This dickhead in a white SUV backed out the driveway across from mine yesterday evening and knocked over a full trash can in front of 4305 Hunters Club Drive. He drove off without picking it up.

There is a silver nissan maxima with the license plate D'Angelo who is a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE driver. He'll weave in and out and if he sees someone with a turn signal on in the lane he is in he speeds up to get in front of them instead of letting them merge and if they get in front of them he honks, tailgates, and then speeds off when he can.

This old lady on Glendwood near O'Maley's was in the left lane of traffic on a Friday afternoon when everyone was going a decent rate. She comes to a dead stop in the left traveling lane with no turn signal or anything. Waits for traffic to die down on the other side and slowly makes a U-Turn.

Parking really pisses me off. I've seen so many times where someone will park crooked as hell and be too lazy to spend 10 seconds fixing it. It ends up causing a chain reaction where other people judge their orientation to them. So you end up with a row of cars where people are crooked. This is especially true in places with really tight parking spaces.

A few days ago, at the outdoor track across from Carmichael, some lady decided to take up 2 parking spaces at the parking places outside of the bus stop where the 2 and 3 stop. Anyway, the bitch just took up 2 fucking parking spaces so she and her husband could take out lawn chairs and watch what was presumably their child on the track.

I wanted to go up there and hit her so bad.

I remember a few months ago, I was making a left at a light. It was one of those lights were there were 2 left hand turn lanes. Well, the light turned green, and I was in the right left turn lane. Well, I keep (try to anyway) in my lane, and this dumb bitch who was in the left lane decides to get into the right hand lane as I'm besides her. She was completely oblivious to me. Well, I have to jam on my brakes to keep from being ran off the road.

I get besides her and proceeded to give her the finger. Her mouth just DROPPED open in astonishment. My roommates, who were in the car, laughed.

I saw a guy do this once, it worked. There was road construction ahead and the right lane was closed, of course some people stayed in the right lane going past everyone in the left. Suddenly the left lane was empty so I looked in my rearview and saw some guy in a pickup riding in both lanes blocking people from passing. It was awesome.

I fail to see how their failure to plan constitutes an emergency on my part.

Even if they needed to get to the hospital ASAP... without flashing lights they have NO right to speed past a line of stopped/slow moving cars. That's dangerous and selfish.

Okay listen.
There is a lot of confusion about this.
If someone is trying to merge as illustrated above, yes... that is an asshole move.

BUT,

...in situations where lanes merge, (lanes of the same road, not a highway entrance or exit,) it is proper to fill up both lanes. Many of you simply do not get this, and I know why. It's because you view all instances of merging the same, when they are not. The reason they have the lane merge where is does, and not a few hundred feet earlier up the road, is because traffic will line up too far if everyone merges too early. I'll see a line of people that merged too early, then they look at the guy driving down the empty lane to merge further down as an asshole, BUT THEY ARE WRONG. The merger is doing it exactly right. It's really simple, too. The cars to the left of you and ahead of you have the right of way. If you're in the right lane, look at the car to your immediate left and possibly a bit ahead of you -- that is the car to try to get behind. If you're in the left lane, look at the car to your immediate right and possibly a bit behind you -- that is the car to try to get in front of.

I feel strongly about this and will now draw a picture to illustrate.

Yeah...I hate those people. They'll pass up several perfectly good spots to merge and then cause a chain reaction of people hitting their brakes at the very end of the line that resonates with every vehicle that goes through that spot for the next several minutes.

There is a bottleneck there and everybody has to get through it. It would go a lot better if they would be smooth and keep the traffic flowing whenever possible.

Last night: At the stop light on the corner of Chapel Hill and Maynard. I get the green light, along with about 10 other cars, to cross Chapel Hill. We all make it about halfway through the intersection when some guy decides that he can go during his red light. He ended up blocking my lane and forcing me to swerve and almost hit the guy who is in the lane to the left of me. The whole time I was laying on my horn going WTF WTF! Apparently, he thought it was his turn to go even though he had a RED LIGHT and began laying on his horn and continued to try and move forward as I passed by the front of his car. Finally, after about four cars had passed he he realized that it was -obviously- not his turn to go and backed up.

FUCK CARY DRIVERS. THEY ALL HAVE THEIR HEADS SHOVED SNUGLY UP THEIR ASSES.

Years ago, some traffic engineer did a study wrote a paper saying how it's faster if people do fill up both lanes before the merge. But he qualified it as a highway scenario, with cars traveling at or near free flow velocity, less than such and such density, stuff like that.

If there's enough cars on the road that traffic has slowed and cars are queued up through the lane drop, lane weaseling is an asshole move.

If some one is passing you to your right, you need to speed up or move further to the right I think. People maybe passing to the right anticipating that a car further up on the left is traveling at a slower speed then them. I have to use the far right lane all the time to pass because of jackasses not using the left lane for passing. I honestly want to rip someones fucken head off when they are in the left lane traveling the same speed as the person beside them. I become so infuriated I could kill a puppy or punch a baby every time someone is blocking me in this manor. It is illegal and in several European countries and people should receive tickets for it here as well.

