well if they were ugly we wouldn't be talking about them right now.

I give them a big "meh"
10/4/2009 6:32:21 PM
paerabol, I can respect what you're saying, but it's not as if they don't act pretentious on stage, etc. They most certainly do.
10/4/2009 6:34:49 PM
did the banjo really originate from africai really really hope so

Carolina Jubilee and Mignonette.Their latest series of albums hasn't particularly impressed me. Mignonette is my favorite though--it has an actual sense of uniqueness that I don't think they've expressed on any other album, and every song is distinctly different from the next--I.E., it's structurally sound instead of being a jamble of songs."At The Beach" is a beautiful song that they were too quick to stop playing live.

yeah i've never actually seen them live. i pulled that post out of my ass mainly because I dig the avett brothers, be it guilty pleasure or otherwisei hope they haven't become pretentious though...I have a couple friends that know or have known them, and had nothing but good things to say about them as individuals
10/5/2009 6:53:06 AM
bon iver sucks cock tho
10/5/2009 10:16:21 AM
ive seen em live and it was a bunch of stinky hippies. i still like their music though and their performance was ok. going home smelling like BO was not favorable
10/5/2009 10:29:57 AM
It's hipsters, not hippies at these shows. They're even worse...And it has nothing to do with smell, unless you can smell the self-righteous, arrogant bullshit steaming off of them. And I think the Avett Brothers are getting in a little over their heads. I've already tried to say I like some of their songs, but I don't like the atmosphere the concerts attract, nor people highly overrating them. These are my biggest issues, bottom line. The banjo thing is just an arguable rant that pertains to the entire talent versus song-writing fiasco as mostly argued about with bands like Phish....[Edited on October 5, 2009 at 11:33 AM. hahaits hipsters that like megafaun and bon iveri thought with the dmb tour, it was just frat fags that liekd avett bros now.but it's all just judgement of something youre not a part of. tend to your own onions, mang
10/5/2009 11:44:27 AM
I've been to exactly one show. The venue was pretty awesome, but the crowd was another story. As for the DMB crowd, you're probably going to get that when you tour with them. The new album is also not helping avoid those types of people. And I've listened to the 13 tracks that Bon Iver has out, and I like most of them, but not Megafaun or whatever...Yes, those are more for stupid hipster douches, I will agree there.
10/5/2009 11:54:27 AM
i don't think the Avett Brothers have much of a hipster fan base. it's more of a yuppie and/or alt-country type fan base (these people are hard to describe, but they aren't hippies or hipsters).and i really don't think Megafaun is music for "hipster douches." not even close, really. i'd say Megafaun's fanbase (from what I can tell through people that buy their records) is much closer to the Avetts than anything[Edited on October 5, 2009 at 11:56 AM. 10/5/2009 11:54:48 AM
and i used to enjoy their live shows far more than their albums. they bring a lot more energy to their shows. unfortunately their fans annoyed me to the point of not wanting to see them anymore.and megafaun has hipster fans. but they also have hippie fans. megafaun themselves are more or less music school educated hippies.[Edited on October 5, 2009 at 11:57 AM. Scott Avett just held an art show at a gallery in Salisbury and then gave a talk afterwards about his life, music, art etc. I got to meet him for a couple minutes and he was a genuinely nice guy. His paintings are incredible as well.
12/2/2010 7:21:34 PM
i hate their music
12/2/2010 7:22:44 PM
The Avett Brothers are a pretty polarizing band, at least in this area since they're from NC. I'd say most people around here love them, but those that don't love them kinda go straight to the other extreme and hate them. I think they're just OK. A solid amount of really good songs, but just as many really bad songs. IMO, the most recent albums had plenty more bad songs than good ones. But, I thought Emotionalism was good.Whoever said there wouldn't be this much hooplah if they were from Florida or whatever, though, is way off. The Avett Brothers aren't just big around here, they're big nationwide.

