"I'd have to see what other OF you have on your team but at face value I don't like it. Mauer is an offensive force at a value position and I think Chipper has a huge year knowing it's Cox's last.

Hamels should improve after his Verducci effect season, but it's always a risk in that ballpark and he is still having trouble leaving his pitches up in the Spring (not that the Spring really matters but that was a huge issue for him last year).
"

My other OFs are pretty thin. I tried to focus on getting a good C, 2B, SS, and 3B as those positions can be harder to find good hitters than in the OF. I took Miguel Montero C for the D-backs (I think that is his name) late in the draft because of Mauer being an injury risk. He'll be my primary C now. He was decent last year.

My other OFs are Andre Ethier, Alfonso Soriano, and Carlos Beltran. I had Chipper and Billy Butler as Util players. My 2B is Kinsler, SS is Andrus (not who I wanted, but dudes overdrafted at SS so I waited til late to take Elvis), 3B is Zimmerman, 1B is Reynolds.

12 team league H2H with standard 5X5 scoring so I was focusing heavily on runs scored, RBIs, and SBs. Basically punting BA (Kinsler, Soriano, and Reynolds = blah) and hoping for enough HRs. I should win pitching stats each week too.

^Kinsler just had a bad season last year and I think he should be back to at least .280 or maybe even .300

5x5 roto league with 12 teams... yes I know my pitching sucks but this was my first auction draft so I had a feeling I'd have some issues this year. I fucked up not getting a decent 1B and getting Smoak in the very last pick was just to be stupid because my brother went to South Carolina. I think I'll probably drop Correja for decent middle reliever before the season starts too.

I just feel like we have way too many positions

FYI, Reyes was just cleared and will be back in camp tomorrow. Still might make it for opening day but more realistically he'll be back in the starting lineup the second week of the year.

I give:

A-Rod
Stephen Drew
Matt Garza

I get:

David Wright
Jose Reyes
Fausto Carmona

^ I do not like it for you. Wright is great, but A-Rod does everything Wright does with a lot more power. Reyes is a big question mark now and Carmona is too. Do not take that trade in my opinion unless you truly believe Reyes and Wright are going to put up 07-08 numbers.

I accidentally selected Jeter instead of CC. Problem is I had just selected Tulo. Stuck with Billy Butler at 1B, so would I be wise to trade Jeter for Morneau (moving Butler to 1 of the 2 util spots) & Rafael Soriano or could I do better?

^I wouldn't use the word "stuck" with Billy Butler as I believe he was second in the MLB in doubles last year. Also I don't know anyone in their right mind that would trade Morneau for Jeter's old ass.

I need help selecting my outfield/utility players (3 OF, 1 U). Here's who I have to choose from:

J. Hamilton (OF/U)
C. Quentin (OF/U)
M. Bourn (OF/U)
D. Ortiz (1B/U)
-----------------
V. Wells (OF/U)
N. Swisher (1B/OF/U)
M. Cameron (OF/U)

the top four are the one's i'm considering starting, let me know if you have a different opinion (I have Morneau at 1B so Ortiz and Swisher would obviously not get the start there)

thats probably who I would run to start the season

Who should I start in my Utility spot?

Adrian Beltre
----
Alexei Ramirez
Raul Ibanez

Basically Ibanez had a bad spring (4/40) and Ramirez is batting 9th for now...Beltre is batting 6th for Boston...Ibanez might turn it around but he's batting 7th for Philly this year

i got an offer:
i receive prince fielder
i trade mark teixeira

part of me thinks it's a trade up, but it wouldn't be huge step up, and maybe an equal trade. however, this a keeper league, and prince is 4 years younger.

the guy offering is a yankees homer, so i could probably make it a 2-for-2 swap and get another piece to upgrade. that's pure speculation right now though.

what to do?

^Fielder has the higher upside in my opinion. You would get more homers out of Fielder but probably a higher average out of Tex so it really depends on what you need.

^^^I would probably stick with Ibanez for now, I don't know that I trust any of them but he's got the better track record

^^ definitely take that trade, if you can get more, even better, but as it is, you're benefiting already. Teixeira was probably on HGH and roids and all sorts of shit anyways, so just take the natural 40+ HR hitter and you should be great, especially for a couple years to come in a keeper.

just had a draft with some friends (including NyM410 , ncstatetke , saps852 and a few others from tww). Its an 8 team, head-to-head league, so we all have pretty good teams. Let me know how you think I did (strengths, weaknesses, way to improve, etc.), I had the third pick and it was a typical snake draft:

C - Joe Mauer
1B - Mark Reynolds
2B - Robinson Cano
3B - Alex Rodriguez
SS - Stephen Drew
OF - Grady Sizemore
OF - BJ Upton
OF - Josh Hamilton
Util - Manny Ramirez
Util - Carlos Pena
SP - Zack Greinke
SP - Yovani Gallardo
RP - Jonathan Broxton
RP - Francisco Rodriguez
P - Justin Verlander
P - Jake Peavy
P - Trevor Hoffman
P - Jorge De La Posa

