Sounds like you don't have a specific idea of what she needs to be doing instead of solitaire. Secretary work can be very ambiguous.

If there are specific tasks that were given to her that are not being finished, then that's a big problem. If she has idle time after everything's done, then suggest something that needs doing.

On another note, you do NOT want your secretary's computer, or any computer for that matter, to be visible to visitors. Its just as unprofessional as her game-playing. Even a business that needs to show things to visitors on computer monitors will typically have a separate, dedicated monitor facing away from the desk.

she's a huge bitch, obviously

but that's no reason to take it out on the secretary

or any other woman, for that matter

If you do fire her, somebody should send her a link to this thread...seems like a potential wrongful termination case

^ haha, I was thinking the same thing.

In my opinion, if the woman is getting all assigned work done, then her playing solitaire shouldn't be any grounds for firing. It sounds more like an issue of the boss not giving her enough to do since you didn't mention anything about her not doing her work (except failing at the projector thing, but I've seen plenty of smart people have trouble with projectors).

I mean, would you prefer she PRETEND to work in all the extra time she has and be miserable, or that she play solitaire in the extra time? Either give her more work to do, or let her play solitaire.

I'm sure you can't fire her now that you made this thread. This has evidence for discrimination written all over it. GG. Oh and also try making a decision without having to first consult TWW.

if she hasn't been told directly (in person), tell her so. sounds like you're not setting the bar - a secretary doesn't just make up work on their own, if you haven't given them tasking, you shouldn't be complaining about them playing solitaire. and as was said a few posts ago, if her computer is visible to the public, that's something you should remedy.

Good call on the discrimination front. Were she to ever find this thread there'd be a big lawsuit if she was ever fired or treated poorly-which has a very loose definition.

Since there are no previous documented warnings, firing her could lead to a lawsuit, so your best bet is a stern warning. And do mean impersonations of her reaction behind her back.

yea. if you see a black range rover parked to a red mercedes convertible, slash all 8 tires and key the fuck out of both cars.

on the secretary, she knows that playing games is not allowed per the computer usage policy she signed and agreed to when she took the job. secondly, she has plenty of work to do, enough to keep her busy. thirdly, she doesn't just fail at technology and ordering lunches, she has lots of shortcomings that place a huge hindrance on the streamlined operations of our division. failure to call clients, failure to schedule appointments, failure to maintain a neat and orderly workspace, failure to perform simple tasks such as creating portfolio binders on time, etc.

was she cheating on you long? why? i thought she cleaned your eye ball and stuff. this is making me lose hope in relationships everywhere!

maybe instead of the computer stuff, you should give her a warning about her other problems. does she get an evaluation of any sort?

sounds like you guys need to start warning her and documenting it so you can set the stage to fire her in the future

you can't just bitch about her and fire her without that though

do you have any kind of discipline policy? like in a handbook or something?

because if you do, you should probably follow that very carefully/document it. and perhaps have her sign a statement saying she was warned.

i mean if i were you, i'd do that

Re: ex - that sucks. You deserve much better than that.

Re: secretary - does she have any sort of work plan that details all the things she is supposed to be doing? If not, get one right away. Doesn't have to be fancy, just elaborate on your last bit by explaining your expectations in excruciating detail. I.e. clients should be called within x days (hours) of receiving notification via e-mail and said call documented in a log that is reviewed at least weekly in a meeting. If necessary, have twice daily meetings regarding what you expect her to accomplish. Get HR involved.

She will either leave, or shape up. If you're lucky, she'll take the initiative on her own. And you might want to have someone delete this thread.

^^^well so is NC and it seems to matter here. especially if you have any kind of disciplinary code/handbook/anything like that. if it isn't followed and there is an ESC hearing, could be trouble for the employer.

at least in NC

at least from what i've "heard"

everyone in my company gets an annual performance review. it shows people where they did good, and where they need improvement, and directly affects our bonus and raise. the secretary received a "needs improvement" review for the exact reasons i have stated and more. she knows she needs to get her shit together.

yea. her dad even called me and apologized for her actions. he said that he was actually looking forward to having a son-in-law he actually liked. he doesn't care for his other daughter's husband, a french sonofabitch.

this secretary also was transferred to us from another division who pretty much wanted to get rid of her. i dont think i have the ability to see her past performance reviews, but i'll talk to HR.

maybe we can transfer her somewhere else.

If she can't competently turn on the projector or take lunch orders right... then fire her ass and hire someone who can. I mean, if she can't get the two main thing her job description asks for, then just hire something who is pretty and good looking... at least you have something to look at when she is on her hands and knees trying to figure out how to turn the projector on while you eat your soy based hamburger.

You can fire a secretary for how she dresses or even how she looks weight wise. The company has a right to set that standard now or in the future.

He didn't say anything derogatory on her age, sex, religion, race, etc. He was just describing her - and the deragatory comments came from her weight and clothing choice.

He is in no wrong doing - and anyone that would try to screw with that situation is an ass.

i think it would be interesting to see how many games she plays in a week.

(you know...monday, before she comes in, look at the statistic and see how many games shes played...which will include any games she had to stop abruptly...then look after she leaves on friday)

I was going to say that you should give her a really stern warning and then fire her ass the next time it happens, but having read the whole thread it seems to me that she's well past the point of needing to be told to shape up. I think you also said that she knows there are things that need to get done, so not having enough to do isn't an excuse.

If you haven't already, start compiling a record of every time you or someone else catches her doing things that she shouldn't be doing. You could probably fire her right now, but you may as well cover your own butt. When you've finally had enough, cite all of the reasons that you wrote down and then kick her out. If she tries to counter with a lawsuit, that record will be all you need.

And sorry about your ex, man. Just don't lose hope; not every woman is a two-timing slut.

i think its relatively simple and if i were in charge I would do it as such.

Tell her that she has failed at the following duties, and then list them for her. These should include the projector, the food and whatever else comes to mind. Remind her that these tasks are essential and unless your company can be sure she is putting forth every effort to get these tasks done and do them correctly then you'll have no choice but to let her go. The economy is rough and its inefficient for you not to get the full return on your investment.

This will play out one of two ways. Either A) she'll shape up and get her work done in an appropriate manner or B) you'll catch her playing solitaire again and can say she clearly isn't trying and knows that is against policy and is henceforth fired.

basically...give her the rope, and let her decide if she is either going to pull herself out of the hole she is in or if she is going to hang herself with it.

true true

sorry kids, fat is not a protected class. you can be discriminated based on it. is it right? no.

honestly, someone who can't order lunch right is not taking their job seriously. in this economy, there are people 100x more hardworking that would love to take her place. just because she's done with her work doesn't mean she can't do other shit, like learn more about their business, ask employees if they need help with reports and stuff. i mean, if its slow and the secretary is asking for more to do, you can show someone how to run menial reports pretty easily. and she's salaried?? yeah i'd be making sure she had a shit ton to do.

see if you can get her old performance reviews from HR, give her a verbal and written warning, make sure she signs it. in fact, go talk to HR and get their help. documentation is everything and the dept can make sure you do it right so if/when you fire her, all the ducks are in a row and you're not dealing with more paperwork later on

What's strange to me is that the OP described all of this, rather than her ineptness at her actual job as grounds for firing.
