i never understood how arcade machines didn't really evolve to keep arcades alive. why didn't they switch to lighter/cheaper cabinet materials , use displays other than heavy ass power sucking crts(maybe a projector system), maybe switching to buildin them in china? i know consoles and online play have taken away a lot of the demand for arcades but there's nothin like poppin that quarter up to say the unspoken " i got next bitches"

Arcade cabinets (especially 80's games) are dirt cheap.

http://www.auctiongamesales.com/AUCTIONDATES.htm

That one comes to Winston-Salem every other month (next one in September). Most of the old school stand up cabinets sell for 50-125 dollars. That's working, complete games.

The bigger cabs, shooters, riding games etc range from 300 to ~1500 but varies wildly by age and desirability of the game.

I used to go quite a bit, games like Bad Dudes, Street Fighter 2, Golden Axe, etc routinely sold for 50 bucks or less.

Or you could restore/mod your own like I did http://www.snotmonkey.com/articles/pac-man-arcade-cabinet-restoration/

---------

Just don't get ripped off by the shit on ebay, and don't buy the garbage "MAME" cabinets.

holy shit

what i would pay for an NHL Open Ice 2-on-2 machine

is potentially much more than what i would actually have to pay

Video games killed pinball when they came out because they were much cheaper to maintain.

Home video games killed arcades because they were cheap entertainment.
Why haul your kids to an arcade when they would be just as happy spending all day in the family
room playing nintendo or (insert game here)

I miss a nice dark and loud arcade

the auction in WS a couple of weeks ago was pretty terrible. Lots of MAME cabs that were going for WAY too much money. The rest of the cabs were fairly so-so. There were a couple of nice classics there though that I would have enjoyed including an incredibly clean Crystal Castles cabinet that was gorgeous even though the monitor had a little burn-in. Overall a fairly weak line-up.

Space Invaders was cool, too.

And even Frogger was fun.

The basement of Talley student center has some arcade machines.

Most of them suck, unless you like Tekken TAG, Blitz NFL '[year number], and deer hunter. And some other shooting-based game but I think it may have broken.

It used to have one of those "shoot the terrorists" sort of games, too... one where all the terrorists look like out-of-work porn stars inserted into a video game world. I think it was called Target Terror Gold.
