fedex i was on my balcony at the time they came by and didn't hear the knock. they couldn't leave it at the office apparently so unless the re-attempt request works today (very doubtful) i'll have to drive 20-25 minutes to the other side of raleigh to pick it up or wait until monday.this is the same delivery company that at my last apartment they took a brand new in-box $90 chair and threw it out of the back of the truck onto concrete (witnessed).

^^at least yours was shipped, I pre-ordered last week and my order status page is now saying it was just shipped yesterday and will arrive next Tuesday
8/28/2009 4:29:49 PM
Gave me back 13 GB of space instead of the advertised 7 GB. That's worth $29 by itself for me.
8/28/2009 4:37:51 PM
^did you upgrade or did you start from a fresh install?
8/28/2009 4:50:48 PM
upgrade
8/28/2009 5:04:34 PM
sweet...i was wondering how the upgrade process would work as far as cleaning up disk space.

uhhh, system files you don't need, printer drivers you don't use, and PowerPC components of most Applications. Just got through with my install. It took 52 minutes on my 2008 MacBook Pro (2.2GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB 667) Here my before/after stats

Everyone keep in mind Apple moved to Base 10 for calculating drive space.....
8/28/2009 10:14:19 PM
did a complete re-install (the "upgrade" disc is the same as a full, if you weren't aware). haven't noticed too much yet, but probably worth the 30 bucks.
8/28/2009 10:53:49 PM
yea, well be sure to pay attention to Expose, the Dock and Stacks if you want to see differences
8/28/2009 10:55:03 PM
i do like the things they've done with the dock. rarely use expose to its full potential. been used to using virtual desktops since forever, so i generally stick with spaces for organization.
8/28/2009 11:02:06 PM
managed to brick my superdrive on my macbook pro. i've gotten remote disc stuff set up on my pc box and on the mac; the remote disc shows up in finder and i can start the SL install... but a few minutes after starting it says my disc needs repair (i've repaired it already manually) and says to restart with the remote disc (following instructions blah blah)... every time i try to restart and select a boot disk, the remote disc never shows up... anyone with any ideas? i'd really appreciate it
8/28/2009 11:11:58 PM
i ain't messing with this junk til like 2 months from now
8/28/2009 11:16:14 PM
thats what she said
8/29/2009 11:49:21 AM
omgomgomg sl up in here.
8/29/2009 3:06:13 PM
I like the new dock features, particularly the click hold. Works a lot better on a laptop.
8/29/2009 5:56:48 PM

OS X shuts down so fast. The power is usually off by the time I stand up from the chair and lean down to flip the switch on the power strip. Compare this to my relatively new Dell Laptop at work that probably takes somewhere close to 2 minutes to power off.
8/29/2009 6:43:19 PM
^^ i generally use the hot-corners to activate expose and Spaces (upper right - all windows, lower right - desktop, upper left - Spaces, lower left - Application windows). I always do that when using an external mouse, and even with the touchpad, given how big it is, it's still easy to get to the corners with a quick swipe. But w/r/t the 4-finger swiping..... I thought I read that all MB and MBPs that supported multi-touch were going to get the 3 and 4-finger features. My 2008 MPB has multi-touch (I use 2-finger gestures all the time), but after the upgrade I don't get any additional options in the Trackpad preferences....
8/29/2009 7:55:07 PM
^ doesn't exist on mine. Options before were the function keys or the hot corners
8/30/2009 9:31:02 AM
i have the 4 finger stuff on my early '08. of course i installed the kext to do so about 3 months ago so i knew it would work.i use the thumb button on my bluetooth mouse to trigger expose. works awesome.
8/30/2009 9:56:48 AM
I've never had a problem with the four-finger swipe, but it's always nice to have options.

so what's the best way to backup your data to prepare for a total format and install of snow leopard?in past years ive just backed up my home folder and stuff to an external drive. But now with Leopard i have been using time machine and was wondering if it's easy to restore my data using that? im not interested in restoring the OS files (obviously) but mp3s, pictures, etc would be great.
8/31/2009 2:34:18 PM
^very easy to do if you have time machine setup. You can select what files to restore from AFTER you install the OS. The other option is to restore from a time machine back up but then that would include your OS files as well.Use migration assistant after you get snow leopard installed
8/31/2009 3:22:49 PM
^ yep^^ assuming your time machine backup is a seperate drive, just wipe your main drive (NOT your time machine drive), install Snow Leopard. When Snow Leopard comes up for the first time, it asks if you want to migrate from another computer, or a time machine backup, just choose the time machine backup, and voila... an hour or so later (depending on how many apps/files you have) and your computer is exactly how you left it.

Does anyone else think Quicktime X is complete trash?
8/31/2009 4:24:37 PM
8/31/2009 4:41:27 PM
hmm it took me a while to figure out how to get it to do a clean format. wasn't as obvious as in the earlier OSX installershas anyone gotten Saft to work for Safari yet? I've run the installer, but it doesn't want to load
8/31/2009 7:19:40 PM
^ http://mac.zicos.com/news.php/n/8675909/Make-SAFT-work-with-newer-versions-of-Safari
8/31/2009 7:30:39 PM
that's what I used to do before they added in an auto-updater option in the software. this time safari isn't even recognizing saft (ie, its never trying to load the plugin)
8/31/2009 7:34:56 PM
8/31/2009 8:20:01 PM
i tried playing a .mov file to see the new quicktime, and instead it automatically downloaded and installed quicktime 7 and played it through that. wtfalso the ambient light sensor is a little more sensitive. the brightness of my backlight changes depending on whether i'm on the dark default wallpaper or in a browser window with a white background
8/31/2009 9:09:35 PM
8/31/2009 11:02:45 PM
here's some more in depth background on QuickTime X, FYI, in the middle of a retardedly long Snow Leopard review http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2009/08/mac-os-x-10-6.ars/6
9/1/2009 12:38:29 AM
Found out why Saft won't load in SL. Safari is 64-bit and Saft is 32-bit. Unless Saft is recompiled in 64-bit then I would have to run Safari in 32-bit compatibility mode

Is snow leopard like windows in that it doesn't matter what disc you use to install it as long as you use your product key? Does upgrading to snow leopard from leopard even require entering a product key? Long story short, I pre-ordered under the $9.99 up to date program and due to post office screw ups its going to be another two weeks at least before my disc gets here so I'm curious if I can just use someone else's disc.
9/1/2009 11:43:35 PM
there are no product keys or CD keys. The installation doesn't phone-home. All Snow Leopard discs are the same (upgrade, retail, OEM, whatever). You can get the $10 upgrade disc and install it on as many Macs as you want, doing upgrades or clean installs
9/1/2009 11:56:57 PM
^the only OSes that have a product key are the server editions of OS X, and it searches around your network to see if it can find a duplicate key anywhere
9/2/2009 3:22:57 AM
Finally got around to updating both my macs tonight. Seems a bit peppier, but that could just be the fresh install of anything. The Macbook hadn't been formatted since Leopard was released, and for some reason I wasn't able to upgrade to the latest 10.5.6 (? I think) for the last few months. It's nice to be up to date again. As a sidenote (kinda) I was surprised that my bluetooth keyboard stayed synced with my Mac Mini throughout the HDD format and OS install. I guess it stores that pairing somewhere in the hardware of the Mini itself rather than on the HDD somewhere.
