ha, and it took apple 3 iterations to get basic functionality into a phone. The droid may not be the prettiest phone on the market but it along with future android devices are going to give apple a serious run for their money.[Edited on December 20, 2009 at 4:37 PM. Reason : ]

Palm continues to tank because they made a poor decision by putting the Pre on sprint exclusively. The Pre and WebOS has a lot of potential and could become a serious competitor if the rumored release of the Pre Plus happens on verizon next year.[Edited on December 20, 2009 at 5:58 PM. Reason : ]

Copy and Paste

I'd go with multimedia messaging, personally. The fact that it took 3+ years to get their phone in a position to receive images without going to a website where you have to type in a user name and password (that you couldn't copy and paste). We can also go with the comedy option of "make calls".

Which the iPhone now has, so it's hardly a consideration for someone shopping for a phone today... Also, please don't compare the droid to 'the iphone', there's a significant performance difference between them, paticularly the 3G and 3GS, the latter of which renders some web pages quite a bit faster than the droid, or really any other 'phone'.

I have a blackberry bold and I love the phone. The email is simply great. As soon as an email is sent to me I get it and can reply on my phone quickly. As someone who used to constantly check my email, this is something I absolutely love because I never have to check it. Also, Blackberry Messaging is pretty sweet if your friends have a BB. It is probably on both other phones but I do really enjoy having google maps and GPS with my phone. It has kept me from getting lost countless times.I am not a fan of the iphone due to its lack of keyboard, just a personal preference though. I haven't played with a droid but I would be willing to switch over if the email service was as solid as my BB.Of course maybe my love of my BB comes from the fact that my previous phone was the PPC-6700 the biggest piece of shit I have ever owned.

without a BES a blackberry is worthless imho

And I wouldn't say there's a "significant" performance difference since they're pretty much even hardware wise. And more often than not, the 3GS advantage is negligible in browsing.

^thats still not basic phone functionality. 'phone' functionality is what I had listed earlier. Everything else are extra features.^but on that note...what can the iPhone do that those phones can't from day one? exactly.[Edited on December 21, 2009 at 12:21 AM. Reason : .]

at the time the mePhone came out, I think copy/paste & MMS were basic phone functions for a smartphone...a fucking SMARTphone. my 3 previous phones (smart and not) had these capabilities before the iphone. so yeh, I'd consider them to be basic for a smartphone.

Hold on let me start up my blackberry (waits 20 minutes). Oh great here comes my home screen! (waits 10 more minutes for service book). Hmm ok let me make a call! (every number has a half second delay). I had an 8700 and an 8310 over 3 or so years. Both of them were slow as shit (although the 8330 was worse). The device software is awful and so are most of the apps. Combine that with a low power processor and you have a device thats pretty painful to use. Its aggravating as hell to be waiting on the device to respond to something you clicked or something you typed.
12/21/2009 9:56:51 AM
not my experience at all. boots <10 sec, no typing delays., etc i don't give a shit about apps. the speed is just fine. in fact, of all my friends that have blackberries, none of us have those issues and we all enjoy them...
12/21/2009 10:00:46 AM
Unless you have actually owned/operated these phones extensively, you really should just STFU. Owning one phone, and throwing stones at another design without any operator experience is really silly. I hate annoying fan boys.I own an Iphone, and really like it, but I cant really compare it to droid because I havent used a droid. I will make the statement that having an iphone as my next phone is NOT a foregone conclusion. There is a feature the iphone still doesnt have, that I will be looking for in my next phone, and that is the ability to record phone calls. I consider that basic functionality that has been on the last few phones I have had (years previous).[Edited on December 21, 2009 at 10:06 AM. Reason : .]

After owning an iPhone for about 6 months now, I can safely say that I have absolutely no interest in having another one once my contract expires.I've never used such an intentionally gimped (for no apparent reason) piece of hardware before in my life.[Edited on December 21, 2009 at 10:22 AM. no bullshitting, but that was from full power off10 sec from full power off94 sec from battery pullI've only experienced one major RIM issue when I went without internet, other than that, I haven't had any real issues at all (at least none that I have noticed, and I constantly check my phone). so I'm not sure about everyone laughing at me, in fact, I laugh at other people because I've had service everywhere... and others haven't. I don't go for leaked OSs... mine works just fine and when an update is available, I update. Now the Storm was pretty much a POS to start off with. and I like BBs for the email, BBM, keyboard, and the very few apps I use. I've played with a storm, iphone, and droid... they're all nice and have their pro's and con's, and honestly, I may get one of those in the next year, just as a change of pace. However, the 8330 has been a solid phone for me for years.

ha, just for shits and giggles I pulled the battery on 3 of the 5 blackberries in front of me. From a cold boot to being usable, I got:Sprint 8330- 2:05Sprint 8830- 2:15Verizon 9530- 2:45Need to go steal a pre now. Those things take forever to come back up. mine only takes that long after an update. I'm imagining that the amount of memory used must have affect the boot time - do those have a lot of stuff on them?
12/21/2009 11:00:38 AM
The first 2 have been wiped clean and have no 3rd party apps. The 8830 is inactive and not on a line and the 8330 is just a spare we have for bid days. Both boot with around 46megs available. The Storm is my personal phone with about 10 apps and boots with 30megs.[Edited on December 21, 2009 at 11:05 AM. Reason : ]

There's a very clear speed difference between the 3G and the 3GS in rendering web pages, particularly if they're graphics heavy. I want to want a Droid, and was sure I'd get one until I spent some time with one. I'd say it's much faster than all previous iPhones, though a bit slower than the 3GS from my perspective. I do use data while on a voice call all the time though, and as much as I don't like AT/T as a company, that's one of the key features I'm not keen on giving up. Next year the decision should be harder to make with (hopefully) the ability to take the next iPhone on Verizon's network and vice versa...

I mean the software itself is slow as shit and the interface sucks. (Funny thing about why its slow, it constantly checks for debuggers and detaches them if found) Plus the way they handle the library. Lets say I put music on my iphone at home, now i want to transfer it from my phone to my comp at work. Cant do it with itunes. They dont want you moving your own music around. You have to wipe the device and sync whats on your work comp. Lets say I have a song at work I dont have at home. i want to put it on my iphone. Itunes decides since my phone is paired with my comp at home, if i want to add any music from my work comp i have to wipe it and then sync that single song. I mean compare that shit to the zune. The zune software is 1000000x better than itunes at just being a media player and store. It also makes sync much easier. But the best thing is the zune is an external disk drive so you can just copy stuff willy nilly to it from explorer. So creating a 3rd party tool is braindead easy if you wanted to. Its kind of funny because itunes is such a piece of shit and everyone wants to come up with 3rd party tools, but apple always shuts them down. The Zune software is way better to the point where everyone would use it anyway rendering the fact that its simple to do a 3rd party tool moot. The iPhone itself is pretty damned good, but itunes + the restrictions on media + the lack of open development are kind of a pain. I really wish Ballmer would get his head out of his ass and do up a zune phone. Replace windows mobile with an embeded NT (like 360) w/ full .net and directx support.

say what you want about iTunes' performance...but the UI is great and thats partially one of the main reasons I use it.After using Zune Marketplace, I find their UI too over the top. They tried too hard and now its just a mess. Not the whole UI, there are still parts of it i like.[Edited on December 21, 2009 at 6:49 PM. Reason : .]
