We have to work on the 3rd, but our company was nice and gave us an extra day off to take later on in the year
6/18/2009 6:38:08 AM
Take the 6th off then
6/18/2009 7:45:10 AM
Our company is open also for the same reason. 1/2 of us were given Friday off and the other 1/2 Monday. If you didn't like the day you could switch with someone. It was to ensure that at least most groups were represented both says.

What is really sad is your sense of entitlement here. The 4th of July, from what I hear, is about celebrating America's independance. I am trying to think if there is anyone else out there who may be doing something similar..... perhaps not gaining independance, but perhaps fighting to protect America's vested interests. As it turns out we have tens of thousands of troops overseas who don't get the 4th off. Or the 3rd. Or any other day in July. Or 2009. So quit whining and get the fuck over yourself.

While I'm not necessarily defending the sense of entitlement, you have to realize that paid holidays off is an agreement that you come to with your employer when you accept the job. A person has a right to feel disgruntled when an employer takes away any benefits (and let's face it, a paid day off is worth ~1/260th of your yearly salary)I was kinda ticked when the company I worked for guaranteed me a raise for good performance last year but when this year's performance review came around denied it because "you're doing an excellent job and it's obvious you put a lot of care and effort into your work, but we're not giving anyone raises". I know, be happy I have a job, but still, even in a shitty economy, you're going to save more money by having happy and productive workers. Too often are employee benefits written off as the bottom line.

who cares...just ask off the 6th and you still get a three day wknd. Why quit b/c of 1 day.

put up a fight. the 4th is the only good, real holiday of the year.

I ran into this with my job. They can do whatever they want with your vacation policy - it's not protected by law. they don't have to offer vaca at all. The only thing you have is contract law, and by contract he can't just up and decide to change it - he has to notify everyone in writing with "sufficient notice" - such as when he issues next year's manual. No, he can't change it two weeks ahead.

Then again I doubt you were slammed with work to do on the 3rd. If you have clients I bet they may have been closed. I guess it all depends on the type of work you do though.
