A lot of people are either missing the point, or not clearly understanding what it means to be an atheist.

To be an atheist do not have to say "there is absolutely no god, never has been, never will be." It is impossible to prove a negative, and most atheists acknowledge that.

What they will say is "there is no evidence that I have seen that convinces me that I need to believe there is a god, so I will live my life as if there isn't until someone can prove to me that there is"

Nah.... those are all non-theists.
And atheist is type of theist. It is non-secular and faith-based. We believe that there are no gods.
Because so many, including you, swear up and down that atheism is 100% secular and not faith-based, the term atheist will likely continue to mean that.... but real atheism is different. We consider the vast majority of self-proclaimed "atheists" to be, as I said, "non-theists". We could choose a different name, seeing as how society will probably have the term "atheism" always meaning the secular variety, but they're the ones who are using the term incorrectly, so they should call themselves non-theists, not atheist. Or.... we faith-based non-secular atheists could call ourselves zerotheists, but that's unlikely to catch on either.....

Uh, no. Do you understand what secular means? how about non-secular?...faith-based?
Are you fucking retarded? There is absolutely nothing that doesn't make sense there. (except the typo in the first sentence: "An atheist is a type of theist."

legatic: What you described is secular. They are simply people that say, "there is no evidence that I have seen that convinces me that I need to believe there is a god, so I will live my life as if there isn't until someone can prove to me that there is." That is ENTIRELY different from what I described as non-secular. I and other non-secular atheists (and I contend that we should have the term "atheist",) would say, "there is no evidence that I have seen that convinces me that I need to believe there is a god or that there isn't a god, but I will live my life believing with every iota of my being that there isn't, regardless of evidence either way. It is my faith."

This is very clear and easy to understand. What the fuck is your problem understanding that?

that church is a cult, I've been to a service or 2 with my ex's family and they were all way way way too into it, kids jumping up and down in their spots and running around and shit...

I was baptized Episcopalian and my idea of church is reverence and sore knees when you leave, not that garbage.

I loved the Grace for State small groups. It was a great way to unwind with friends, pokey stix and a movie or something. The weekly service, however, was not my favorite. It was passionate, but some of the theology did not quite sit. Ended up at vintage21 at the 6PM service. That way I could sleep in .

a band i used to be in played a gig at vintage21. they had a really nice setup for shows. we had to tone down some of our lyrics (we weren't asked to, but it didn't seem appropriate to sing "god damn" inside a church even if most of the attendants had no affiliation with the church).

I have a close friend who attends and helps at Vintage21. I've been. It's pretty par for the course as far as evangelical Christianity geared towards young people goes. Not really my cup of tea but it's not scary.

I have a Grace Church story but I'm at work and It'll take me a while to type it. It involves a guy with creepy eyes showing up at my dorm freshman year every night for 2 weeks straight and making what seemed like vague sexual advances towards me and another suitemate.

I am now a member of the Church of England

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark Satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

we drink beer and have gay members, it's pretty chill

I remember going with some friends of mine who talked me into coming one Sunday, it was a little too intense for me. Some of the folks were nice, but it was very odd to have people that clingy towards you after meeting them for a first time. It was definitely NOT for me!

A girl from my highschool joined Grace, she was a straight-A student until second semester when she failed out and tried to kill herself. Grace made her fear God so much, it literally drove her crazy. She had to go to a mental institution for a few months, and she moved to the west coast, literally to be as far away from them as she could possibly get.

This is serious shit.

Pretty much, though most atheists are agnostics also. Christians hate agnostics a little less than atheists because they aren't specifically denying the claim of God's existence, they're just saying that it couldn't possibly be known. I don't see the practical difference between the two.
