It's only some people that see Porsche as the maker of hardcore 911s, but in reality, they've always had some plush car, or one that's not in keeping with that image. There's been sportomatic (automatic...) 911Es, 914-4s, and you could argue the 928 wasn't a sports car either. Not to mention Porsche still makes more money as a design firm rather than a "sports car manufacturer". I think Porsche's generally made outstanding cars, though they're not for everyone. Even today's line up includes the very well selling 997 twin turbo cab, tiptronic, hardly a sports car by my definition. That said, I've been reading a lot about the Panamera, and the weight saving measures they went to is rather astonishing, the amount of aluminum/magnesium, etc. used, and even triangular cut outs in the support members, strategic omission of certain parts (like metal fender liners, to leave only the plastic between the fender well and engine bay, beyond the bracing/chassis reinforcements) is pretty unusual, and awesome in my opinion. I very much look forward to driving one.
7/13/2009 12:55:42 PM
^just about every example you are citing is still a 2 door coupe, not some humpbacked 4 door abomination. All those examples were also used in GT racing to some degree.
7/13/2009 1:18:44 PM
I assure you this vehicle will be used in racing as well, and form has always followed function at Porsche, not many people thought the 911 was particularly good looking before it earned it's keep either...And this car is not a 911, it is a very good sedan; here's a couple of things I find interesting (from autoblog);Optional ceramic discs, 6 piston monoblock calipers on 16.1 inch! rotors. 567 lb-ft, mated to a true double dry clutch gear boxMagnesium door frames, radiator mounts, etc. aluminum suspension and sub frames, hood/fenders/doors/rear lid...Keep in mind we're talking about the world's fastest production car around the Nurburgring, and with this as a quote in it's review;"...the dashboard illuminates with the "Launch Control" alert. Release the brake quickly and the Panamera Turbo digs all four sticky Michelins into the pavement as it rips to 60 mph in a hallucinatory four seconds. The automaker claims the car will hit 160 km/h (100 mph) in 9.0 seconds flat". Take that in for a second. This, sir is a serious machine.[Edited on July 13, 2009 at 1:51 PM. I love Porsche through and through, but that thing's ugly. I have no doubt its fast and fun to drive, but so what I can't go 150 in I-40 every day to work, lol. And I think Cadillac will reply at the 'Ring. Afterall they set their initial record time with the slushbox version. It's U-G-L-Y*will holdout final judgement till I see one in person
7/14/2009 9:58:13 AM
looks like stretched 911.
7/14/2009 11:07:14 AM
They put another set of doors on a 911. Visually, thats all Porsche did. Which is a good thing IMO.I'd be more disappointed with Porsche if they hadn't already sold-out by producing an SUV called pepper.

I can't wait for overweight, underperforming FWD Porsche hatchbacks
7/30/2009 5:59:02 PM
You might have to wait even longer for that than you'll have to wait for my SR20 swapped 240sx son.

If you put $20k down on a base 911 you would still be paying ~$1200 a month for 4 years
8/5/2009 4:05:17 PM
Yeah my salesman offered me 1.9% APR on certified Pre-owned Cayman S's.VERY NICE /Borat.Still a boatload of money that I don't have right now.

R U Cerea-us?
8/5/2009 9:09:00 PM
I am quite cereal actually.
8/5/2009 10:51:19 PM
impressive.but I think its pretty telling when the 4S and Turbo versions are not available with a manual transmission Hell, even the Cayenne GTS has a manual 6sp!
8/6/2009 8:13:11 AM
I think they've gotten to the point where the PDK is better than a standard manual in the sense that it can shift faster than you and the fact that 0-60 times are faster with the PDK than with a manual. True this may take away from the "driving experience," however, I think we are going to start seeing more paddleshifting (electronic shifting) automatics versus the traditional manual gearbox with clutch assembly. This does sadden me.

I've heard (can't find a source atm) that the 4 cylinder turbo model project to slot under the Boxster is now dead. Though I saw that there were still plans to build a turbo 4 and put it in the Boxster....

8/20/2009 8:40:02 PM
That wing is such rice...
8/20/2009 9:13:59 PM
That wing is fully functional and creates a massive amount of downforce. That, is what rice wants to be.Not the other way around.
8/20/2009 9:38:31 PM
I kid, I kid

was talking with dubcaps about this last night. if it's from the factory, and it's fully functional...then go for it!the sad thing is that someone will buy the $130,000+ RS and then do things like swap out the wing and buy AM exhaust. but they'll post pics on 6speedonline!!!!!!
