I thought part of the rationale was that the current OT rules for regular season inherently make the game end quicker than the new playoff rules, since a field goal would end the game. I thought the league wanted to minimize the length of regular season OT games for TV scheduling purposes, but in the playoffs its different.

Yeah god forbid American Dad gets delayed for 10 minutes for a thrilling overtime finish
3/23/2010 4:04:31 PM
I think their reasoning is more like, god forbid we miss the kickoff of the 4:15 game because Donovan McNabb is a retard in the 1 o'clock game
3/23/2010 4:07:30 PM
Then they should just declare the winner of the game to be the winner of the coin toss. They could have more time for commercials!

do the opposite of college. get rid of offense/defense and just alternate kickoffs until a TD is scored. -Kickoff from the 25-Kickoff must travel 50 yards-Kickoff out of bounds is 5-yard penalty + rekick-If the team that gets the ball first scores on their return, the other team gets a chance.-After 2 kickoffs per team, if neither team has scored, remove a player from each team to make it 10 on 10. If necessary, remove another player after each pair of kickoffs, until only the Kicker and Kick Returner are left. Just kidding.

Safety also ends the game instantlyWould be a lot easier to just go with my "First to 5" proposal
3/23/2010 5:01:23 PM
why in the fuck would you pick '5' instead of 6

you're retardedhey, lets reward teams for intentionally taking safeties!lets re-write the rules to give advantages to teams who cant move the ball!]

Only the exact opposite of thatHi, my name is James and I can't read

the only reason people wanted the OT rule changed in the first place is because the team that wins the coin toss wins the game 60% of the time60/40 is a big enough reason to change the OT, according to the NFL ownersyour proposed solution involves something that probably happens in 1% of games
3/23/2010 5:10:56 PM
Doesn't matter if it happens .01% of the times, it will still happenWhy not nip it in the bud before it does
3/23/2010 5:13:00 PM
too late for thatbtw, the system they implemented isn't a strict "first to X" systemits 1st to 7, IF you win the coin toss and score a touchdownits 1st to 3, IF you win the coin toss, kick a FG, then stop the other team on 4th downits then sudden death, IF you win the toss, kick a FG and give up a FG
3/23/2010 5:15:38 PM
Because it won't effect any games where a safety doesn't occur. A touchdown or two field goals will both give a team a win. There is no combination of scores that doesn't involve a safety that can result in 5 points. Thus, making it 5 instead of 6 changes absolutely nothing about the game except for the fact that a safety and a field goal can win the game for you, instead of getting a field goal and safety and then still having to score a field goal or a touchdown to win. All non-safety outcomes remain the same.
3/23/2010 5:16:25 PM
also, a safety in overtime now (playoffs) will immediately end the gamehttp://twitter.com/LATimesfarmer/status/10941237260]

^ They should make it so the game is over when the ensuing possession ends if a FG is scored on the first drive. Regardless, the game should end on a safety, but the team with the higher score would still win the game.
3/23/2010 10:50:14 PM
The college setup would have been so much fucking easier.
3/23/2010 11:09:48 PM
Just passed a rule making it like college where the play is over when the ball carrier's helmet gets knocked offNo more plays likehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMAaZYD3meE
3/24/2010 3:45:27 PM
To be fair, the guy running him down really obviously hesitated before going to tackle a guy with no helmet on. There was an extra 5-10 yards on that just because he didn't want to kill Witten.
3/24/2010 3:56:35 PM
Aparently also, if the team that kicks off first recovers an onside kick, it starts sudden death. If I were a coach I would... Win the coin toss and choose to kick. Try onside kick. If succesful, YAY we will win! If not succesful, Oh well, no harm done and I'll have 4 downs instead of 3 on offense if we hold them to a FG.[Edited on March 24, 2010 at 5:01 PM. Reason : ]
3/24/2010 5:00:50 PM
What if they kept sudden death overtime just the way it is, but the team that had the lead in regulation before the game was tied gets the ball first in overtime. that would make teams go for the win (via td over fg or going for 2) at the end of regulation. it would also keep games shorter (i.e. less injuries etc..) which is most peoples complaints against just playing an extra quarter.
3/24/2010 5:16:52 PM
goddamn, what's so fucking hard about keeping it the same during the regular seasonand in the playoffs, just add another quarter. i can see potential added time that has to be played being a detriment during reg season from a players health perspective, but in the playoffs that would be fucking epic.
3/24/2010 5:22:37 PM
3/24/2010 5:33:02 PM
Yeah but apparently they had a "chance" to have possession, so you could still win by doing thisRead it on PFT, not sure of its validity

I was only discrediting it because it was posted by a woman.
