Well JCTarHole would have a beef with the fact that someone stated there are 13 Jr's and 8 Sr's, well that's 21 guys, and I see at least two Soph's. I don't know about you guys, but it's difficult to have more than 22 collective starters (11/11) unless you like yellow flags. Kickers/Punters usually don't enter into the discussion of starters. Bottom line is that UNC is going 7-5 this season and Davis will have a lot to answer for. For UNC to even think about 10-2 which they all think is happening, they are going to have to go 4-0 OOC, which will not happen, and FSU should give them what they have coming on Thursday night in front of America. Good news, after that FSU game, Va tech in Blacksburg says: WELCOME!

That depth chart is inaccurate and outdated.

Jolly, Dyer, Wilson, and Thomas are the only locks as starters. Elzy was the starting FB until he fractured his scapula last season so it's possible he regains his starting spot and I expect Charles Brown to take over for Hemby now that he's healthy. Christian Wilson is the starting H-back and Jonathan Cooper will start since Stahl is no longer with the team. So you'll see anywhere from 4-6 senior starters. If you guys are gonna rip on the Heels, at least get your facts straight.

I do agree with the premise of BigEgo's post though. UNC is now a fairly seasoned squad with a lot of upperclassmen, mostly juniors, as starters. The only inexperienced position group is the receivers.

haha - I called an acquaintance of mine a wal-mart fan and he started going off on how all state fans work at home depot and how all duke fans are CPA's or some shit. i laughed in his face that he didn't know what a wal-mart fan is (he's a stoner who went to western carolina)...and I also refused to tell him what a wal-mart fan is

he's also one of the fucks who claims the Helms championship as legit. I throw it back that Navy was "given" a helms championship in basketball, but even Navy doesn't claim that shit (when the best banner Navy has is an elite 8 from robinson's days)

What being committed to living a lie looks like

the helms NC for UNC was re: basketball...not football...it was more of an extension of the wal-mart fan story

another good point regarding helms is the fact they gave national championships in basketball even after the NCAA tourney started...I think there were at least 4 cases in which helms gave it to a team that did not win the tourney...including one just a couple years before UNC won its first tourney championship

Two of their 4 Stahs recruits need a year of prep (Dixon and Farms)

Wooten (who looked like a pretty good kicker) is transferring.

And it has begun!!!

I'm just using that line since everyone uses it for our injury reports, might as well hope UNCCH loses most of their recruiting class to grades, character issues, etc.

Jerrell Rhodes out of Durham reportedly qualified, but will be shipped off to Hargrave.....Butch trimming the fat to meet the 85....I'd like a resident of Walmart nation to explain this.

Apparently they are now at 82 scholarships. So the Rhodes being qualified and still going to Hargrave thing is a mystery.

Oh Brother.

These excerpts were especially laughable:

Quote :
" Yet when he showed up on campus, Austin braced himself. Yes, Davis had been nice during recruiting, but there was no more selling to be done. “I thought, ‘They got me now. Let’s see how they act,’” Austin says.

Turns out everything was fine. Blake remained a paragon of virtue, not to mention one of the nation’s top D-line coaches. And Davis did not metamorphose into a maniac. “He stayed the same,” Austin says. “I respect him, because he’s a very, very good coach and is educated about the game and scenarios of life.”"

Quote :
"there is reason to believe UNC can climb to national prominence (in football) and stay there. That would be quite a feat, since there are no other schools around the country that can boast of a basketball-football duality. Say what you want about Florida and Ohio State, but while those schools enjoyed a burst of prosperity earlier this decade, neither has sustained a presence at the top of the basketball food chain."

Florida winning 2 B-ball championships in the past 5 years may not support an argument for their sustained stay a top of college basketball, but at least at present it would seem to support that they have achieved a "basketball-football duality" as this author describes it. They won 3 consecutive titles in the two sports (2 B-ball and 1 F-ball) for Christ's sake. Not to mention they still have Billy Donovan and they had already been to the national championship game under him prior to winning their last 2.

