my fave was the ackward silence while camping with those guys. Bruno said something and nobody moved a muscle for like 45 seconds. Thought it was priceless.

So I saw it tonight and thought it was insanely funny. Downright pornographic at times. A friend of mine that now lives in Texarkana, Arkansas was at one of the two MMA shows used in the film, and said that the people there actually got mad when "Straight Dave" started spouting anti-gay stuff, and that's why they were really mad. He said that they did some editing to make it look like the crowd was getting angry at him for the gay stuff that went on, but in reality they were mad b/c of what he was saying. He didn't know what the people at the other show did though.SBC seems to have something against the Southern United States and its inhabitants though. I mean I love laughing at stupid rednecks, but most Southerners are not like that, and trashing on the South seems like a common thing in his movies.
7/13/2009 11:14:24 PM
Nah, it's just that most foreigners think that America is like the south.
7/13/2009 11:19:15 PM
I mean hes english, I'm pretty sure they think of our entire country as backwards hicks, especially our actual rednecks.
7/13/2009 11:21:19 PM
^^^the first time they filmed in Texarkana (i think) and that footage was never usedit sounds like the crowd was bad to begin with and they had to escapebut i don't think your friend would have any reason to liein that case that article and the movie is faking it if he was at the last film sitebut looking at some of those people in the crowd i would have trouble believing they would be tolerant of homos[Edited on July 14, 2009 at 11:37 AM. I was a huge fan of the tv shows, and really enjoyed Borat etc. but was a little let down by this movie. It was certainly downright hilarious in certain parts, but other times I found myself not really getting into it. I dono if I played out Baron Cohen's style by watching da ali g show too much in college or what. If you are a fan of his previous work, you will certainly enjoy the film though, no doubt about that. I guess I expected to just find it funnier than I did.

thats the response that ive heard from most ali g fans. "i'm here with mah main man, Buzz Lightyear...""do you think we'd eva put a man on the moon" .... "what about the sun?"
7/14/2009 12:32:24 PM
haha heck yea. those interviews still get me LOL'n
7/14/2009 12:46:36 PM
"What would you say to those people who say that the moon doesn't exist?"

there was a section about 30 minutes long in the middle of the movie that was really goodit started around the time he was on that talk show with Gayby OJ and ended after both gay converters and the karate schene...but borat definitely had more of the "did he really just say that" kind of humor....stuff like "what kind of dog is this. Is it a cat in a hat?"...."No, its a tortoise, in a shell."

Did anyone enjoy this movie who thought Borat was stupid?

just saw it, and though mostly funny, overall wasn't really great. The biggest difference between Bruno and Borat is that with Borat, a nice, innocent, likable, but naive and bigoted man (presumably because of his "background"), he was able to get people to open up to Borat in very personal ways. By expressing his own backwards thinking, Borat was able to find other backwards thinking people who readily jumped on board and expressed all their own prejudices, and therefore the joke was on those people. With Bruno, though, he is not attempting to empathize with his 'marks', but instead trying to directly draw their ire onto himself. And for the most part, people, even the same bigots and racists who gladly expressed their opinions in Borat to a sympathetic ear, attempt to hold their tongue when being confronted directly with people or circumstances that make them uncomfortable (i.e. Bruno and his actions). Most of the bits where he was acting intentionally flamboyant, while funny, didn't actually draw his victims in like Borat did. Consider:- The 3 Alabama hunters - I was actually very, very underwhelmed by this scene. I was expecting something major, but for the most part, the 3 guys acted pretty much like any group of slightly (or maybe severely, in their case) homophobic people would. Bruno kept egging them on and on and on, but they didn't take the bait. They knew they would rather just stay quiet than attempt to argue with him. He tried to enter one of their tents at night, and the guy kicked him out, understandably. It literally took Bruno to try to enter his tent naked and with condoms before he had an actual reaction, and in this case, I think his reaction was totally justified - I mean, nobody, homophobic or not, wants a naked horny guy trying to get into your tent at 3AM. - The Ron Paul thing - again, nothing too surprising. Ron Paul attempted to act like the consummate gentleman, ignoring Brunos advances and innuendo for several minutes, and Bruno and to take his pants off and block the door before Ron Paul finally got fed up. Again, so what? That's exactly what any normal person would do. It's unfortunate that Ron Paul yelled something like "He's queerer than [something something]", but ehh, what else would you expect from a 73 year old Texan who was just assaulted by a half naked man. - The bondage in the hotel thing - Bruno and Lutz were chained together and trashed the room trying to make it look like crazy sex went on all night. They were trying to draw some explosive reactions from the hotel workers, and again it didn't work. The hotel staff acted totally professionally, without getting mad, without slandering Bruno/Lutz, and simply told them to leave like any decent hotel manager would do. - The wrestling match - well, with so much editing, it's hard to know what's going on. And whoever threw a chair into the ring could rightfully be charged with assault, I'd say again the reaction of the crowd wasn't that far out of the ordinary, especially for what they thought they were coming to see. - The swingers party - don't know what to think about that one.... again, seemed like a pretty normal reaction when he tried to touch other guys and make them look at him while they were screwing women. And the thing with the Amazon woman whipping him? Seemed staged to me, and not sure what the point was....The funniest parts didn't really have anything to do with him acting like a big queen. The most outrageous moments, I thought, was what he got the baby-actor's parents to agree for their babies to do, as long as they got on film. And most of the business with the black baby. And of course the stuff with the two "gay conversion" preachers was good, because again, kind of like Borat, he got those guys to express their own feelings, which showed them to be either gay themselves, or just incredibly chauvinistic (at least the older one).

paying mexicans to be chairspriceless
7/19/2009 3:07:16 PM
yeah, that was funny, but it was also apparent that those were some of the many actors in the movie
7/19/2009 3:48:36 PM
^yeah but the joke wasnt on the mexican chair people so it really doesn't matter that they were actors. it was hilarious that he got someone to come in and sit on a person.
7/19/2009 5:55:13 PM
very true. The joke there was obviously to get Paula Abdul to come sit on people, while proclaiming to support and talk about humanitarian organizations
7/19/2009 7:31:02 PM
the parts that were actually real and spontaneous were awesome, better than Borat, but the bad part was that the majority of it was obviously setup/planned which defeats the whole point of the movie.Like the guy at the hotel coming to check on the room and just happened to have a camera man behind him coming down the hallway and didnt notice and didnt even seen to acknowledge the camera man in the hotel room until the very end. Same thing with riding OJ out on the scooter and almost getting hit... yeah, not planned at all
7/19/2009 8:01:12 PM
i don't think they are trying to fool anyone. cohen's a smart guy and i think he realizes that most of the audience is smart enough to realize that the movie's composed of some parts that were clearly planned, some parts that were spontaneous, and then a few parts that would leave the audience wondering whether they were staged or not.btw awesome movie. not as good as borat, but it's still much funnier than all the other comedies that come out these days.

I think some of you need to see Borat again.

the point of this movie wasn't just to get people pissed at him. you're right that in borat it was much more about exposing how backwards other people are and that bruno is much more about bruno. but i think it was meant to be that way.clearly, in bruno, he was going for more shock factor. and it was more ab sacha baron cohen, seeing how outrageous he can be, seeing how far he'll go, etc. in some ways, it was like a really gay, more sexual jackass. but i think that was definitely his intention, whether movie goers prefer that or not. personally, i don't. and that's why borat was funnier. but regardless, when i realize what bruno was going for, i love it for what it is.
