We should smash the whole prison system. This scandal would be yet another example of its horrors.

sequestration is not the only purpose of prison.it is also intended to be a deterrent.
4/4/2010 11:42:24 AM
According to the constitution, it’s supposed to be for rehabilitation, but conservatives generally reel at that though.

Need more details to pass judgment on whether that was negligence on the part of the gov't.He claimed he was Mexican. Claimed he was born in Mexico City, signed paperwork to the same effect. All of this from Bipolar disorder?I guess the gov't could have done better fact checking, but is that really the precedent we want to set? Lie to the gov't repeatedly and then sue them when they go on your word?
10/15/2010 8:47:59 AM
They say he claimed to be from mexico. The very nature of their operation shows that these are evil men, not to be trusted. If they weren't evil, they would welcome transparency and investigation.

Where there is no oversight or transparency, the worst can be assumed...expected even.I remind you that citizens were threatened with arrest for approaching this building on its sidewalks.

Well I certainly believe that any injustices against american citizens should be ceased and rectified, and those responsible for such injustices should be punished as well. However, I wanted to make the point that non-citizens don't, or at least shouldn't, be afforded the same rights, and in constitutional terms they are not to be afforded those rights.
10/20/2010 8:18:51 PM
We're not talking 30 acres and a mule here. All I ask is a decent shitter, access to counsel(mostly to ensure the details are right) and public record of their whereabouts while awaiting deportation.

Screw links, go visit yourself.140 Centrewest Court, Suite 100, Cary NC 27513Watch them unload prisoners from unmarked vans to a building with no signs or American flag. You can even knock on the door and be arrested if you're brave enough. Many have been threatened with arrest for standing on the sidewalk.I won't post any links because nothing has changed. Individuals are whisked away and held in inadequate prisons with no access to legal counsel. No public records of their whereabouts exist, leading their families to believe they've died. The families that seek answers are threatened or referred to the bureaucratic headquarters in Atlanta, where no answers will be found. This system deals with illegal immigrants. It is a prototype for how the government will make legitimate citizens disappear.[Edited on November 29, 2010 at 12:18 PM. Reason : .]

Wow so that's about a 10 minute drive from me. It's tempting to drive by the place with a friend so I can get a photo of myself standing in front of an umarked federal holding center. At the same time I feel like the small novelty of such a photo would wear quite thin if they decided to make a big deal of a suspicious ginger taking photos of sensitive facilities vital to homeland security or some such nonsense. I would be shocked if I was deported to anywhere more exotic than Ireland or Canada though.A private prison company was named in the suit mentioned in this thread. Any ideas whether these local sites (Raleigh/Cary area) are run by private prison companies as opposed to directly by ICE or other agencies? I'm curious because you might be able to see which local elected officials (given the makeup of city and county government I highly doubt this is something that would be isolated to either party) took money from that private prison company in the past.[Edited on December 19, 2010 at 12:05 AM. 12/18/2010 11:59:43 PM
Without looking into the suit or private prison company, I would suspect that much of their role involves transport and extradition. This is a pretty common practice actually. Plus, since the company is working with ICE and therefore likely contracted at the federal level, what leads you to believe that county/local officials are on the take?
12/19/2010 10:13:53 AM
On the take is a bit strong but I was curious, in particular, about Pendergraff. Sadly I think you have to file a request to the county by fax or mail to get the finance reports for candidates that far back. Though if he had received contributions from them back when he was sherriff that would have been some hard-to-beleive forsight on their part since it would be a feat of near prescience to have predicted with any reliability that he specifically would be the current head of ICE.I did look into their PAC and their contributions numbers though and they basically give moderately to both parties in all states - regardless of whether or not they have operations there. Their employee contributions though tend to focus around Tennessee where they're based and besides and consist of donations to various candidates of both parties - with republican candidates tending to get slightly more. That's not surprising though since they're based in Tennessee and the state as a whole leans republican in the first place. Their PAC does make donations to NC candidates but only one or two of the national candidates they sponsored were even elected and none of their senate choices were. All three presidental candidates who received donations from their PAC (same name as the company actually) were defeated - their Democratic candidate of choice was defeated early in the primary even.Anyways yeah I followed the money from them but it mostly lead to unemployed politicians - and their total expenditures (250-350k) is dwarfed by other PACs focused on similar issues. I mean maybe they curried enough favor to get someone's nephew hired as a night guardsmen at a data entry annex somewhere. Ah well I was curious, read through far too many non-OCR'd PDF documents, and found that particular private prison contractor is probably one of the least influential ones when it comes to federal immigration matters or ICE-local law enforcement cooperation.[Edited on December 20, 2010 at 6:51 AM.