BN - Jason Heyward
BN - Michael Young
BN - Alfonso Soriano
BN - Ian Desmond
BN - Stephen Strasburg

I am in love with my team, I wish we had more starting positions so I wont have to make the tough decision on who to start and who to bench among my hitters

yeah, based on spring training I'm pretty high on Stephen Drew, Fausto Carmona, Jorge De La Rosa, Robinson Cano, BJ Upton, Ricky Nolasco, Jason Heyward, Ian Desmond (Nats rookie SS/2B) and a few other players

I picked up Michael Young in the 17th round, which is crazy. Any thoughts on the team? The most glaring weakness that I can see is my lack of speed/stolen bases.

Also, Strasburg isnt considered to be on the DL, he is labelled as NA, so I cant put him on the DL and use his roster spot for someone who will actually be playing to start the year. Is it worth wasting a roster spot on him, or should I gamble on dropping him and trying to pick him back up when he gets called up from the minors?

Not sure what to make of this team. Haren was actually the 6th pitcher taken, and was 16th overall. My computer kept giving me issues, so my 4th and 5th round picks were auto. I wanted someone instead of Markakis, but it is what it is. I see some potential, but there are a couple of spots I'd like to improve on.

Yeah, I was thinking about Geinke in round 2, and Haren in 3 or 4 originally, but I got both. Pitching has a little more importance in this league than most I've seen, so people got a lot early. I got my computer issues taken care of, in time to see Morales, Ichiro and Reyes up there. I do think a few of the guys I got were available later than I expected, such as the 3 mentioned above. I think I have a good team, but I don't know that I have the best team in the league.

I'm doing fantasy baseball for the first time. I picked my players using some combination of a fancy statistics program that I wrote, whether they're near the top of the rankings, and my brother telling me if they're hurt.

Most of my players seem pretty respectable and have high % owned rates, but I'm getting murdered in virtually every category (head to head). Does anybody have a quick explanation or advice? Bad luck? Need to rotate players off the bench more to get more playing time?

^haha, exactly. The program you wrote probably took into account statistics that were gathered over an entire season, not one week.

If theres anything I've learned about fantasy baseball its that players tend to be very streaky, and its a good idea to play the hot hand - but stick with your big guns. Dont go dropping Josh Hamilton for Edgar Renteria just cause Josh doesnt have a hit yet and Edgar is lighting it up. If you have a hot hitter on your bench (i.e. Garrett Jones) then sure, bench your stud for a game or two while the hot hitter plays his streak out - but dont drop your studs unless they:

a) have a season-ending injury
b) are benched for a prolonged period of time by their coach (i.e. keep your eye on Corey Hart)
c) dont produce halfway respectable numbers at all through the all-star break
d) you have a stud who isnt producing, but there is a stud on the waiver wire that was dropped by another manager and is starting to outproduce your player

*by studs I mean players that are considered everyday starters at a certain position (i.e. Robinson Cano) and arent everyday bench players for your team (i.e. Josh Willingham, Rajai Davis)

^ too much "stud" usage in that post

I was reading some fantasy chat the other day - the dude never keeps bench hitters and never keeps a backup catcher and just keeps a bunch of extra pitchers. That would be brutal to me... if you had a guy like Hamilton that was in a slump that you definitely didn't want to drop but you had nobody to replace him with. I can't believe that's a successful strategy either but I guess he has to be the fantasy "expert" on ESPN for a reason, right?

there's merit to having a stable of pitchers, and just every day players for your hitters

idk why you'd ever keep a backup catcher

that's a waste of a roster spot

My strategy is usually to try and keep just one bench hitter. Usually a guy like DeRosa that is eligible at multiple positions in case of injury to another player or to fill in on days off. I like having a stable of pitchers because pitching is so unpredictable.

I'll pick up and drop so-so pitchers a lot depending on their recent starts (guys like Washburn or Contreas for example - streaky as hell). Plus I try and load up on closers and bad ass setup guys to help my K and ERA results to cover for some of the so-so pitchers. I've had success with this strategy in the past.

And yeah having a backup catcher is about as worthless as tits on a nun. Unless for some reason you drafted a combo of McCann/Mauer/V-mart and you can use one in your Util position.

My team is wrecked with injuries right now:

Huston Street - should have never drafted his ass
Ian Kinsler - the dreaded final week of spring training injury
Beltran - knew he'd start the year on the DL, but drafted him because it was a steal late in the draft.
Chipper - came back last night, but not 100% so I don't want to play him yet
Miguel Montero - had a great first week, now on the DL. Had to drop him because he's not worth stashing on the bench for 2+ weeks. Picked up fucking I-Rod as a fill-in.
Andre Ethier - out for the last few games with some sort of injury...

Needless to say I did not win my first week in my H2H league.

if its Chris Young the hitter, he is trying to sell while he is hot, because he'll be lucky to bat .260 this year
