Probably because M50 is close enough to M5 that it'd perk up some heads at BMW.

Quote :
"Trademark lawsuit against BMW M series
Infiniti ads often compare the M35 and M45 to their direct competitors in the BMW 5 Series midsize class, notably the 530i/535i and 545i/550i. The flagship of the 5 Series is the M5.[9]

BMW introduced its first M series vehicle, M6, in Canada in 1987, and as of 2008 its current lineup consists of the M3, M5, M6, M Coupe and M Roadster. Infiniti registered M45 in 2004 and M35 in 2005 as trademarks for sedans in the middle of its range, and in some advertising has used the letter M alone.

In 2007, Canadian Federal Court Justice W. Andrew MacKay ruled that the use of the letter by Infiniti was in a form similar to that of the BMW's trademark M alone, and its use of M6 as a package for modifying one of its vehicles, cause confusion in Canada between the sources of the wares of the defendant and the wares of the plaintiffs. The court granted an injunction that prevents Nissan from directing public attention to its products in any way likely to cause confusion."

Anybody getting confused between the Infiniti G35 M6 package (6-sp manual) and the BMW M6 has no business buying cars anyway.