Couldn't' agree more. Passing lane obstruction kills. Seriously. People die because of losers going slow in the passing lane -- which is why it's illegal to do so many places. There needs to be more of these "left lane laws". For some reason NC is backwards, enforcing laws against tailgating -- which, while dangerous, is just a symptom of passing lane obstruction.

^^
Wait, what?
If "cars are queued up through the lane drop", what lane is open for "lane weaseling"?
I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

Anyway, here's my drawing:

If I ever come to a 4 way intersection on I-40 I'll keep that in mind.

I see what you're saying in regards to normal street traffic though. There are certainly times on Western Blvd for example when I know I need to be in the right lane to make it onto the beltline, but I can't stomach sitting in traffic backed up halfway to Ten Ten when all the other lanes are open. Might as well get as many people through the light as possible and worry about merging later.

Passing as many cars as possible and waiting until the last second to merge is still a dickhead move though.

You and me both. I LOVE it when people cooperate with this, and when I see semis doing it. BUT, coming home through WV last month, I tried this (in a construction zone, with signage posted MILES ahead), and the dude behind me promptly scooted over, moved up beside me, and kept me from getting back in my previous spot. Ok, fine, dude. I'll chill here in the closing lane, half a car length ahead of you, and EVERYONE is going to try to get in front of you, instead of behind you, like if you'd cooperated. If I wanted to be skipping car lengths, I'd have zoomed ahead of everyone instead of just chilling.

Quote :

Which is why, since I drive a normal-sized car, I only do this in places where there really is no place for you to go; i.e., against jersey barriers, narrow shoulders (if you have such a tiny penis that you need to go off the road to gain two car lengths, you're fucking nuts and are going to kill yourself soon enough anyhow).

It doesn't have to be a 4-way intersection. If traffic backs up on a highway to an entrance/exit, that's a problem -- the lanes need to be filled in, that's why they're there. You're especially right about Western. I came up with a decent solution to that intersection, but it's not perfect. (I may have to draw it.... )

Passing as many cars as possible and waiting until the last second to merge is NOT a dickhead move in this type of scenario -- the lane is open, therefore use it. Period. Regardless of what happens, the merge occurs somewhere, and you might as well fill up the road -- what's the point of having road that no one's supposed to drive on? Every foot of lane all the way up to where it merges into an adjacent lane should be used by traffic.

Quote :

What are you talking about?
Is tailgating not dangerous? Do people not die in wrecks caused by crowded highways?
Is the sky not blue? Do I have to prove that, too? (Fuck off.)

Bullshit.

When you wait til your lane has begun to narrow to try and get over, you have waited too long.

Happy medium: find it, and use it. In the case of merging, this means taking the fucking openings you have available - not using the full length of the lane just because it's there.

I already mentioned the chain reaction caused by all these people braking when there were plenty of slots that they could have successfully merged into without the need for anyone else to stop and let them in.

You say you should use the lanes to capacity, yet you ignore the fact that the lane which continues beyond the bottleneck is not being used to capacity.

NO. You are wrong. It's one thing to pass too many cars, so that everyone will have to slow down, but if there's open road and traffic is already slowed, or if it traffic is light enough that it can be done fast, you're supposed to use the open lane.

Before you respond, think about it. What I'm saying will 100% of the time result in everyone merging efficiently and not having any undue slowing. Yes, there are some situations where people fuck it up, but generally, it is made worse by people like you that assume that 100% of the time, everyone should merge right away, leaving an empty lane and pushing back traffic behind you (which, by the way, slows things down for them, but you wouldn't know that would you? -- you're further down the road and don't care if you make things worse for them. You just want to exercise your misguided vigilantism, you fucking dangerous fuck.)

Your own drawing shows 4 cars in the left lane effectively finding an open slot and slipping into it which is exactly what I've been advocating. The reality is that all four of those cars would be piled up at the very end and demanding to be let in front of the #1 car in the right lane.

Traffic thick and slowed a bit, but moving, because everyone merged earlier rather than later

>>>>>

Traffic all of a sudden stopped, or almost completely stopped, because Douche McNuggertson waited until AFTER the last possible second to attempt to merge, and in order to stay on the road, forces himself into Someone Else's lane, making Someone Else slam on their brakes to avoid hitting the obstacle that he calls his car.

Then you're not getting what I'm saying. I may not be saying it well, as there are many subtleties. Whatever way is most efficient is clearly not everyone piling into one or both lanes, but to weave together, taking turns. That's what I'm saying. I'm not saying everyone will easily do it once they read my post -- I'm certainly not solving any practical problems, I'm just saying what could work.

Quote :
"The reality is that all four of those cars would be piled up at the very end and demanding to be let in front of the #1 car in the right lane."

That's only if you assume people can't learn the right way to do it, or if you simply don't trust people -- and you may have a point. However, I view that as giving up -- as disallowing the possibility that we can get it right. Perhaps it should start in school, so children could get early practice merging. But I get what you're saying -- I quite often see the stupidity of people at 4-way and 3-way stops. It's like they're 4 years old and completely incapable of the concept of taking turns.

Either way, we shouldn't just view it 100% this or that.
...And we shouldn't be dickhead vigilantes like ambrosia and slingblade.

So you freely agree that theory and practice don't align as nicely as they should.

And get upset at people who take action at bringing the two a little closer.
