I've had better luck with live shrimp when I hook them through the tail. That way, it looks like the shrimp is fleeing from a predator as you reel.

So either I misplaced my box or someone stole it out of my truck. Either way i'm out 3 saltwater spinning reels.Who has good deals on new ones?
2/10/2010 7:03:52 PM
what size?
2/10/2010 7:04:30 PM
That spot tail I caught last fall was probably about the biggest thing i'm looking at catching.. unless I start getting into king (which I don't see myself doing in the near future).
2/10/2010 7:05:26 PM
what size reels do you want?
2/10/2010 7:09:30 PM
This is where you're going to see my ignorance. I've never actually bought a reel so I don't know how they're sized. Everything I have was given to me by my father Hence my telling you how big of a fish haha. I think he was 20 lbs 8 oz if I remember correctly.
2/10/2010 7:11:09 PM
do you fish with live bait or artificials? line weight? how long/stiff of a rod?
2/10/2010 7:12:24 PM
lately I've been using cut bait but I'll try some live bait this year. Test probably in the lower teens. One rod is 8', two are 10', all medium.
2/10/2010 7:15:51 PM
so you're surf fishing?[Edited on February 10, 2010 at 7:19 PM. Reason : what kinda budget you got? if you're not jewish, you can get something that'll last forever.]
2/10/2010 7:18:54 PM
surf/pier.What kind of price ranges are we looking at? I'm not penniless but I am buying 3 reels so I don't want to have to finance it haha.
2/10/2010 8:20:41 PM
you can get some quantum boca 50s or 60s for like $130 each i think[Edited on February 10, 2010 at 8:24 PM. Reason : cabo is better, but lots more $]
2/10/2010 8:24:07 PM
Preciate it. I'll look around.
2/10/2010 8:27:30 PM
Sling check out bass pro shop. i was up there yesterday looking at a new saltwater rod. they had some really good deals on ones already put together. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_89082_151003003_151000000_151003000?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT
2/10/2010 8:42:59 PM
hell yeah go try to sling a 4/0 or 6/0 off the beach
2/10/2010 8:46:14 PM
Hey neuse i got a question for you. i dont do a whole lot of fresh water fishing, when i was up there i started looking at crappie fishing rods. i know what crappie are, but why are the rods for them so long?[Edited on February 10, 2010 at 8:50 PM. Reason : .]
2/10/2010 8:50:37 PM
Did you see the picture of my spot tail? I caught him on a 1/0.
2/10/2010 8:57:46 PM
there are different reasons and most of it comes down to personal preference. the most important thing for a crappie rod is that it's light weight and most folks would want medium to slow action. some folks like the longer rods from a boat because it lets them get their jig right where they want it up in between trees and stumps, but still allows for a vertical jigging. in other words, you can keep the rod tip right over the bait and move the jig up and down without having to have the boat as close to the stumps/trees/cover as you would with a short rod. this is very similar to the method of "flipping" that a lot of bass fisherman use (they use very long rods for that too). other folks like to use a long rod for crappie because they fish from the bank and it lets them cast further. a lot of times crappie feed in the middle of a pond at the surface and the long rod lets you throw a small minnow under a cork out that far. you don't have to have a long rod to catch crappie, it's just that those long, limber rods are the only ones that are kinda made specifically for crappie. when i fish for crappie on the canoe, i use a 5'6" or 6' rod. it does just fine, but those rods aren't marketed specifically for any one type of fishing.i don't have rods/reels for specific species. i have a wide variety of rods and a wide variety of reels. i choose a combo from what i have to fit the species, bait/lure, water, conditions, etc. i often find myself swapping reels from rod to rod based on what a specific trip calls for. i also like to buy spinning reels that come with spare spools so i can have a couple of line options. if i'm trout fishing, but there's a good chance of a rockfish bite, i might up the line a little so that i'm prepared. i do stuff that the casual/occasional fisherman probably doesn't wanna bother with.Hi, I'm Chris and I'm a fishaholic.[Edited on February 10, 2010 at 9:12 PM. I found the Cabo 60 at sports authority for 139.99.. I think I might buy those. My dad wanted me to check out Daiwa because he says he usually buys them. What do you think about the Cabo 60 vs. something like this: http://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-coastal3500-coastal-inshore-spinning-reel.html?zmam=73201554&zmas=2&zmac=51&zmap=daiwa-coastal3500-coastal-inshore-spinning-reel ?The Cabo has one more bearing but the Daiwa has a better ratio. What about longevity?
2/13/2010 3:44:57 PM
I don't know much about those daiwa reels. Daiwa makes decent stuff. You're not gonna find a spinning reel with better longevity than a cabo. The bail is magnetic, so there are no springs to wear out. The drag is fully sealed and is flawless. It is the best reel under $200 from what I've seen. I have always been a shimano guy and I hated quantum, but they really got the PTS reels right, especially the cabo. I think you'd be happy with the daiwa, but I highly doubt it'd perform better than the cabo. The money's the same, so go with the cabo.
2/13/2010 7:12:14 PM
Fuck it, you sold me haha. Now I just need to figure out if 139.99 is a sale price or regular price, the cheapest I can find them online is 200 bucks.
2/13/2010 9:29:56 PM
sounds too good to be true. my cabo cost me $200 and it's only a 30.[Edited on February 14, 2010 at 9:47 AM. Reason : actually, i think i got it 15% off or something so maybe only $170. don't remember.]
2/14/2010 9:47:04 AM
FUCKturns out it was a clearance sale and they're all gone. I should have bought them when I was at the store the first time     :mad:So, if i'm trying to keep in the ~130 price range.. Daiwa or Shimano?[Edited on February 15, 2010 at 6:21 PM. Reason : .]
2/15/2010 6:20:29 PM
like i said, i'm a shimano guy. just personal preference i think.check out the quantum boca. it's like a step down from the cabo, but i've heard good stuff about them.
2/15/2010 6:24:37 PM
Cabo is the only one i've seen in the stores (in my size). Everybody carries a lot of Shimano and i've had a few others recommend them to me.
2/15/2010 6:27:16 PM
you can order the boca onlinethe shimano socorro would probably be a good choice. i have a 4000 socorro and it's a basic, solid spinning reel.[Edited on February 15, 2010 at 6:37 PM. Reason : get a spheros if you wanna spend more money]

