The Z06 driver is probably too scared of his car to really get on the throttle.

kills sections on major car forums were active 6 or 7 years ago but now are pretty much dead. You don't have the same sense of anonymity on the internet anymore.

"^^^ is your e36 M3 turbo charged?"

I wouldn't dare touch that beautiful power plant that so many engineers w/a degree in awesome put together, lovingly by hand (intake manifold/pipes, larger throttle body, exhaust and tune don't count). If the /// was any cooler, it'd snow in Raleigh every day.

so, ahhh, it's been a few months, but I'm not quite ready to sell the Z06 yet. In fact, I'm enjoying the hell out of it. I'm enjoying it so much that I think I might want a dedicated track car instead...so I might be interested in selling the Z06 around late spring or summer before I move.

You can't judge a car by it's owners. That girl in the M3 was probably a double agent acting as a
tard. Corvette owners are fat/balding/middle aged with small wee wees. Duke, at least it sounds
like you enjoyed your Corvette? I really didn't like driving them on track.

I didn't like M3s before I started doing track events, but when I was doing 110+ through the upper
S' at VIR, exiting hog pen at 7000rpm, power sliding through turn 1 while passing a Corvette on the
outside...

Yeah, I found my Z06 to be a better sports car on track than I find it to be on the street. It feels like it comes alive and is in its element, as opposed to feeling like a fat sled with a huge motor.

Will my balls shrivel up and fall off if I were to sell my Z06 and buy an Audi TT coupe (1st gen, Quattro)?

What if I were to buy a racecar/track rat to go along with it?

Yeah, it'll feel that way until you start pushing the car... There's nothing unmanly about having a dedicated track car, just don't go too soft on the street car.

Do not fucking buy a TT.

If you want a dedicated car buy an e36 strip it and super charge it. Laugh as you pass GT3s.

You hardly need a supercharger on an m3 to make it lap fast. There's several e36s that do sub 2mins @VIR full, normally aspirated. I've seen a stripped one do it w/zero internal work, and natural aspiration. At that point it won't be a street car though...

Oh yeah, if I get rid of the Z06, my intention would be to get a dedicated track car, which could range anywhere from some sort of full-blown racecar, to something that would still be street legal, but that you wouldn't really want to drive on the street with any real regularity. If I got something like a TT Quattro, that would strictly be a DD. Obviously I wouldn't sell my Z06 to get one of those for track duty!

True statement; I'm a German car fan, too.

However, that's like ragging on Chuck Liddell for not having perfect table manners.

^^ well, a big reason would be to have something a little ratty and significantly cheaper that I wouldnt feel bad about if I hurt it on the track. Plus, I'd rather start with a base c5, as I'd be ditching all the suspension parts , Ti exhaust, and improved-over-base model stuff lime seats and stereo that make a z06 better. Only good z06 item I'd keep would be the LS6, and it's easy enough to get that power from an LS1 if I wanted to.

Yeah probably. You rail on FWD cars on here day in and day out, yet you'd consider getting an AWD car that behaves like FWD most of the time and has a very large front weight bias?

Youthink it'd be that bad?

My Evo was 60/40 and awd, and it handled like a mad dog. (obviously a TT wouldn't drive like an Evo).

It's widely known that the first generation TT is not a sports car. More like a tarted up version of the platform used for the Jetta, Golf, etc. The 2nd gen is pretty much accepted as a sports car. I'm no expert but most people get the 1st gen for its looks, not its performance.

^^^ Oh yeah, I know it's not a sports car. I wouldn't be looking for a sports car if I had a dedicated track car. If not a TT, I'd probably get an e46, audi or volvo wagon, saab 9-3x, etc.

...or maybe even another Wrangler.

I liked a lot of things about my Corvette, but it just didn't feel like driving a car so much as a contraption designed/built by a handful of people, to a budget and full of compromises. I picture the C5 as the car DANGT40 would end up building if he had the resources.

