What's the name of the bar near the Beaufort waterfront that has the ancient pool table and the awesome NC clam chowder?

Brevard

I'll throw in another vote for Southport.
1/14/2010 10:25:12 PM
Agree with Hendersonville; also Ocracoke and Southern Pines.Gastonia isn't that interesting, but I grew up there so maybe I just don't notice.

Just move to New England where every town has a "green" with downtown built around it... even the cities. You'll find your happiness.

go get bbq in New Bern, Kinston, or Smithfield. All also have cool places to go around the town.

I like west jefferson's downtown. But that might be because it has the cheese factory.

Edenton is pretty nice. Its a good clip from Raleigh though, like 3.5-4 hrs. You could spend the night at a bed and breakfast or something...[Edited on January 15, 2010 at 6:17 PM. Reason : .]

Go to beaufort. Leave there early. Stop at swansboro, NC on the way back and visit Russell's and buy something. Walk around the little down and eat dinner there. Drive back and wreck your car because you've eaten too much food and gone into a diabetic coma. But yeah, Beaufort and/or Swansboro.[Edited on January 15, 2010 at 6:20 PM. Reason : swansboro is only good for a few hours though]
1/15/2010 6:20:10 PM
^^ i'd say both the fayetteville and wilmington downtown areas are relatively concentrated, with most points of interest in one walkable area - wasn't really taking into account sprawl or population[Edited on January 15, 2010 at 8:44 PM. Reason : perhaps wilmington is a bit of a stretch]
1/15/2010 8:42:30 PM
^^ yeah, forgot about swansboro. not that far from beaufort, either.downtown wilmington/wrightsville beach is nice, too, but not as "small town" as it sounds like he wants.

I second Black Mountain!

Just reading all these post, I didn't know that many of you guys knew where Beaufort was. When I was at State I would tell people where I was from and nobody had a clue about Harkers Island, much less Beaufort or Morehead City. Now I know where all you dingbatters come from...lol
1/16/2010 11:11:15 PM
Black Mountain is def. awesome. If you go, go to My Fathers Pizza. If you stay for a night or so, try staying in Montreat in a rental house. Go out to the Town Pump or the Watershed. Lexington is sometimes OK, but I guess I am thinking of the BBQ festival. Salisbury is neat as well, the Sportscasters Hall of Fame is there, and they have a few little diners and what not there.
1/17/2010 1:43:11 AM
Lexington (NC) isn't the greatest small-town downtown, but I kinda like it. They've got those life-sized fiberglass pigs everywhere that are fun to look at -- a nod to the awesome BBQ you can get down there. There's a couple of cool stores to check out too: The Candy Factory, Conrad & Hinkle Grocery, Lanier's Hardware, etc.

^What year was that? And let me guess we probably kicked your ass. When I was there, it always pissed off the other team that a bunch white boy hicks whipped everybodys ass in basketball
1/17/2010 10:13:29 PM
When the hell was this? I grew up in Smyrna and don't remember the HI teams being any better than any of the rest of the area teams. Of course they thought their shit didn't stink. Also, if they were so good how come none ever started on the ECHS team?

Southport would be a good day trip. Take the ferry, see the pirate museum, etc...
1/17/2010 11:07:55 PM
Southport is more than ideal for a day trip, especially in spring & fall when its not loaded with tourists: 2.5 hours from RaleighHistorical landmarks- Old Brunswick Town, Forts Caswell & Fisher, Maritime museums, etc.Waterside shopping Many excellent Pom n' Pop restaurants 30min ferry ride to Ft. Fisher & Carolina BeachPicnic/Park AreasWarm ocean temps (comparatively speaking) outside of Memorial-Labor DayClose interstate access and easy highway navigation - i40 to nc17s (or 133 thru Leland if you're good) left on nc87, left at Famous Subs & Pizza, go to the water.

What, Fuquay Varina can't get any love?!?! Come to the Quay; stop at Stick Boy Bakery for a morning treat, Cooley's for lunch, and Aviator for some locally brewed beer. And if you're really swanky, you can go to Cellar 101 and walk around the downtown Fuquay historic district