This was the best though:

Quote :
"“I’ll tell you the truth,” Austin says. “This is a football school. Our fans are great, and they pack the stadium every week. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”"

"It’s no coincidence that North Carolina, Kentucky and Indiana don’t have football powerhouses. They may rise up every now and then to reach some bowl games and enjoy modest prosperity. Perennial contention is — and has been — out of the question."

but for some reason they think UNC can break the mold...

Quote :
"Thanks to some extraneous factors, Carolina has a bigger pool in which to trawl for those prospects. The state population is expanding rapidly — up 12.6 percent from 2000 through 2007, nearly five percentage points faster than the national rate — and therefore provides more potential prospects. And, thanks to the presence of the Carolina Panthers, who joined the NFL in 1995, there is a pro football beachhead in the state. Don’t underestimate that. Since many of the newcomers to the state are not traditional “Tobacco Road” types, they are more likely to gravitate toward football than ACC hoops"

sounds like this is good news for UNC...and State and Wake and Duke and ECU and App!

Quote :
"It would be unwise to expect Carolina to ascend to that status this year. The Tar Heels are thin at receiver and might struggle in the kicking game. But the trademark defensive speed found at top programs is beginning to accumulate in Chapel Hill, and the skill positions are being bolstered on offense. With a favorable schedule that includes a pair of FCS teams and games against Miami and FSU at home, there is no reason to doubt that the Heels can make a run at 10 wins."

so much contradiction...i guess the idea is if you give every possible scenario, you can't be wrong

The Tarheels return the best defensive line in the country. Their defensive tackles are ready for the Sunday league now. If quarterback T.J. Yates can stay healthy, look out! The schedule is feisty.. at Georgia Tech on September 26th, at Virginia Tech on October 29th and at NC State on November 28th all will pose a challenge. But don’t discount Butch Davis’ gang. These guys are skilled and under the radar nationally.

Yeah, a lot of the sites/bloggers/whoever that I see claiming that Carolina is on the way to becoming a powerhouse are the same sort that seem to assume it's the only major school in the state because it's the only one whose name they hear regularly.

UNC's DL was Fresh and Soph's last year, they are now Soph's and Jr's, there will be a huge difference. In fact, if UNC's line is not the best or second best DL in the ACC, they'll be lucky to win 5 games. They have zero experience at WR, no proven RB's, and a QB that wouldn't be considered reliable by anyone, and their backup QB is awful. So I'd expect their DL to shoulder the load, much like our DL did in 05, where we won 5 games. mario was not the number one overall pick after his freshman campaign, MCCargo and Manny weren't first rounders after their soph years either. I'd focus on UNC's WR and DB situation before their DL.

"Beast of the Hill is Back

The semifinals and championship games of this year’s tournament will now be open to fans and will be held at Kenan Stadium.
The “Beast of the Hill” is a one-day, non-contact camp designed for team passing game development and competition. Participating teams will compete against teams within the Tar Heel State, as well as from throughout the region.

“I would love to think that at North Carolina we have the best seven-on-seven camp on the entire East Coast,” Butch Davis said. “We’re starting to find out what really fits the high school coaches.”

In the inaugural event last summer, 18 schools from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. competed. The winner’s trophies went to Washington (D.C.) Ballou and Monroe (N.C.) Sun Valley.

Last year’s runners-up Richmond (Va.) Hermitage, along with Brandywine (Md.) Gwynn Park, Carrboro (N.C.), Chapel Hill (N.C.) East, McLeansville (N.C.) Northeast Guilford, Raleigh (N.C.) Leesville Road, and Raleigh (N.C.) Sanderson are among the teams already pre-registered for the 2009 tournament.

Fans are encouraged to come out to Kenan Stadium on July 24 to watch the final three games of the tournament. Admission is free - stay tuned for game times.

We’d like to start getting fans in the stands to watch these high school kids", Davis said"
