7/28/2009 2:25:17 PM
congrats! we used that kind of pacifier
7/28/2009 4:23:52 PM
They gave it to us at the hospital actually...We recently switched to another one (I think by Avent?) The rubber on the rim appeared to be rubbing the skin on her chin raw, and since changing to a slightly different shaped one, it's been good. But it's still a similar shape, rather than the big thumb-shaped ones that you see all over the place. (Supposedly it interferes with the shaping of the upper front teeth less. I have yet to check claim out though.)
7/28/2009 5:08:00 PM
ah, we hated the soothies.mostly because it was the only one our daughter would take for a long time, and there was no way to clip it onto her. We cut her off of the pacifiers at about 17 months, but sometimes I wish i could stuff one in her mouth when she's cranky.

I'm pretty sure I see either a ferret or some sort of snake in that photo.
7/31/2009 5:35:39 PM
My son never used a pacifier. That's one battle we didn't have to fight.
7/31/2009 5:38:26 PM
What's the purpose of a pacifier anyway? My aunt is adamant about her kids never getting near one so I thought they were now considered a bad thing?
8/8/2009 12:43:21 PM
I don't think they're inherently bad. But as they get older, if they're still using a pacifier they tend to not want to babble or talk, so it can delay speech development, but nothing that's going to ruin your kid's life. That and it's one more thing to have to remember to take with you and have extras of. On the other side of the argument, when they're really young, they need something to suck on as a soothing mechanism. If they don't have something like a pacifier, they'll suck their thumb, or fingers. It's a lot easier to get a kid off of a pacifier than get them out of the habit of thumb sucking.
8/8/2009 1:10:13 PM
Yeah, a pacifier can be a good thing. The sucking action is soothing to newborns and there is thought that the use of one reduces SIDS. The only down side to an infant using a pacifier is that it can affect the mother's milk supply because the pacifier is used for soothing instead of the breast. However, if your kid is attached to a pacifier at an older age, Lord help you! Getting some kids of a passy is like getting a crack addict to kick the habit. As they get older, it interferes with not only speech development, but can cause orthodontic issues. And man, if you lose their passy and don't have another one -- meltdown. Total baby meltdown. Our son refused pacifiers. Fortunately, he never had any interest in sucking his fingers either.

i was a thumb sucker and my mom had to put this gross stuff on my finger to make me not want it. but it worked

Wellll...I've avoided posting it for a while, but here it is, anyway. My wife and I are expecting our first in January. We found out Tuesday that we're having a boy. We're stoked. But she's had to be admitted to the hospital three times so far due to hyperemesis. Not cool, dude. Not cool.On the flip side, if we have the kid before Dec. 31, it won't cost anything.
9/3/2009 11:07:48 AM
I've also got a boy on the way on 1/26/10. Our first. 1/26 is also the date of the UNC/NC State basketball game. I'm hoping our boy stays in the womb during the game and comes out later. I don't want him to have to witness that.
9/13/2009 5:51:06 PM
