But nobody is going to give up a first and third for sproles. Nobody would even give up a first. And if you sign him to just a first you don't have to pay as much.Obviously I don't really care since it's not my money and there's no cap to worry about, I just think it was a dumb decision.
3/5/2010 12:27:46 PM
Eh...somebody might part with a 1st round pick for Sproles (I'm assuming these are 2011 picks, correct??). The draft next year isn't suppose to be as strong. A team like New England who has always seemed to do their damage in the later rounds would love someone like Sproles who could fill their Kevin Faulk spot (mother fucker is old) and they also wouldn't have to face him in the playoffs anymore. I could definitely see a lot of teams parting with a 2nd round pick for Sproles.I almost see it as the Chargers saying..."we really want to keep Sproles...but if we lose him, then we'll be getting much more in return."

Chargers are going to trade Charlie Whitehurst to Seahawks who will pay him 4mil/year to be a backup and he's never thrown a regular season pass, good for him i guess
3/17/2010 9:46:47 PM
I hope they find a decent QB in a later round to groom as a backup. Volek won't be around forever.Definitely like moving up in the 2nd round though.
3/17/2010 10:37:54 PM
i think voleck is a great QB.
3/19/2010 10:21:35 PM
as someone who roots for the chargers only as a p riv fan, i hope aj smith trades volek to the skins for rex grossman
3/20/2010 12:56:02 AM
Yeah I think Volek is one of the best backup QBs in the NFL, after probably Kolb, maybe one or two others but I really can't think of them.Whitehurst looked pretty bad in preseason, don't know what Seattle sees in him.
3/20/2010 1:37:42 AM
bears, cowboys, saints, and san fran in the preseason. should set the tone IMO

they could get 14 wins out of that if they draft an okay back (or use the ones they have well).

4/22/2010 10:48:58 PM
lol @ Denver. So now they have Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, and Tebow?
4/22/2010 10:50:11 PM
Chargers clinched the AFC West last night
4/23/2010 12:36:53 PM
they did over pay and reach on that Mathews pick thou. There were way too many strong bruiser backs that could have been had. I know we essentially got him for Charlie Whitehurst, so it's not as hard to swallow. But no way was that a #12 worthy pick.
4/23/2010 2:29:38 PM
Meh...I think the gamble of possibly missing was enough to make the move. Apparently (I'm sure it's bullshit...I think teams throw out shit like "we're interested in Mathews" just so other teams waste draft picks trading up to get him) other teams really like him in the middle of the draft. You have to look at the other backs in the draft. I think Spiller and Mathews are the most complete backs. Best is a little smaller and had a lot of injury issues last year. I like Toby Gerhart...but that's still a risk that he's going to be a good NFL running back. If the Chargers are looking for an everydown "feature" back...then I think Mathews was their best option. As long as they didn't give up too much (which they didn't really...they gave up a little, but I think it was worth the risk), then I think it was a good move just to make sure they didn't miss out on him. They still have a chance to trade some more picks/players and get into the second round and get a good DT...but they can still pick up some quality guys in the later rounds. Remember their defense wasn't THAT BAD last year. It just started off real shitty. It ended pretty strong. And those young guys will have some experience under their belt and hopefully Merriman can come back healthy. You can always say that they could have gotten him later in the round...but if Mathew had been picked up before the Chargers could get him, then they probably would have been kicking themselves for missing out on their future RB. They were absolutely ABYSMAL in their running game last year. They had to make a big move for the position in their draft this year, and they did.
4/23/2010 2:41:54 PM
^I agree that Mathews was the #1 guy they needed the most in the draft. He was the guy I was hoping they would get at 28, but when CJ Spiller was drafted so high, I got nervous; so, the move was probably necessary. But they did give up a ton. However, like you said, they still have some opportunities to pick a "diamond-in-the-rough" DT late in the draft. Plus, the Chargers have done a good job in the last 10 or so years developing no-name guys into quality players on defense. However, the chances of getting a much-needed quality DT or CB now or much slimmer than they were before the trade. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the trade.Also--I'm sorry I started that other thread. I didn't realize that would make so many people angry...
4/23/2010 3:16:38 PM
I personally think they made the right move. I agree that they got nervous when Spiller was already off the board. As a chargers fan, I think it's a win.
4/23/2010 3:28:07 PM
haha. acting like you just pluck any DT late in the draft and he'll come in and be servicable. I think its fairly safe to say RB is the easiest position to have immediate success in the NFL. Fail by the Chargers giving up so much.
4/23/2010 3:35:40 PM
^A DT picked late in the draft has a better chance of succeeding than an RB taken late in the draft.
4/23/2010 3:41:04 PM
4/23/2010 4:14:42 PM
4/23/2010 4:15:30 PM
^^IF they get a quality DT, then it will be a great draft for the Chargers. But that's a pretty big if.
4/23/2010 4:32:20 PM
Sorry to double post here, but the Chargers just made their 4th round pick and they drafted a crappy safety. They STILL haven't drafted a DT, even though there were two decent ones on the board in Al Woods and Cam Thomas. What is AJ Smith thinking? Who is going to start at DT next year, Ian Scott? Ryon Bingham?
4/24/2010 10:54:16 AM
Got that DT from UNC
4/24/2010 12:51:22 PM
Couldn't be happier with Cam Thomas. I completely take back my previous comment. Several mock drafts had the Chargers taking Cam Thomas with their initial 2nd round pick (the one they traded away in the Mathews deal). I am frankly shocked that Thomas fell all the way to the fifth round, when basically all draft projections/predictions had him going in the 2nd-3rd round. Makes me wonder if something is going on off the field with him, but AJ usually doesn't take those guys.Anyway, what a steal. To me, this pick (along with Mathews) makes this draft a success for the Chargers. I don't know about the safety and the ILB they got, though...Haven't heard great things. Only real hole left is at CB.
4/24/2010 12:59:58 PM
Cam Thomas is a fucking retard. that's why he slid.let's hope he's got retard strength.
4/24/2010 1:31:10 PM
Picked Crompton from Tennessee as the 3rd qb.
4/24/2010 1:36:03 PM
I like the safety pick. Been reading up on Stuckey. Sounds solid.Cam Thomas was a good pick-up that late as well. And Crompton...whatever. He should never see a snap that has any importance in his whole NFL career unless every QB ahead of him has a broken leg...maybe both.
4/24/2010 1:46:08 PM
Maybe the Chargers can milk some team for Charlie Whitehurst-type competition in a couple years.
4/24/2010 1:48:51 PM
phillip better watch his back

Just read from some Seattle beat writer that the Seahawks were definitely going to take Mathews at 14 after Spiller went at 9th. Their plan was to draft an OT with the 6th pick (which they did in Russell Okung) to solidify their O-line and then take an RB with the 14th pick. I kept hearing that SD traded up because they were hearing rumblings that Mathews would go earlier, but nice to know the specifics. I thought the only threat were the Texans at 20. This considered, along with the fact that Cam Thomas was projected to go in the 2nd-3rd round, I think it was a pretty damn good draft. Also, to the poster who said Cam Thomas is a retard: probably, but Warren Sapp wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, either. Like you said, retard strength.
