also as an FYI, Netflix (as well pretty much every other online streaming service) is available on both consoles via Playon. It's not as slick as the 360s implementation, and you don't get HD, but it works. You just need a PC on the network to setup the media server on.

^^hence the TOO LATE part. because i didn't say they didn't do it. It just took them so long to offer what Xbox offered in 2005.^lol. [Edited on October 23, 2009 at 3:49 PM. Reason : .]

playon isn't very reliable, half the time i get weird errors. its a non-issue though, after a couple months with netflix you've already seen the only decent instant watch movies

^not an accurate statement at all. but everyone is entitled to their own opinions. *shrug*
10/23/2009 4:31:42 PM
^ that's my entire gripe with the PS3 situation. Any game designed to maximize on the hardware superiority of the PS3 has to be a console exclusive. If the GTA series was still a Playstation exclusive, the system would be performing much better in the marketplace.
10/23/2009 4:39:40 PM
PS3 doesn't really have the hardware superiority they claim to have (or people think they have). The biggest advantage is having larger disc size without having to use multiple discs. Most everything else is pretty similar.
10/23/2009 4:45:22 PM
What IS the hardware difference? I'm not educated when it comes to these things, but have always heard the PS3's graphics hardware was beyond the 360. Can someone speak to this?
10/23/2009 4:54:31 PM
I know this sounds trivial but the main reason that I don't like the PS3 is the controller, just personal preference
10/23/2009 5:00:44 PM
10/23/2009 5:08:51 PM
^^ not trivial at all...the controller is hugely important as it is your sole mean of input into the systemUnless you're like Jeepin4x4, who likes to put the controller on his prostate and get hit sticked in Madden so he can feel the vibrations
10/23/2009 5:23:31 PM
I really enjoy all of the content (game demos, videos, awesome arcade games) on the Xbox Live Marketplace, anything comparable on the PS3?
10/23/2009 5:23:52 PM
they have PSN store, but its not nearly as user friendly and takes upwards of 5 minutes sometimes to find a new demoMaybe its just because I experienced XBL first and got used to it, but imo the PSN store pales in comparison
10/23/2009 5:26:13 PM

I have both.I watch DVDs and blu-rays on my PS3.I play games, watch Netflix, and chat with my friends on the 360.There are a hundred little things that the Xbox does better than the PS3:-PS3 won't recognize song/artist names on an iPod (AAC format).-PS3 controller recharging is a pain and you can't replace the batteries.-If you want to use an IR remote (like my badass Harmony 550) you have to buy a bluetooth adapter, and even then it has to use a macro to turn the PS3 off.-You can chat across games with the 360.-The PS3 store is a disorganized pile of crap. There are far fewer downloadable titles worth getting compared to Live Arcade.-The PS3 controller is garbage. The tilt-sensor is useless, the rumble is too weak, the triggers should be banned from all future controllers.-Microsoft makes a noticeable effort to put content on the 360 dashboard. Major's Minute, Game with Fame, the Guild, contests, etc.Bottom line:If you can live without the few PS3 exclusives, but a 360 and build a good Friends list.If you still need blu-ray, buy a $100 blu-ray player. Unless you have cash to spare and really want to play the PS3's single player offerings.

Thanks guys. All of this was very helpful for me in deciding. I think I am going to send off my 360 for repair and keep it. LIVE is one of the best things about the system and it doesn't seem PS3 online play is on the same level. Plus, it doesn't require me to shell out $300 bucks.
10/24/2009 11:47:59 AM
Thats the most important thing. If you are happy with the 360 and have the opportunity to have it repaired free of charge then do it. Shouldn't be a second thought.

It's not an issue, but in my opinion I prefer color-coded letters over shapes. If I'm helping one of my parents play a game, I'll tell them to push the green button to jump.If I want to IM someone with a cheat code or combo sequence it's easier to send:X-Y-B-B-X-Ythansquare-triangle-circle-circle-square-triangleIt also works better for developers. I'm thinking of control tutorials and things like Guitar Hero.Rock Band controllers.[Edited on October 24, 2009 at 5:44 PM. Reason : .]

