i lol at people who pull into a relatively empty parking deck where maybe theres a car in the closest and 3rd closest spots to the store, but the rest of the row of spots is completely open...and rather than park in say, the 5th spot, they park in the 2nd spot so they don't have to walk the extra 15 feet

It is always safer to back into a parking space.

I, too, do this almost every chance I get.

If I happen to pull forwards into a parking space, I do not necessarily have to walk behind my vehicle when I get back in, therefore, I do not know for sure that there isn't anything behind me.

i know it doesnt make sense, but it seems like most of the time when i get to a place im arriving when there isnt much parking lot traffic. So I spend the extra 2 seconds up front, to avoid the omghassle of backing out (waiting for other drivers) when there is more lot-traffic

There's a guy in my office building who's so paranoid about his Porsche getting hit, dinged, or even pooped on that he parks it at the far end of the lot away from any other cars and puts a cover on it every morning. Jeez dude, it's a car, not a newborn. I often want to park right next to it just to piss him off but I'm too lazy to walk that far.

it's easier for me to back my truck into a spot than to back it out of a spot. when you're backing into a spot, you can see what's coming both ways. when you're backing out of a spot, you can't always see if another car is coming and a lot of idiots won't stop when they see someone slowly backing out of a spot ahead of them. they just think "welp, if he backs into me it'll be his fault so i ain't stopping" and keep right on going. not much you can do when you're parked between SUVs or vans or something.

also, this summer at work the parking lot was empty when i got there so it was really easy to back into a spot and then when i left in the afternoon the lot was full so it was easy to just pull straight out with cars on both sides of me.

i also batman park whenever possible

I almost always back in because:

a. it's easier to see when pulling out, and I know I'm not running over anything
b. leaves room for my driver side and the room for the driver side of the other car beside me (unless the people next to me back in, too)
c. my car looks waaaaay cooler from the front

exceptions to the rule:

- grocery shopping/hauling shit (gotta have access to the hatchback)
- garage (driveway is too steep to back in, and if I do I usually burn the clutch a little)

I back into parking spots at work, and that's usually about it.

And here's why:

I drive a small sports car and most people at work have SUVs, vans, or work trucks. Therefore I can't see anything on either side when I pull out of the spot. My car is also a convertible, with a tiny ass rear window. You could hide a Mac truck in the blindspots my car has. I could back into an 800lb gorilla and never see it. Thus, I back in.

And yeah, when it's 5pm I wanna get the hell out of there

Outside of work I usually park in the back of whatever lot I'm in, or an end spot if possible. My car dents easily and I'll be damned if some asshole is gonna ding me.

I really don't think I've ever done this in my life.

Part of it is that I'm an uber-impatient driver, and just want to screech into my space and get the fuck out of my car.

But also, backing out of a space isn't that hard/dangerous. Just look in either direction, and if there aren't any cars coming, you can back out. I've done it thousands of times in my life without mishap.

also, I feel like backing in would be harder than backing out - because by definition, if you're backing out, you have lots of space, whereas if you're backing in you've got to worry about fitting your car into a small area. and going forward is easier than going backward, so I prefer to do the tricky part while moving forward and the easy part while moving backward.

apparently others find the reverse to be true, particularly with large trucks

the thing is, it's seldom unknown. I can usually look in both directions and see there are no cars coming

and on the occasions when I can't, I usually just back out slowly, so that if anybody's coming, they can honk/avoid me. it seems to work okay.

I'll post later this week, when the jinx kicks in and somebody smashes into my gas tank.

dtownral is right. It's way easier to back into a really tight space. That's one of the reasons most forklifts are rear steer. You swing the rear end instead of the front end. Way easier to get the forks in the right spot without having to back up and go at it again than if it was front wheel steer and the forks were swinging wide.

If you work downtown in one of the parking decks, you come to appreciate backing in. Nowadays, with people all over their phones, it's too easy for someone to not be paying attention when you're backing slowly and hoping you don't get hit. And then you have to anticipate whether they'll even stop for you or if they expect you to stop since you're in the way.
