it was a battle flag, for one small group of confederate soldiers flown in very few battles. that's its origin

"Why would they be idiots? The confederate flag was not used as a sign of pro slavery and was not originated as a symbol of white pride. The flag is associated primarily with "southern" culture. This means different things to different people and to many is as simple as the imagery of sweet tea on a porch in the summer, saying hello and being friendly with neighbors and a plethora of things that people associate with southern charm.

Sure you could suggest that some racists use the stars and bars in racist ways, but people use all sorts of icons to represent ideals that are not intrinsic to the icon itself. e.g. the cross or the american flag.

The stars and bars wasn't even the initial flag of the confederacy. In fact, the flag for the state of north carolina is modeled directly after the original flag of the unified south. Does flying this flag make one ignorant or a racist as well? If no then why not since it was a prominent flag of southern separation.

The flag is no more than a country flag flown during a war whose causes ranged from slavery to economic freedom and there is no purpose to attribute the intent and ideology of the flag with one cause more than the other."

I see your point... but how do you explain the extremely high correlation between stupidity and waving/wearing the confederate flag? Don't bullshit me, you know that correlation is there.

I see lots of correlations among many issues, but if I were to state them you'd come up with BS arguments and excuses for them.

oh yeh, here's this for ya.

. the civil war was not a battle based solely on racism and the desire to imprison humans and use them as property only.

i would never wave the confederate flag or display one outside of my house, but that is mostly due to the types of people who wave that flag. however, i would never assume that all people who display the flag are racists because that would be guilt by association and such a rash judgement is not appropriate.

if the civil war was based on racism, then wouldn't the north and south be on the same side? i don't believe the yankees treated blacks any better than southerners after the war....

people are allowed to have the own reasons and beliefs. if they want to fly the flag, they can.... just like people get stupid tattoos and say they represent something... I don't know why they fly the flag. But I know why I like the flag... and it has nothing to do with race...

I respect the Confederate flag and consider it to be a symbol of the South. Obviously it is a symbol of racism and hatred for many ignorant individuals of any race. The war wasn't merely about slavery, though, as pretty much every history teacher I've ever had has stressed. It was primarily about States' rights, the small and decentralized government of the Confederacy vs the large federal government of the Union. I don't really favor a large federal government and I think a number of problems in our society are a direct result of that concentration of power. So I think on one hand, it's actually unfortunate that the South lost. Blacks may have had less freedom for a while, but everyone else would have certainly enjoyed greater freedom. Slavery is not historically a sustainable institution and would not have persisted in any case, particularly with bordering free nations on all sides. Slavery was merely an economic footnote of the conflict, which may have particular interest for blacks, but I think it's pretty ignorant for either a white or black person to refuse to look beyond the racial issue.

The same way you can explain the correlation between stupidity and practically anything... 50% of the population has an IQ of less than 100, give or take.

For the record, I agree and never said this. I just said they fall in one of a few categories, and the vast majority of them are just very stupid people.

If I am behind someone at any story and that person is wearing a confederate flag, in my experience, 70-80% of the time I hear something socially inappropriate or just stupid come out of their mouths.

Some people like to gloss over the ugly aspects of the old south and pretend that the entire way of life wasn't based on a profitable agrarian economy fueled by the exploitation of cheap slave labor.

^Mr. Joshua

there is actually a large school of thought that suggests the south set itself back by having slave labor. slaves only work enough to make it through the day and provide the means to sustain themselves for another day. actual wage workers will continue to produce as a means to earn more potential for the purchase of other goods. given the vast workforce the utilization of slavery was highly inefficient in product and as a result the profits and the economy were stifled.

The major diff was the fact that they didn't need slavery because of their need to embrace the industrial revolution - their soil sucked.

the point is that you all are criticizing the south for slavery and treating blacks horribly, when both the north and south did the same thing. sure, most of the north gave up slavery first, as they began to realize that their niche was in a different type of work, while the south, dependent soley on agriculture, tried to hang onto its work force. in either case, both had slaves before the war and both treated blacks like shit before and after the war. thus you can't criminalize the south for things that the northerners did as well.

the correlation is that people who are likely to display the stars and bars are likely to be southerners. being southern white, rural and low socioeconomic status has a strong correlation with racism. these two groups are likely to intersect at some point.

I would draw a vin diagram if i wasn't playing that stupid flash doom game.

^exactly. its like any other tactic. "bringing democracy to iraq" for example. the trick is you demonize the enemy which removes their credibility and provokes a rapid emotional response which in turn generates unquestionable support.

Where the fuck did i do that? Dude, learn to fucking read. My first post in this thread was about my liking the flag's use on private property and persons. It says a lot about a person if they would go out in public with a confederate flag waving on them. So I don't mind it.

I didn't say anything about slavery or treating blacks horribly, that is just what you wanted me to say.

I've heard that. Forced labor isn't the most efficient thing in the world. Instead of being motivated your workers may be just as inspired to work less and steal as much as they can. Regardless, the white landowners were staying fed and always had the blacks to look down on.

I've also been fascinated with the psychological underpinnings of such a society. White femininity was defended at every turn while black women were systematically raped and brutalized. The dichotomy can bring up some surprising conclusions.

A NASCAR race is on private property. Just because the public is allowed on it, doesn't mean it's not private property.
