Had to be done...

I was speaking from experience, the experience of a very embarrassing coaching search.
3/19/2010 8:58:42 PM
Tom Penders out at Houston.
3/22/2010 2:26:18 PM
^ surprising considering the late season run to the NCAAs.

3/22/2010 4:44:10 PM
Billy Donnovan turns down St Johns job.Not surprising, but what is surprising is that St Johns offered him $3 million per year!
3/23/2010 1:30:54 PM
St. John's is pulling some Lee Fowler shit by letting all these denials come out publicly. All the fags in the media are snickering at them trying to get a big name coach.St Johns AD needs to figure out how to approach big name candidates without leaks happening.[Edited on March 23, 2010 at 6:34 PM. I thought Cothron decommitted from State!!??
3/23/2010 7:22:30 PM
Hewett interviewing with St. Johns.
3/23/2010 9:54:29 PM
What is stupid is St. John's asked Donovan (and perhaps Pitino) to take a paycut.I think Hewitt to St. John's is pretty likely. GT's AD is not a fan of Hewitt or his contract (given by the previous AD), and Hewitt probably understands he is likely to get fired after a down season next year. I'm thinking if they resolve the large buyout at GT (perhaps GT tears up the contract and lets Hewitt walk away with no buyout), this could happen. Not too dissimilar to the Dave Odom situation.
3/23/2010 10:19:00 PM
NY Daily News is reporting it's all but done.I think Hewitt is a bad coach, but lord knows he can recruit and while Atlanta has elite talent, it's got nothing on New York City... should be interesting.
3/24/2010 9:39:01 PM
Rumor mill is buzzing about Hewitt to St. Johns and Tubby to GT...
3/24/2010 9:45:39 PM
^^ NYC is a poorer area than you'd think for recruiting. Pretty much anyone worth a damn to come out of there is a wing or a waterbug guard. No shooters, no true big men, etc. And most of those guys arent as good as theyre hyped b/c theyre the only thing NY has so they get talked up a lot (see: Born Ready). Also, GT has more in town pull than St Johns by far. Whenever NYC gets a legit ass recruit like Favors do you think he's staying in town for the small local school or peacing out in favor of UNC, Kansas, Kentucky?
3/24/2010 10:46:40 PM
If GT ends up with Tubby, then they just upgraded bigtime without even having to fire anyone.
3/24/2010 11:20:15 PM
^^Exactly. And what non-NYC kid is going to play there?
3/24/2010 11:21:53 PM
I mean, the idea that a NY school should be dominant is a good one - it just isn't going to work out as things are now. Since it's been about 60 years from the point shaving scandal you'd think one of the schools that killed their basketball program would be ready to try again but all you have right now is a busted St Johns school in a bad area and a bunch of low to mid majors. Now if NYU or CCNY decided they wanted legit ass D1 sports I bet the Big East would be all over it and they would be looking good in about 10 yearsUntil then, I wouldn't expect much. It's not like DePaul or Northwestern are running shit either
3/24/2010 11:43:05 PM
I hope GT doesn't get Tubby. On the other hand, Tubby is a great coach but can't recruit worth a damn. So I guess I should say if Tubby comes I hope Favors and Lawal both jump to the NBA.
3/25/2010 12:39:09 AM
They should probably go ahead and get that first contract now so they can get good money and miss the rookie pay cut that will surely happen whenever the new CBA takes over.[Edited on March 25, 2010 at 12:47 AM. Reason : that's pretty much true for any potential first rounders I guess]
3/25/2010 12:47:20 AM
You make fair points about NYC, but I do believe that when St. Johns is a good program they will be able to keep more of the talent that does come through. I am a sucker for the New York type of player even though they do tend to be overhyped -- I love the way a team like WVU plays and they are just littered with those NYC area players.I do think pound for pound, they have more of the type of point guard I like come out of there than any other single region though.
3/25/2010 8:42:33 AM
Looks like Hewitt is staying at GT:http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/hewitt-staying-at-georgia-techMike Brey might be out at ND because of a non-basketball issue. Auburn hired Tony Barbee from UTEP to replace Lebo. Also, OU is hemorrhaging players...talk about going down in flames, Capel really should have taken another job after last season.[Edited on March 25, 2010 at 3:14 PM. Reason : .]
3/25/2010 3:12:00 PM
I'm guessing no agreement was reached with GT on the buyout. Paul Hewitt has all the leverage, as he gets a $1.3 million salary into perpetuity under the terms of his contract unless GT buys him out to the tune of $6.5 million. Basically each year GT has the option of extending his contract for an additional year (keeping it a 6-year deal) or paying the full buyout. Now St. John's will undoubtedly turn to Seth Greenberg, who would have to swallow his pride if he has an interest in this job. Another name believed to be on their list (Pecora) was already snatched up by Fordham, and they risk losing McCaffery to Seton Hall. They are about to miss on all tier 1 and tier 2 candidates. They will likely have to get their coach from a mid major, and the best mid major prospects are all getting snatched up.[Edited on March 25, 2010 at 6:17 PM. Reason : .]

