The thing is you're both right. There have been cultures that have eaten a diet made up predominantly of meat and ones where grains made up the vast majority of their diet. And they are both healthier than the American diet. Obviously we're putting things into our body that our body doesn't know what to do with, and I'm willing to bet it's the preservatives and chemicals rather than rice vs chicken.

But there have been cultures that have based most of their caloric intake on fruits and vegetables, which most certainly have large amounts of fructose in them.I honestly believe the best diet is one that is minimally processed and well-balanced. You shouldn't eat a crapload of cookies just as you shouldn't be eating a crapload of fried chicken.

Yea, so I fucked up on that (I thought that was kind of high, anyway. I figured the site would say "uncooked" if it was uncooked). However, the point still stands that grains are not equal to fruit or vegetables in calories or carbs. The quinoa still has twice the carbs, over twice the calories, and a measly 10% more fiber than the apple. And hell, the apple is a conservative example. Broccoli is 63 calories for 180g. So quinoa has almost 3.5 times as many calories. And it has less fiber than broccoli!
1/16/2010 7:08:38 PM
I'm confused. Where are you getting the fiber info from? Because using the two sites you listed one serving of quinoa has 48% of your daily fiber and 1 apple has 15%. And the quinoa has a crapload of protein, iron, magnesium, etc.

You're making the same mistake I did and looking at the uncooked quinoa. I'm using the link provided by OEPII1:http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/cereal-grains-and-pasta/10352/2Concerning fiber, the cooked quinoa has 5g, 21% daily value. The apple (after converting to 185g) has 4.4g, 18% daily value. Broccoli has 6g, 24% daily value.

Among grains, quinoa is not as high in fiber as other common grains.Wheat, spelt, Kamut, barley, oats, and rye all have 1.5 to 2 times the fiber in quinoa. And beans and lentils have even more fiber, as well as double the protein of the amount found in grains.Yup, horrible foods to eat!

I know! I am so mad at myself for putting lentils in my soup at lunch. I would try to throw them up but it's too late! FUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKK.]

Lentils have a high GI and will make you F A T. Lentils, oats, barley, and quinoa is why America is FAT.Say goodbye to your body and career P.S. It is never too late to throw up...[Edited on January 17, 2010 at 7:13 PM. Reason : ]

I had a chili yesterday that included lentils. It was pretty good stuff. Except for the part where it made me morbidly obese

Yea. You can't cut out an entire food group like HFCS?!? That's silly.

without reading all the bs being postedI've started caring about reducing my fructose intake as well... because of the link posted. The lectures problem, from what I can tell, is NOT just with HFCS... it's with ALL sugar (the kinds with fructose in it... don't parse, we're talking about HFCS sucrose and types like it)...as a nation we have an abnormally high sugar diet... and basically half of refined sugar (sucrose, HFCS, and kinds like it) is fructoseand fructose is BAD FOR YOU... so you should do the most you can to reduce your sugar intake... and no... he makes a point about fruits... there is plenty of fiber to apparently help regulate fructose metabolism... or somethinganyways... there is every indication that fructose is very unhealthy for you and that the primary reason we are ALL (everyone... not just the fatties) gaining weight is because of this transfer to sugar calories in our diet[Edited on February 9, 2010 at 2:00 PM.
