I like how Campbell isn't an NFL caliber QB, but 3 guys who have never taken a snap in the NFL in their lives apparently are NFL caliber QBs

They could be troll. Campbell didn't even play that well at Auburn, he was just a game manager. That's all he is. Matt Moore>>>>Campbell could ever be. Why don't some of you ask a Redskins fan what they think of Campbell?

[Edited on January 9, 2010 at 3:07 AM. Reason : Campbell is a bottom 10 QB]

[Edited on January 9, 2010 at 3:09 AM. Reason : I guess you guys are so used to Delhomme sucking dick that any QB looks good]

You're just a Campbell hater

I'm not saying he's guaranteed success, but he is the best quarterback on the free agent market in the Panther's price range if he isn't retained in Washington.

^agreed. Campbell, Moore, Jake, and other QBs of their relative caliber won't be THE answer. The panthers have never needed much more than a game managing QB and that wont change this year.

If our D, O-line, and RBs perform like they did those last 4 games - we don't need a top caliber QB. But having two legitimate game managing QBs on the team could be seen as a strength if/when the initial starter gets hurt/pulls a Delhomme. Campbell and Moore should suffice unless the Panthers think Jake is still a legit game manager backup....

I'm more worried about shoring up the D-line than QB....

i think that John Beason got robbed a Pro Bowl invite this year. there's no way Patrick Willis had a better year. Also, any news on who we're hiring for assistant coaches?

umm?? patrick willis is damn good. he led the league in tackles this year (I think he did last year too) so he's definitely worthy of the pro bowl.

hired a new special teams coach and receivers coach. those are the only moves so far i think

I thought that this was a dead period anyways and you couldn't negotiate with players that are going into free agency. I could be wrong though.

I think this is another ploy by Julius and his agent to try and get him out Charlotte. I think the Panthers may call his bluff again.

he's not even stressing about the want to play for another team/ 3-4 defense stuff anymore so we could definetly sign him, it just depends if we can afford him or not, I'm not sure what we could gain right now with the money if we don't sign him anyway

he wants to be the highest paid defensive player in the league. The problem is for every Minnesota or Arizona game there are 5 games where he is a non factor.

but you cant sink ~15% into a player who has stability of performance issues.

i mean, if he was a jerry rice type player, where every week you knew you were going to get the full effort and great performance, it's one thing, but that is not what peppers is.

The problem here is, Jerry can't go spending TONS of money next season bc of his position in the CBA. He could if he weren't where he is. However, you spend that much on Jules and he plays up to his potential next year it's still not a loss. His value will diminish due to his age, and he will be a cheaper option come 2011.

I could be way off, but it seems the only things we can do are let him walk or pay him cheddar.

You don't get a great performance every week from any defensive end, at least in terms of numbers. There are some games when they have the o-lineman completely outmatched, and they get 3-4 sacks.

The most you can hope for is to get good push every week and pressure on the QB. I think Peppers did that pretty reliably after the terrible start to the season.

He still isn't worth $22 million.

"After being held to a career-low 2½ sacks in 2007, the Panthers still offered to make Peppers the NFL's highest-paid defensive player. Peppers on Tuesday provided conflicting reasons on why he rejected the contract.

"That deal was to make me the highest-paid defensive player, but slightly, very slightly," Peppers said. "I didn't really feel the sincerity behind that deal."

But later in the rambling answer during the radio phone interview, Peppers also indicated he wasn't worthy of such a deal.

"I had 2½ sacks that season and they're coming to offer me being the highest-paid defensive player. Like, I can't even accept that," Peppers said. "I'm not deserving of that.""

Franchise him again and work a trade for whatever they can get...even if its only a 4th or 5th round pick in the draft.

I just can't see that happening

It basically equates to playing with fire because you slap the tag on the guy and all of a sudden you can't make any moves until you get him off the books. But, if for some reason you can't work out a deal with another team and you are stuck paying him 20+ you are completely and totally fucked as franchise.

They just need to let him walk and leave their offseason options open

You're not screwed if there isn't a cap next year...Which also makes it more likely a team like Oakland or Washington will overspend to bring him in.

Here's the thing about that though.

It's not a "free for all" on spending money because franchises will have to get back under the cap as soon as the new CBA is ratified. So, you aren't going to sign a guy to a ridiculous deal for 4-5 years and fuck yourself over an unmanageable contract where one player is eating 20% or more of your cap.

They'll just more than likely continue down the same path and try to stay near the new projected cap number. Which would mean no crazy deal for Peppers or any other player.

Franchising him for one year won't hurt you in the long run regardless of the new collective bargaining agreement

It just comes down to whether or not Jerry Richardson wants to pay him $20 million for a year

Peppers seems to forgot a few things when asking for all this money.

1. He's not the league's biggest impact player on defense -- not even in the top 10 as far as I'm concerned
2. He has a reputation for taking plays off, being hard to motivate, being nullified by lesser talent
3. He's what, 31? That's over the hill by NFL standards
4. He's not as versatile as he thinks. Can he drop back into pass coverage? Sure. Is he a LB? I sure as hell don't see it.

