Also, the drive from the Lake Wheeler/Tryon area really isn't that bad. I lived in Campus Edge (formerly Ivy Chase) for a year and it only took me about 10-15 minutes to get from my apartment to in a parking space (that was also in the morning). This year I'm living at UWoods and it only took me 5-10 minutes to get in a parking place from my apartment for an afternoon class.

You will find some good deals for cheap houses rented by Barker Realty. RESIST. I had a terrible experience with them where they completely screwed us repeatedly and eventually stole our entire deposit. AVOID Barker Realty.

I will toss in a vote for Sumter Square Apts if you can get away with driving (cheap, good value for what you pay)... and the Kaplan area is good fun (and near disc golf!) if you can find a townhouse around there.

I've seen a lot available on Kaplan and in Hunter's Creek, and that's covered by Wolfline. Is there any love going down for this area, besides the comment above? The whole area seems nice and I'm quite tempted.

rhyne realty is a decent company. they have their own apartment complex at western and gorman which is kind of near some sketchy stuff, but convenient to campus. they also rent a lot of units and houses north of hillsborough. i had good service with them.

Do not live at Lake Johnson Mews. Worst company I've ever had to deal with.

Basically lost about 800-900 between my roommate and myself through flood damage, contracts, and then there was that whole stint where they towed everyones car during spring break...

Why does the one guy not have a car?

If you're looking to have fun/party, go to Campus Edge, UWoods, etc. up on Trailwood. Plenty of pussy around there. They are all pretty much the same, but it's college slums so expect the management to treat you like rich kids that they can exploit. It's not bad, but the visitor parking will suck. The opportunities will be plentiful at these places, but just having your own apartment anywhere should be enough for you to keep your dick wet.

Driving to campus should be a very small factor in where you live. Just remember that you need to leave 30-40 mins before you have class and you should be fine. I live right there at Sumter Square and it usually takes me 10 minutes to get to school and get parked. I'm an English major as well and I park in the neighborhoods behind Hillsborough St. everyday. The walk to class, even when I have to park way out past Clark or down by the Little Theater, is only 10-15 minutes. It's better than paying ~$300 to park on campus. If you park in one of the decks then it'll take almost as long walking to class because there will be a lot of slightly uphill parts.

The guy doesn't have a car because he's black... uh, I mean, because he can't afford one.

We're actually working on getting him a cheap car right now, he has family that will give him like 2000 for a used.

Sumter Square and Hunter's Creek / Kaplan all look good to me, and I'll do some calling after Christmas break.

And no, I'm not really looking for a party place--we have enough friends to go to other parties or have our own, and there's not much struggle to getting pussy and its certainly not anchored to our slum housing facilities. We really just want a nice, affordable place with a degree of privacy, freedom, the ability to cook stupidly high-fat breakfast foods, and drink... et cetera.

I lived at Gorman Crossing for a few years. It was nice when I moved in, but it slowly deteriorated so I am not sure what it is like now. The rent is reduced for State students, they allow pets, they have a pool, and there are Wolfline stops all along the complex. Also, they have 9 month leases which is good for students.

I bought a townhouse in Falcon Ridge off Kaplan this past year. I know that some of the neighbors rent out their houses. Our HOA website (grandchester meadows) sometimes posts if people are renting. The renters can be really annoying because they are often the ones who do not follow parking rules and sometimes throw parties. We have all learned just to call the police if they are booming music or making a lot of noise after 11:30, but it is still a problem if you have to get up early.

Crazy parties would not be an issue, we're a mellow bunch. If we want to party hard, we'll go somewhere else. Otherwise we're content.

^ Net, my townhouse was in Hunter's creek. I had no complaints in general with the area; everything was quiet and fine for the most part. The only bad thing to happen in a year was my roommate and gf's cars getting burglarized (just took CD decks). In my experience that can happen just about everywhere though.

Sumter square was cheaper, but not as big as our Hunter's creek townhouse.