Yo. Fellow anglers. I need your input.I am going to the Keys (Lower Matecumbe) for spring break, and wanted to challenge myself to catch 12 gamefish during the week I will be there. Shellfish do not count (duh). Here is my list so far:1) Tarpon2) Redfish3) Spotted seatrout4) Gag grouper5) Jewfish (Goliath grouper)6) Jack Crevalle7) Shark (any species)8) Yellowtail snapper9) Mangrove snapper10) Snook11) Bonefish12) BarracudaHelp me finish the list. In order to increase the difficulty, please consider that I will be using a 15' Boston Whaler for all of my fishing exploits, and I will have my girlfriend in tow.grazie[Edited on February 16, 2010 at 6:45 PM. 2/16/2010 6:47:08 PM
I don't know that I've ever heard of anyone catching flounder down there. I've never targeted them that far south (so much more to try to catch). Lemme look up their ranges....There are a couple species. I won't rule it out, but I won't really be targeting them much. Will post pics if I come across one.[Edited on February 16, 2010 at 6:51 PM. how bout cobia or spanish? spadefish?
2/16/2010 6:55:36 PM
I'd have to run up towards the Gulf to find the spanish and cobia, according to local fishing reports. Spadefish aren't considered an FL gamefish, though they do pan-fry quite well [Edited on February 16, 2010 at 7:00 PM. Reason : spadefish]
2/16/2010 6:59:32 PM
i'm just throwing shit around. i don't have a clue about fishing down there except for what those two faggots on VS tell me.[Edited on February 16, 2010 at 7:01 PM. Reason : they have gray trout?][Edited on February 16, 2010 at 7:02 PM. Reason : cuda might be fun]

HahahahaI've fished a bunch of the spots they have been televised fishing in. Right by Worldwide Sportsman is a great flat, and it is usually loaded with several species. I will actually go near there to look for rays for jewfishing^gray trout = weakfish I think. And yes, but specks are in higher numbers this time of year[Edited on February 16, 2010 at 7:06 PM. 2/16/2010 7:09:17 PM
i cannot wait to graduate from this hole and have time to fish again
2/16/2010 7:10:06 PM
Move to FL. Ridiculous fishing. Doesn't matter where in the state you live- you're never more than 2 hours from coastline. Pretty respectable freshwater pursuits as well.
2/16/2010 7:12:59 PM
if i stick with the company i'm going to work for, florida will probably be a legit option, if not the only option, for me in the future. i really like NC and the fishing we have, but i'm getting frustrated b/c i know how awesome our coastal fisheries could be with the proper legislation. it'd be tough to leave NC, but i'd seriously think about FL.

Does anyone here fish Cape Hatteras or Harker's Island area regularly?
2/18/2010 10:42:33 AM
i've fished around harker's island and cape lookout right much. less now than i used to, though. what do you need to know?
2/18/2010 10:57:46 AM
My family has had a place there since before I came around....but I haven't managed to do much inland fishing. Where would I be able to spot some red drum around the inlet or marsh? aaaand...can I charter you and your boat sometime?