The panthers will be better off letting him walk and spending the cap money on DT, OL, and WR depth

I don't believe that is feasable as players want nice guaranteed money every year. He isn't going to go for $Texas for one year than then get 4 mill guaranteed for the next four years. He wants to be the highest paid player in the NFL.

On top of that, what if they get the new CBA agreed on and there is no uncapped year? Teams have no way of knowing that this offseason so no franchise would be willing to sign a player to such a deal

^^My point is, they could have traded him last year after he was franchised...From what I heard, plenty of teams were interested, but none wanted to give up what they were asking for him (2 first day draft picks). I doubt they'd have a hard time finding a trade partner willing to give him a long term deal...and if they lower the asking price to whatever they can get in terms of a draft pick, they actually get something out of it instead of just letting him walk.

Even if it backfires and they can't trade him, chances are it will be an uncapped year, so there won't be any long term ramifications, since it's a one year deal.

^^ Peppers didn't sign his franchise tender until right before training camp so the Panthers couldn't do anything with his rights. They were absolutely powerless in that situation.

Then, he came out with that three team list of Saints, Bucs, and Pats to which the Panthers told his agent they could part with him for two first rounders. At that point, his agent tried to work out a deal and but no team was willing to give up that kind of compensation in addition to signing him to a lucrative deal. I think the Pats had the best offer at two 6th rounders.

That is exactly what would happen this year too. He won't sign his tender so he has a say in where he could possibly be traded to and in the process tie up every single spending dollar the Panthers have this offseason. As long as he doesn't sign, his agent is the only person that can negotiate with other teams. If he signs, then the Panthers can negotiate a deal with any team and get max compensation with no regard to what team they are actually trading him too. We literally just went through this exact same situation last offseason. What makes you think it will be any different this time around?

Do you really want to go through all that grief to get two 6th rounders and potentially fuck ourselves, or let the man walk and leave all our doors open to spending in FA and the draft?

He isn't worth it. It isn't about saving face anymore. He just said he will not be signing a long term deal with Panthers so no matter what happens he walks after raping us financially for another year. He can completely tank it next year, be a cancer, and talk the shit he wants and still hit the free agent market in Spring '11.

^^again, we have a month to see how the cap situation will shake out before we have to submit our franchise player. If the 2010 season is uncapped (which it looks almost certain it will be), there will be absolutely no adverse effects on their ability to spend $ on other players even if they have to pay peppers 20 mil.

Quote :

yes...especially since they don't have a first this year, they need all they can get.

Not if he expects to get anywhere near the money he's looking for in 2011. Plus, it would be in his best interest to get a long term deal with someone this year anyway....I highly doubt any team is going to sign him to the 4-5 year mega contract he's looking for when he's 32 after this year.

Couldn't disagree more. Where is all that money going to come from then? The Panthers financially can't spend like that. We don't have money for days like the Redskins. You gonna kick in 10 mill to make that happen?

Bullshit. He might not make 20 mill guaranteed over the lifetime of his next deal. Also, the NFL doesn't give a fuck about attitude and some team would be willing to throw money at him regardless of his performance this coming season. You think the guy disappeared and didn't go 110% in games before? If the Panthers force him back it could get ugly.

You seem to be the only Panther fan that is willing to bankrupt the future for two draft picks that will never see the field anyway. I don't understand it.

So, the less than 5 mil increase from what they paid him last year is going to make it impossible to spend on other players in an uncapped year? If they fielded a competitive team last year with a cap, that additional 5 mil isn't going to make a big difference...I'd argue that the extension given to delhomme was a bigger hamstring to overall success than the $ they paid peppers last year.

and, all this is assuming we don't find a trade parter.

Quote :

Are you serious?...Haynesworth got over 40 mil guaranteed last year, and most analysts are saying peppers will get more than that on the free agent market....However, the longer he waits to sign a long term deal, the lower that # goes.

Quote :
" Also, the NFL doesn't give a fuck about attitude and some team would be willing to throw money at him regardless of his performance this coming season."

Totally disagree...they might be willing to give decent money for a 1-2 year deal, but I highly doubt any team is going to give a long term, block buster deal to a 32 year old DE coming off a shitty season.

Quote :

It was supposed to get ugly last season too, but he signed, fell in line and had one of his best seasons...No matter what happens, he is not going to refuse to sign a franchise offer, or tank a whole season on purpose...It would just be dumb business.

Alright we're just going in circles now. You're entire financial POV is based on something that might not happen for starters. You refuse to even acknowledge that next season could be a capped year. Second, what free agents did we sign last year? None because ALL OUR MONEY WAS IN PEPPERS

Quote :
"all this is assuming we don't find a trade parter"

WE can't find a trade partner because he won't sign his tender. It's illegal for the Panthers to have any discussions about Peppers to other teams! Were you paying attention at all last year? Only his agent can talk to other teams.

From the Redskins, the worst money team in the NFL and they have 20% of their cap counted for one DT. Snyder is an overpaying idiot.

Quote :

ummmm...... he already did last year and now he is real pissed. Why would the guy not take control of where he wanted to go?

Bottom Line: Peppers is walking and the franchise will let him go and be just fine with it. I don't think you were paying very much attention last year as all this was covered less than 12 months ago.
