as well. As for the basketball situation, maybe he could have hired a coach that wouldn't bolt on them late in the hiring process after just one season? You think Fowler wouldn't have been crucified if we had Calipari for a couple years, then he bolted on us for Kentucky leaving a trail of NCAA sanctions?I'm not saying Cobb is a bad hire, App has done a great job of taking their football success and spinning it towards improving their public image and bringing in better students, and I'm sure he's been involved with that. It's just an easy, simple hire and I'd rather the university not jump right into that. If they look at all the options out there and he's still the best, then I'm good
5/5/2010 11:49:22 AM
I was happy to hear that we were getting a search firm...that means that the job is open to anyoneIt's better than playing it close to the chest like Fowler did in his coaching searches. This way it is public knowledge that it's anyone's game[Edited on May 5, 2010 at 11:57 AM. Reason : as]

Some thoughts for all those wanting Purcell - success leading a fundraising organization doesn't necessarily equate to success leading an athletics department. I think the tasks associated with the two jobs are very different, and require a different set of skills (not saying there's no overlap, but not enough overlap to say "hey, he's good at one, he'd be a natural at the other...")It's sort of like assuming that someone who's a great bartender would also be a great chef - while both do require some similar abilities, they are very different jobs. And really, if you have a great bartender but a terrible head chef, it's probably best to replace the chef with someone from the outside and leave the bartender where he's been successful. At least then you don't risk being stuck with bad food AND bad drinks...or something like that.