Brad Stevens is a better coach than they will end up with, but St. John's seems obsessed with getting someone plugged into the NYC AAU scene. Maybe they can hire an AAU coach.
3/25/2010 8:37:57 PM
St. Johns is now interviewing Al Skinner, their coaching search is a lesson in abject humiliation
3/26/2010 1:42:48 PM
sounds familiar
3/26/2010 1:56:25 PM
that is an unbelievable contract paul hewitt has if the quoted text above is correct.
3/26/2010 2:16:03 PM
He should have been anyway, but Brad Stevens is now OFFICIALLY the top young coaching prospect in the game...
3/27/2010 6:48:40 PM
hopefully there will be good coaches around when we need to get one, next

Just throwing this out there, but who was the last coach that didn't win at Butler? (similar to Xavier) And yes I know the other coaches didn't reach a Final Four.[Edited on March 28, 2010 at 2:42 AM. Reason : f]
3/28/2010 2:41:57 AM
Fran McCaffrey (Siena) is now the head coach at Iowa. Most people I've seen don't like this hire. Not a strong enough recruiter.Kevin Willard (Iona) is the new head coach at Seton Hall. I've heard nothing but good things about this hire. Apparently the New York Panthers AAU program guy LOVES Willard and he is well liked by all the NYC AAU crew...And for a snippet of what the college game has begun, like it or not, check this quote
3/28/2010 3:57:13 PM
that's pretty infuriating honestly. the recruiting process should include the coach, the player, and the parents. i'm guessing the "little people" is referring to handlers or other seedy characters
3/28/2010 4:00:51 PM
St. John's is now interviewing Steve Lavin, it's almost like they looked at our coaching search as a blueprint...next they're gonna go after John Beilein haha.
3/28/2010 11:35:20 PM
No way this happens, but http://www.sportingnews.com/college-basketball/article/2010-03-29/report-oregon-offer-tom-izzo-contract
3/29/2010 11:40:36 AM
I still don't think he leaves MSU
3/29/2010 1:10:04 PM
No way Izzo leaves.
3/29/2010 1:21:35 PM
big surprise, Izzo is happy at Michigan Statehttp://bustersports.com/blog/buster-blog/2010/03/29/tom-izzo-isnt-interested-in-oregon-job-/
3/29/2010 2:15:37 PM
^I think he ends up staying at Michigan State, but obviously he is going to say he isn't interested when his team is still playing in the tournament...Roy Williams didn't "give a damn" about North Carolina when KU was in the tournament a number of years ago.
3/29/2010 2:26:25 PM
UNC was his alma mater, North Carolina his home state, and UNC has as much or more basketball history as Kansas.Izzo was born in Michigan and has lived in Michigan his entire life.[Edited on March 29, 2010 at 3:02 PM. Reason : Plus Oregon isn't as high profile as MSU. They have 1 NCAA title, the first one]
3/29/2010 3:01:15 PM
3/29/2010 3:02:39 PM
^^yeah I know, I'm not arguing that Izzo is going to take the job...just pointing out that no coach is going to say they are interested in another job DURING an NCAA tournament run.
3/29/2010 3:09:15 PM
also pointed out in the article is that he waited 12 years as an assistant to coach MSU, he has been head coach for 15 years but he has been there for 27 all together. It would take a very VERY special circumstance to get him to leave and PAC 10 Basketball ain't it.
3/29/2010 3:38:10 PM
Access to prototype Nike unis will seal the deal.
