Upper management aside? A lot of the bartenders I know have turned down management because it's an increase in responsibility and a decrease in pay. Heck, servers have turned it down also because it's about the same money they make now but with more hours.

Very true....and if you've seen Waiting we all know what happens when you become a manager.
