Just posting here because this show is pretty great. I've watched it every week since S1 started re-airing last July.

I have the complete series on DVD and will probably never watch it again, not because its not a great show, but because nothing is worth 60 hours of my life twice. Let me know if anyone wants to borrow or buy it.

After 60 straight weeks, the final episode of the series airs tonight. So far, its been excellent! It also means I've been in my house 60 weeks, since I moved in that same weekend.

Anyone else attend the David Simon lecture last night on the UNC campus? It was open to the public. Pretty fucking cool.

how about a synopsis for those that did not?

Well, the title of the lecture was "The Turn of the American Century: The Triumph of Capital over Labor," if that gives you an idea. He didn't talk much about The Wire specifically, but he definitely talked about the things The Wire was about--the corruption of systems, the decline of the working class, how so often these days it's all about juking the stats instead of making real progress.I was surprised by just how liberal Simon was; I didn't know that going on. He's also a pretty staunch believer in socialism, apparently, and thinks wall street cares only about profit. The tone of his lecture wasn't hoity-toity though; he cursed often and the way he spoke generally had the feel of someone just talking to you in a bar (except it was someone who was clearly very intelligent and strong-minded in their opinions). He was also strikingly cynical and admitted such often. He apparently believes that America's heyday was in the 50's and that its days as an international superpower are winding down, for a number of reasons (thus, "The Turn of the American Century"). He loves FDR and the New Deal; he hates Ronald Reagan, Reaganomics, and the trickle-down theory. He made a lot of really interesting points and made several references to events and/or characters in The Wire, and he told a killer anecdote about how Felicia Person (who plays Snoop) was arrested after The Wire: she loaned a friend $30 once, and when she went up to that friend to ask for "the 30," the police (who had a wiretap somewhere besides Snoop's phone) assumed she was trying to buy heroin. Since wiretap cases take forever, she apparently will have to wait about 2 years before it goes to court; in the meantime, she either has to pay $400 a month for a metal bracelet or else she has to wait for court in prison, where any potential career she might have will die and she won't be able to make a living if/when she's found innocent. She took her only option and has to pay for the bracelet, but of course, she won't get that money back if she's found innocent. And then when he was taking questions, an Asian kid asked when The Wire was coming out on Blu-Ray. According to Simon, that's never happening because The Wire was not shot in HD (he said that give it a more documentarian feel).
