I love me some eastern bbq. Still, when I went on my NC bbq roadtrip, the best bbq I had west of chapel hill was Stameys.

I find mom-and-pop places make better BBQ than corporate chains.

^that's pretty much a given...I mean while I'll eat smithfields bbq if I had to pick between smithfields or the local resturant I'd pick the local one any time...especially if it's Wilburs or Little Pigs

For a couple summers me family had gone to a timeshare-esque resort in the mountains of West Virginia--up there they don't realize that NC is split over BBQ (I.E., people haven't been educated enough), they adore Eastern NC BBQ and were actually pretty AMAZING at making it.

to be honest, western NC bbq can be good if prepared right... but it will never be superb like eastern nc bbq.

I have found that it is mostly western style until you get to the triangle area. You will find some unsided places, there is a place in Reidsville called Short Sugar's that does whole hog but the sauce they use is neither. It is more like eastern but they add brown sugar which gives it a unique taste (it has always been meh to me). There are also places like Prissy Polly's in Kernersville which serve both styles and they are both delicious. When you get really far west you will also find that places mince the bbq which sort of adds a 3rd style. Where I grew up (north of greensboro) there is a place called Fuzzy's that minces the bbq and use a western style sauce. They also do bbq chicken the same way (I assume they smoke it) where it is minced and it is awesome.

Sadly I cannot take credit for that gem.

My first BBQ was eastern style (Parkers, greenville) and I Love their slaw,
but you know I really like the western stuff too. It's kind of like when I go to the western part of the state it's a nice change. When in Rome and all that shit.

Allen and Son is some of the best I've ever had and it's on the other side of Chapel Hell, and it's eastern style. Bullocks in Durham isn't bad either...just sayin'...

Holy crap that mayo based white bbq sauce they have here in Alabama is disgusting. Regardless of whether you prefer Eastern or Lexington style NC BBQ, NEVER TRY ALABAMA BBQ.

That being said, do you guys think Bear Grylls enjoys Eastern or Lexington style? What about Les Stroud?

I didn't even know there was another type of BBQ in NC till earlier this year when I was watching the Food Network and saw Bobby Flay came to Raleigh for "Throwdown".

To this day, I'm not even sure I've ever had "Western" BBQ, and I've been an NC native my entire life. Apparently I'm not missing much.... apparently.

Also,

probably wouldn't be able to, it is in advanced decay. The orange stuff on the ground in the foreground? that is dried and hardened fat that has a mayonaise like consistancy.... you really cannot even see the gross stuff with this shitty picture.

i'm in Memphis. went to the most recommended place from the 3 separate individuals who have lived here from the airport bar and the plane trip. ribs were tough as leather. i complained and they gave me a bottle of their rub... i wasn't looking for a handout but as a competition bbq novice, i offered my opinion. they admitted that they are famous for their rub and their high rate of tourists that is the only thing they focus on. Rendezvous.