question for Mr Scrumples are you in fact a banjo playing machine? Please post recordings, videos, shows of your musical genius. Just wondering if you have any basis for the negativity towards the musicianship, specifically the banjo, or if you were just blowing off steam for your lack of creativity.on a side note has anyone listened to the brother's dad Jim Avett? I'm not much on his music, a little too country for me, but he's a nice guy my wife and i met him in VA before a show right before we got married. She joking said we wanted the brothers to play our wedding, he took it seriously and gave us his phone number to see if we could make it happen.
12/3/2010 12:02:30 PM
^so what happened?
12/3/2010 12:12:03 PM
nothing we couldn't afford them i'm sure so she called Jim one day and left him a message saying thanks and it was nice to meet him. story ends on a low note sorry about that
12/3/2010 12:14:54 PM
man you didnt even call to find out? hell you pick a nice destination and promote it they might do it just for a video.i mean these are the guys that recorded a song in a gondola going down a mountainside
12/3/2010 12:19:32 PM
^^well it was nice of him to try
12/3/2010 12:21:40 PM
well the wedding was less than a month away and she was really joking about it. our reception venue could not handle it and we didn't want to turn our wedding day into an avett brothers show. although it would have been rad in my opinion. plus we had absolutely no extra money but hey it was a fun story right
12/3/2010 12:23:34 PM
The irony of this discussion, is that they actually did play a friend of mine's wedding reception a few years back. Don't know what it cost them, but it was prior to Emotionalism I think.

Tried watching them on Austin City Limits tonight. What a shitty, shitty band.
1/4/2015 12:32:47 AM
Love themOnly time I've seen them live is a Merlefest a couple years back, they were pretty awesome considering the crowd was extremely limited/subdued by rain.
1/4/2015 12:53:46 AM
^^Well, they are not what most people would consider bluegrass, first and foremost, because they aren't really bluegrass. To be honest with you, I am kinda of happy about that because that genre itself has been fairly, thoroughly and heavily beat to shit, so it is nice to see people explore with new things (although, a good bluegrass track every once in a while would not hurt). Overall, I think that they are extremely talented singers, with the singing and harmony definitely being the core of their music. And you kind of have to give them that credit in today's market. The problem that I have with them is that their songs sometimes just really underwhelm me, as does their instrumentation. They frequently incorporate really old cliches into their melodies that are reminiscent of a pre-teen's broken heart crying out to mama, and it just doesn't inspire me. I feel like in regards to song and lyrics, this band is similar to the Punch Brothers in that the singing and performance component is there, but they are usually at their best when covering classic songs. If you have never watched a youtube clip of each of the Avetts covering songs on the piano solo, then you should check it out because they are exceptional singers and performers. And I must say, them covering songs on the piano is much more inspirational than listening to something of them that is original. The other issue is not really his (Scott's) fault, but he sort of became known as an aspiring banjo player when everything that he was doing on their earlier CDs was fairly standard, mild tempo plucking and strumming that accompanied a stronger and major guitar component. I just feel like they really had the opportunity here to carve out a more serious role for the banjo other than a standard instrument to get the crowd going on a solo break, because the banjo is not that frequently used as the main instrumental support. I actually like what he does, it is not bad or mediocre, but everything just felt rushed and pieced together in a hurry into something marketable given that they are both amazing singers, brothers, and to their fortune incredibly handsome. But, as vinyl states it best, the talent pool is incredibly deep, and when these guys rose to so much fame on vocal performance alone, IMO, it just made me wonder and think about what is really going on in music.I mean, honestly, I think that what Steve Martin did with The Crow and other albums in the same time span as these guys is a much more impressive body of work. But hey, he's old so fuck it.Anyways, these guys have harmonies reminiscent of the classic harmony guys, so give them some credit for that, and I would recommend streaming their youtube covers for some truly inspirational stuff.[Edited on January 4, 2015 at 5:24 AM. Saw them on NYE, for the third year in a row, and this year's show was good. I think I like the new 7-piece sound of the band. The Austin City Limits from this weekend I thought was a bit weird because the order of the songs didn't flow together well, almost like they edited out some stuff for TV and it got a little wonky. I really appreciate how they sound just as good live as they do on a studio track.
