coachella looks much more solid than this.

camping in manchester > hoteling in chicago

for me.

I'm a little shocked by the headliners if that's what they are. Was not expecting DMB and KoL to fill those spots. I'll just likely be skipping them like I did with Pearl Jam and Phish.

But there's a solid 30+ acts I'm interested in seeing.

dont underestimate how fucking lame coachella is ran.

midnight curfews, no congregating in the camping areas, get maced for smoking, 20 minute sets by animal collective, etc etc.

btw, if bassnectar is super late night

dont fall on getting right and dancing right.

Yeah, music ending at midnight is a huge downer for me, but I have not heard of the no congregating or getting maced for smoking part. My buddy who went last year had nothing but good things to say about it, but he's not a real partier, so the lack of late night scene probably didn't make a difference to him. He did talk like the camping area was raging after the music ended though. Plz to elaborate on the mace for smoking bit...inside the concert areas I assume? Either way that sounds pretty ridiculous.

There are still enough bands that interest me (bonnaroo) that I know I could have a good time, but still plenty of wtf spots in the lineup....going to at least one "big" festival this spring / summer, will probably wait to see the All Good lineup before making any final decisions

^ I've been to Coachella a few times and never saw anything like that. I camped last year and was hard pressed to sleep at all at night with all the partying going on. They are allowing booze this year in the camping area as well.

And as far as smoking goes... my friend and I smoke like chimneys the entire time we are down there and have never once been hassled about it. There is nothing that indicates you can't smoke. And all the other hipsters there are standing around smoking parliament lights, so nobody cares. The only person who got maced last year was a naked guy claiming he was a wizard..... or maybe he was tazered.

Ok this prompted me to do a little googling, leading me to the video of said incident, which is hilarious yet disturbing at the same time.... an unhealthy amount of wizzard ass and balls involved but they just about tazed the dude unconscious. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/23/naked-wizard-tazered-at-c_n_190502.html - obviously nsfw

The cops basically plead with the guy for several minutes to put his wizzard hat and robe back on before putting on gloves for a sloppy takedown, followed by a tazer party.

Back to Bonaroo ==> I was pleased to see The Temper Trap, Jimmy Cliff, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Disco Biscuits, Lotus, LCD Soundsystem, and several others. I'm confident I would have a good time, despite the underwhelming headliners.

lineup is fucking terrible. don't get me wrong, i love Stevie Wonder, but you just know that's gonna be boring as shit. especially as one of the headliners

and fuck Kings of Leon

I am definitely a huge metal head but big festivals like this and some of the smaller shows with these types of acts are just a fun time, and appeal to me for several reasons. The energy (i know, I feel gay saying it too) is just fuckin great at these shows. I have been to some pretty lights, disco biscuits, lotus, sts9, etc. I only know these acts due to my friends and was extremely hesitant to even go to one of these shows, but once I did the fun level is undeniable. But with Baroness, ISIS, dead weather and some of the electronic/dance acts i mentioned above plus the comedy acts, coupled with the party favors I have a hard time seeing how anybody could have a bad time. The headliners don't appeal to me in the least, maybe Stevie Wonder just to say i have seen him, but i know for sure I am gonna have a great time once again.

gotcha, well i've never had a problem with the non-parliament smoking either. neither have i seen anyone hassled about it. it goes on in such large quantities, nobody does anything about it.

Bassnectar blows, hard. And seriously you left out of the quintessential late night acts at Roo this year, the Disco Biscuits and LCD Soundsystem. Amateurs.

with the exception of radiohead a few years back ive never gone to bonnaroo for the headliners. if you want a good experience at the main stage you have to push all day to be close enough to really even see whats going on at the main stage. I go for the experience, i try to see as many bands as possible and often times avoiding the headliners at least to an extent makes that easier. Late night at bonnaroo is infinitely more entertaining than the headliners ever are anyway, with only a few exceptions i can think of over the years.

every year i've gone i've skipped at least one headliner

at worst, even if you're not into them use it as a time to get some rest on the hill prior to late night

for both flaming lips and nin late night which sets, i've chilled during the what headliner, then moseyed over about an hour before, got a prime spot at which, and just sat and chilled until that set. three people deep for flaming lips and two people deep for nine inch nails was worth missing part of the police's mediocre (and super short) set and part of springsteen.

For the past 3 years they have gated off a front section at What stage, which people can line up for.

Some crazy people line up all day for Pearl Jam and such.

But I got into the section midway through bruce's set last year and was fairly close with lots of room.

[Edited on February 13, 2010 at 12:11 AM. Reason : they clear the section out after each act.]