Can we complain about the font that the Playstation logo is set in nowCause that's really a deal breaker
10/24/2009 5:44:02 PM
They totally stole that font from Spider Man

Xbox Live >>>> PS3's "equivalent". Even though PS3's is free, if you pay the full price of 49.99 a year, that's only ~4 bucks a month. Get one of them on sale for like 30 bucks, and it's less than 3 per month. Is that really a budget breaker? In return for that 4 bucks a month you get more people to play with, better support for the games (games now a days are so far from polished when you buy them for whatever reason, and developers are great about getting title updates out as long as people are playing the games)When it comes to the hardware, the biggest difference is the blueray player. The slight edge the PS3 has in some areas doesn't matter when games currently won't reach the limits of a new 360 or PS3. Older Xbox's failed more, but you won't have those problems if you get a new elite. PS3 has built in WiFi but I prefer a wired connection anyway. If I really wanted to go wireless I could easily set up an access point that will go faster than the PS3's wireless and the Microsoft one you can buy for 360s. With games, many of the PS exclusive titles like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid are starting to come to Xbox. Grand Theft Auto already makes for both after being PS exclusive for a while.

I use the dpad for some XBLA games like Frogger

Didn't see it posted yet but Netflix is going to be officially supported by the PS3 by years end. http://www.netflix.com/InstantStreamingDisc

Wow, I'm surprised to see so many people liking PS controllers... Compared to every other system, they really are cheaply-produced pieces of shit, though I can totally understand why someone might like the small size and button layout. If you need any proof of this, just grab the nearest PS-anything controller. Feel how loose the sticks are... move them until you feel any amount of resistance (aside from the tiny amount of static friction, to anyone who is picky about physics). Were you able to move the stick at all away from being absolutely 100% dead center? This is really the best measure you can get of controller production quality (not necessarily how good it is on the whole, but how well it is actually made). The larger the central dead-zone, the less precisely it behaves, thus the worse it is. The original XBox was actually by far the best controller ever mass-produced in this regard, but unfortunately they were also too fucking huge... even more unfortunately, the 360 controllers, while having better ergonomic design, are of a cheaper manufacturing quality and have less precise sticks, and they lose their precision after less use (though they are still not as imprecise as PS sticks). PS2 and PS3 controllers both have relatively terrible sticks, but frankly this hasn't mattered quite as badly, since many games made (especially for the PS2) relied on the D-pad (more like D-buttons, a pad implies that they're all part of one object) as the main source of movement, and the Xbox ended up getting the better end of the FPS genre, which is really the only thing that is heavily affected by stick-precision.Speaking of D-pads, Nintendo must have a patent or something on theirs, because it's forcing everyone else to make bad ones. The 360's D-pad is basically just an extremely short stick with an extremely flat and wide head... it's horrible and completely imprecise (which is why no game uses it for anything besides small, quick actions like giving squad commands). Playstation D-pads aren't really pads at all. They're just four separate buttons. This works fine, but it just isn't optimal, as it doesn't allow for quite as much simplicity in rolling one's finger from one direction to another like Nintendo D-pads do. They could probably just stick the buttons closer together, though, and that wouldn't be a problem at all. There's a lot more to be said on controller design (like size and trigger style), but I don't feel like typing that much shit that no one really cares about. And while battery style and changeability are also important, they aren't what I'm talking about.Summary:Ideal controller (designed objectively for both precision and ease-of-use) = Original Xbox sticks + SNES/N64 D-pad + general shape of the 360, but a bit smaller[Edited on October 26, 2009 at 1:59 AM. i just spent all of an extra $15 for a charging station for my ps3 controllers... i use them to turn on and off the system, true, a nifty BT/IR remote fully programmable would be much easier but i'm not to that point yet of needing one...none of the games that are 360 exclusive appeal to me on a console platform (prefer my FPS games and others of that ilk on the PC)all of the types of games that I do like on consoles (racing, fighting, etc) are on the PS3 either exclusively or are cross platform.i actually like the ps1/2/3 controllers, maybe i just take better care of mine or something but i've never had issues with the sticks. (only controller with stick issues was the n64 one (it would wear out pretty quick sometimes, but then again i played the hell out of them))with a blu-ray player and now netflix OD as well as PS3 media server software, along with the combined above I never really had any interest in a 360 at all, except for the #'s of people with them that play some sports leagues (but i don't have the time to play them anyways so it's a wash)
10/27/2009 11:07:31 AM
^those are all the reasons why I like the 360 better, that and I started with a 360 first. So I guess it really depends on which system you bought first. At this point they're almost identical in what they have to offer with the exception of blu-ray.The main reason I picked up a PS3 was for blu-ray back when it was the cheapest blu-ray player...and because SandSanta had one and the only exclusive Playstation game i've ever been interested in was the GT series...although after playing forza 2 I haven't enjoyed it as much.[Edited on October 27, 2009 at 11:18 AM.
