No. You should have picked up the money when you saw it on the table. Your going to have to take the loss on this.

my suggestion allows the problem to be resolved and they can get through the rest of their lease without feeling like they have to lock up their silverwaredo you guys have keyed locks on your doors? if not, go that route and don't leave anything you can't stand to lose out in the open when you're not around.
6/20/2009 10:21:24 AM
Its his fault for leaving money out at his own house? thats fucking ridiculous.I'd kick her ass out if she stole a dollar from me.
6/20/2009 12:50:53 PM
i think people are blaming the roommate for leaving the money out because she admitted to knowing the roommate in question has a history of theft. in that case, she should have known better but you shouldn't feel like you have to have everything under lock and key in your own home.
6/20/2009 1:16:27 PM
no. its like this."ok, roommate, i know you have a shady past, but i'm willing ot give you the benefit of the doubt and help you out. You can stay here." Said or not, this implies that you're going to trust them and that they will not steal from you. part of giving them the benefit of the doubt is dealing with them like any other person. not locking everything in safes around them. If you feel the need to do that, then they shouldnt be in your house period.so when that person breaks that trust, by stealing ANYTHING. it is over. clear and simple. Infact i'd probably punch em in the face and then kick em out.
6/20/2009 1:58:33 PM
sounds like all three are on the leaseand you cant exactly go down to the leasing office and demand they kick out one of the tenants because you think they stole $50
6/20/2009 2:21:25 PM
^ like hell you can't
6/20/2009 2:33:58 PM
you can't.MAYBE if she was charged with it..but not just for some bullshit like that. if that was the case it'd be the easiest way out of a lease ever.. just have your roommate go lie to the office and say you stole some shit and bam, you're out
6/20/2009 3:36:26 PM
RAWR RAWR RAWRMY ROOMMATE ATE MY SALSAI DEMAND SHE GET EVICTED TODAY!!seriously, as already stated, $50 is nominal and i dont even think the cops would give a shit, much less the leasing office
6/20/2009 3:52:18 PM
Consider the potential liability issues from the point of view of the manegment company. If they ignore complaints and something more serious happens then they're looking at serious lawsuits.
6/20/2009 4:44:24 PM
As no one has said this, you sure roomie 1 didnt pick it back up and is just blaming roomie 2?
6/20/2009 4:46:12 PM
Who pays bills in cash? I have always written out all stuff, no matter how small, by check, so I have a record of what I paid, and there is no excuse on whether it was lost, did I remember to pay it, etc. I also refuse to let my roommates pay in cash for this same reason, no "well I left it on the fridge, didn't you see it?" bullshit. I've had too many roommates for that to work still.

^, ^^The argument in court would go something like this:Initial complaints about roommate X were ignored by the leasing agent. So, when roommate X did heinous deed Y, it occurred only because the leasing agent allowed roommate X to remain on the premises. That was negligence. Thus, the leasing agent should be held liable for $Rhode Island actual damages and subject to $Texas in punitive damages.
6/20/2009 10:20:51 PM
ok, good luck getting the leasing agent to take a missing $50 seriously if its that big of a deal, she should file a police report. but be prepared for the officer who shows up to stifle laugher while he takes the report. i doubt they even take reports for values under something like $200
6/20/2009 11:24:35 PM
so, OP, wtf have you done about the situation??? we need updates
6/21/2009 9:36:09 AM
OK..no leasing company as I own the house. She has still not said anything and has avoided me. I guess I am pissed that she would steal from me (I have let her pay late if her money was tight and charged no late fees, have lent her $ for gas and food). I dont like being "kicked in the face" is what it boils down to. I am telling her tonight that I have decided to sell or rent the house out by December (ample notice) and we will all part ways.Oh and other roommate is saying he will call her probation officer today if he can find the # and tell her about this. I have told him to not do that.[Edited on June 22, 2009 at 9:50 AM. Reason : eh]

^^are these your friends or random people?this girl has a probation office, is she a gangbanger?
6/22/2009 11:24:57 AM
6/22/2009 11:33:37 AM
I have asked him not to call the probation officer. I do not need any more friggin drama. He feels her probation officer should know. And she has a probation officer due to a past embezelment charge.
6/22/2009 11:58:07 AM
one time when i was 12 or so i stole $5 from my sister. only time i ever stole money.my dad had to ask and beat me for many minutes before i confessed.i suggest you do the same.
6/22/2009 2:59:21 PM
6/22/2009 3:23:52 PM
Well, she gets paid today and it should be interesting to see if the $50 shows up
6/24/2009 9:22:27 AM
That's pretty shitty that one of your roommates is being dishonest or swiping money. If you're going to live with someone, you really really have to trust them. Even if it's only $50 now, it could easily be $300 next time.If I were you, I'd keep an ear out for new roommates. When I found one, I'd go with my gut feeling and kick out the one you trust least. If problems still continue, kick out the other one.But then again, I've always either been blessed to have honest roommates, or too naive to notice anything that would give me a reason to distrust them.
6/24/2009 10:38:23 AM
I still don't understand why you saw $50 that you knew was meant for you just laying on the table and didn't pick it up.
6/24/2009 1:07:10 PM
Yeah, that made no sense to me either.
6/24/2009 1:31:56 PM
This entire problem could have been prevented with a little wisdom on your part. Besides that, if you cannot trust your roomates, kick them out and live by yourself.
6/24/2009 2:09:13 PM
Man, fuck sharing a cell phone plan b/c someone else has bad credit. That's what PRE-PAID PLANS are for.DUH
6/24/2009 2:46:08 PM
soooo, have you still not said a word about this to your roommate(s)? or did i miss it??if not, SPEAK UP for allah's sake
6/24/2009 2:51:13 PM
she got paid and handed me the bill money she owed...no extra $50 in there. I am typing up a 30 day eviction notice in the AM
6/24/2009 4:25:52 PM
i didn't read the entire thread but if she claims she put the $50 on the table and u did see it before but now it's gone....i'm sorry but you will have to just eat it since u have no proof or witnessif she's paid rent on time it would be a shame to lose that over $50
6/24/2009 4:33:33 PM
^^ haha if she maintains innocence why would she give you $50?And have fun with that eviction... better put all your shit under lock and key, write down serial numbers, do a complete inventory of everything you and your other roommate own and guard it 24/7 for the next 30 days. Not to mention the fucking awkwardness.Definitely worth $50 IMHO.Oh, and good luck collecting rent Since she doesn't have to pay it now.[Edited on June 24, 2009 at 5:08 PM. Reason : .]
6/24/2009 5:07:19 PM
whatever, people are always dicks when you kick them out of your house. it'll eventually happen so just get it over with already. tell the other roommate he needs to get his own phone, because he could be trying to frame her.
