They're already getting paid legally. The opportunity to go to college for 4-5 years AND for free I think is plenty of "pay" for your typical NCAA scholarship athlete.[Edited on December 23, 2009 at 4:57 PM. Reason : []

1. someone just watched the u2. majority of schools lose money with their athletic programs, so that argument is thrown out*don't know specifics...but have seen in a few articles where very few programs bring in a profit in the end[Edited on December 25, 2009 at 12:01 AM. Reason : asd]

i agree man, they shouldn't have to walk on!
12/25/2009 2:58:59 AM
they should pay them in drugs
12/25/2009 11:16:14 AM
I agree with this thread. When I was an undergrad at State, I always detested getting accosted by the athletes pandering on Hillsborough St., just to get by.
12/25/2009 11:54:54 AM
Someone earlier inferred this, but I am going to say it directly. If they are being paid unofficially now, how does officially paying them make it any better?Hypothetically: I make $0 now but the university pays me $1,000 unofficially. Change the rules so players can be paid - I make $1,000 now but the university can now more easily disguise payments since money is already changing hands and gives me $10,000 now.Yeah, your solution sure sounds like it would fix the problem...
12/25/2009 5:58:30 PM
but if there are no rules then there will be parity because you won't have schools "taking the high road" to not pay athletes and every schools boosters will just give whatever gifts they want.I'm not suggesting the school payroll include athletes, I'm just saying theres no rule on people related to the school paying athletes or giving them gifts of any kind.

Hesitated to bump a thread by this user but the NW ruling today basically ushers in the end of the "student athlete"
3/26/2014 3:29:20 PM
did you type "NW" just to bust my balls?

http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=news/local&id=9481182Did expect paid athletes. Did not expect union, especially before paid bit was put through. This is the final nail though. Nothing stopping them from here. Now waiting for first strike/lockout.Side bit, Waiting for universities to have to start providing insurance under obamacare [Edited on March 26, 2014 at 9:04 PM. Real simple. If the are good enough to go pro out of high school, let them go. If not, they are using the university training facilities, coaching, and tv exposure get a shot at the nba, thus they are getting paid already. Yes the colleges make money off of them, no they are not entitled to that money. Go play in the effing china league with Richard Howell if you want that money so bad.[Edited on March 26, 2014 at 9:58 PM. Reason : oh yeah, some actually get a free education out of it]
3/26/2014 9:54:57 PM
i would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a 17 year old boy try out for the NFL, then a GM drafts him based on potential, then he gets fucking lit up like a christmas tree
3/26/2014 9:59:47 PM
^^They don't need to be paid by the school or ncaa, but if johnny manziel can do a commercial after winning a heisman and get paid what normal athletes are paid for it, it shouldn't make him ineligible to ever play again.I think that's what the article said their goal would be
3/26/2014 10:13:08 PM
richard howell is the man
3/26/2014 10:30:49 PM
I hope every team has a Rudy style player strike for their fucking walk ons.
3/27/2014 7:24:40 AM
I can't wait to see replacement college football during a strike with the local high school JV squad

Yeah, there's plenty standing in the way of this (stupid) ruling. Here's hoping this gets stopped. If it doesn't every other college sport can kiss it's ass good bye, no more subsidies to keep them running.
3/27/2014 4:16:06 PM
why do you feel that this ruling is stupid?
3/27/2014 4:28:38 PM
if you pay them that will be a salary to replace the tuition, room and board, free clothes, meals, etc. 95% of them will come out with less 100% of the time. Basketball and football players at a small % of school will break even or actually benefit financially from being "paid"
3/27/2014 11:17:21 PM
I think we should make it a free-for-all.The compensation remains a free education, but let the players take unlimited cash and gifts.
3/28/2014 12:00:09 AM
^^ 60% of the time it works every time
3/28/2014 9:30:53 AM
i'm fine with them getting paid to replace all the free shit they get
3/28/2014 10:08:14 AM
3/28/2014 10:21:44 AM
will compensation be performance based? would a Johnny Manziel or Jameis Winston make more money than a Jay Davis?
3/28/2014 10:41:47 AM
^^ non-athletes on scholarship are allowed to make money off of their name/in their fieldwhy shouldn't athletes be allowed to?[Edited on March 28, 2014 at 11:25 AM. Reason : ^^^^]
3/28/2014 11:24:45 AM
^^Or better yet, as employees, can the University fire the players after say a 0fer season in their conference?Or fire an employee after dropping a game winning pass?NC is an AT-WILL employment state. Don't need much reason to fire here...
3/28/2014 12:24:08 PM
they should just get the same stipend that a graduate TA gets and it should be even across the board at all schools, otherwise athletes will just go to the schools with the most money.
3/28/2014 12:31:46 PM
^^ collective bargaining, brah
3/28/2014 12:36:50 PM

^yep. Scholarships are one year only. Coaches decide who gets themWhen I played baseball I got 50% my first year, then we had a meeting and they said they wanted to give me 60%. I said "ok".. If they didn't want to give me any or reduce it they certainly could have.

Does he really go to bed hungry? I find that kinda hard to believe.http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/07/us/ncaa-basketball-finals-shabazz-napier-hungry/
4/8/2014 11:43:19 AM
why?he certainly isn't the first player to make that claim
4/8/2014 11:52:40 AM
I guess between talking on his iPhone and browsing scouts.com with his data plan, driving his sports car, and not going to his remedial english class, he doesn't have time to go over to the all you can eat dining hall and not starve. poor college athlete on a full scholarship
4/8/2014 12:03:44 PM
^^ because he has a meal plan and dining facilities he can use (hell, he probably also has a nutritionist)i mean, i think players should be payed (really that college sports should be disbanded entirely), but I don't buy that any of them are going hungry
4/8/2014 12:19:33 PM
a meal plan that is useless after 7 pmHodge has already stated that there were times when he went to bed hungry, too
4/8/2014 12:20:39 PM
I too went to college on a meal plan. It's all you can eat at the dining hall. And that wasn't even at the Case Dining Hall that actually had good food. And many a night I had to eat Ramen Noodles and Nabs and peanut butter sandwiches. I probably ordered pizza twice through my first two years of college. I understand some of the arguments for paying players, but I really don't think they're starving.
4/8/2014 12:22:20 PM
starving is different than hungryand I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you didn't come from abject poverty, like some players do
4/8/2014 12:27:46 PM
No, but I rarely had any spending money for food beyond my meal plan. I guess if I think back, there were nights i went to bed "hungry".
4/8/2014 12:37:16 PM
also gotta factor in the fact that athletes burn far more calories on a daily basis than either you or I, seeing as how they kind of have to