Wasn't this your first track event(?). Hold your horses until you do a few more.

RE: Budget track cars.
BMW is the only game in town for a low buck car that's not painfully slow. E46 M3 is a fantastic compromise as a dual purpose car and the e36 M3 with suspension modifications is unbeatable for lap time vs. $.

biased for sure, but i just think it is the right decision...

duke...
daily: high mileage e46 m3, e60 545i/550i, CPO higher mileage 335i, e39 540i/m5.
track: like bigT said...'92 or so e36 325i. $1500 buys good engine and shot suspension e36. put $1500 in suspension/tires and you can have a great $3k rack car.

corvette and e46 m3 are very expensive cars to track. they take and eat big tires... $Australia. m3 is also heavy and it will probably eat through rotors/pads. oil change diy is $100. it's just too much.

Yeah, no shit! I replaced the tires on my Z06 about 3.5 weeks ago (along with an alignment). After 2-3 thousand miles (to include 2 track days, although one of them was mostly on a wet track), they're already getting close to the wear bars. Probably enough to drive for another few weeks, and to go either VIR or CMP for a day next month and drive it home, but after that I'm sure they'll be worn out.

The Nitto NT05s I put on the 'Vette weren't TOO expensive ($755, plus another $80 to mount and balance), but that's still a shitload of money when you're doing it every other month. Also, I don't have THAT much money in the 'Vette, and my insurance would cover me if I totally destroyed it, but I'd rather not damage a nice car like that with any off-track excursions.

as far as a DD, I don't want an ///M-anything, most especially a high-mileage one. It's not that I don't love them--it's that I won't need a dual-purpose car if I have a track mule. I would consider a 335i because I absolutely love them (and my dad has a nice one for sale that I could get for a good deal), but that's really more than I want to spend when I ride my BMW motorcycle half the time even in the winter, and more than that in the summer. Probably the next hottest thing I'd get as a DD would be an e46 330i, or a TT Quattro...and I might very well end up with something more pedestrian than either of those.

However, I might very well end up with something hotter and more hardcore than a 325i on TMS springs as a track car! I'm very open to getting a full-tilt racecar. I don't want anything open wheel (too many places don't allow it), and I want something with 2-seats. Other than that, I'm cool with full cage, lexan, everything gutted, etc. Production based, tube-framed, I don't care either way. I'd go for some sort of SCCA-class racer (like an Improved Touring car), or a kit-built track-day machine, or whatever.

^^ Turbo Miata would also be fast, fun, and cheap. However, the one I had was a little bit of a handful on the street. I can see it potentially being kinda scary on track, with all that power and an 80-something inch wheelbase, and a chassis not really designed to handle it (mine had a 4-point bar, and strut tower bars, but no other bracing...don't know how much additional chassis bracing would help).

there's a local car (or locally built anyway, i think the owner is based in va) that's going to be hunting for that record as well very soon.

yeah, well if they're going for a record obviously times aren't going to be any real secret. i believe it's also going to compete in x275. i don't really know much in terms of setup besides big single/lsx/glide/other typical race car junk. i've respected that the owner/shop probably don't want to give away any secrets until they go for the record or at least get the car dialed in, so i haven't been too nosy other than a couple of quick walk arounds to admire the work. they may have some ace in the hole, or it may simply be a well planned combo of proven parts in a well executed build, i dunno. i do know it made some passes this past weekend, but i haven't heard any times.

all it takes is money. It's not diffucult to achieve power to weight ratios required to do anything. Those are really fast times regardless. Cool to see onboard. Rarely do car vids feel fast.

money is certainly a primary factor, but in situations like this its not like the sky is the limit with your power/weight ratio. you're still limited by a stock chassis and a stock based engine. there;s also stock style suspension, which in this case is the real headache of it all (irs). i don't know what tire the car in the video is on, but the local car is on a 275 which makes it even more impressive.
